Question about when can a card be played

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

In the beginning we were very lax on the timing on when card could be played. Cure and Leryn were played during combat just to be played. After coming on the forum I think we now restrict too much the timing on actions.

1) Spells like Glibness and sagacity. Can they be played during an encounter if the same player want to use an attack spell? Can the card be played before the assemble dice pool?

2) Can Arushalae's cohort be played in response to an encounter or must it be played before an explore?

Usually not. The general rule is that each player may only play one card per type each check. If it's just a monster with a Check to Defeat, you can't play both the Glibness and the Attack spell for that check.

However, some monsters have checks you have to make before you act. For example, "Before you act, succeed at an Arcane or Divine x check or you may not play spells with the Attack Trait". (This is a nod to spell-resistant monsters in the RPG). In this case, if Glibness/Sagacity would apply to your Arcane or Divine check, you can play it for the Before You Act check, then use your attack spell for the Check to Defeat (which will likely benefit from Glibness/Sagacity).

1) Yes if the check is using the relevant stat. Remember that each player can only play one card of each type though, so if you play Glibness as Seoni you can't also play an Attack spell for that check. Someone else would need to play the buff spell on you for it to work out.

All cards need to be played during the step they are relevant in. For Sagacity and Glibness that would be the "Play cards and use powers that affect the check" step.

2) It can be played during an encounter as long as the chosen stat is being used for the check.

The exact scope on what can and cannot be played in an encounter is still being worked out, but in the meantime a good rule of thumb (albeit more restrictive than rules currently allow) is that if the card/power doesn't impact the check somehow, it isn't allowed on the bus.

Thanks alot

This is interesting I am glad I found it. So even though glibness doesn't affect the encounter directly it does affect the stat used in the encounter so it is legal. However something like Brilliance could not be played because it is impacting a stat not used in the check (specific to Seoni example.

If you are using a Charisma-based skill on a check, Glibness does directly relate to/impact it since it ups it by 3. Now if you weren't using such a skill and just wanted to play it so you can use Radillo's spell cycling power, then no that would not be allowed.
