My characters have almost done everything in the Cairn, however, they are terrified of stepping foot in the ball pit. So far they have tied a rope in a loop around the beam and then around their waist so if they fall they'll be hanging above the pit. If no one enters the pit I can't see how they encounter the grick which means Alister never appears which means they never advance
Help please.

Why not just have the grick attack them as they try to cross the beam? Maybe it sees the PC creeping across and thinks "Ooh! Fresh meat!" before leaping out and attacking.
I thought about that, but the grick is 10ft below the beam and from what I can tell has no way to actually reach them or know they are there.

It's been a few years since I ran Whispering Cairn, but I think it would work to just have him show up when they reached the sealed door. No need for them to defeat the grick - if they can avoid the pit, good for them. They still will find themselves at an unpassable door, and in need of help. I think he'd be just as impressed with their abilities if they avoid the fight as if they win it. So let them get over the pit, try to figure out how to progress past there, and once they seem stumped, Alastor reveals himself to offer a solution.

I guess that would work ... they would still have to enter the pit at that point to retrieve his bones. Thanks
