Does the extra damage from armor spikes trigger automatically when the grapple begins? or you have to make a grapple check or something?

Looks like it's automatic, in the sense that it happens when you begin the grapple with a successful grapple check and on every successful grapple check thereafter.

any other opinion?

Liberty's Edge

Along that line, if your animal companion has armor spikes and it has grab, would this spike damage come out upon successfully grappling/grabbing?

Liberty's Edge

Oh Ya - I believe the armor spike damage only occurs when the grapple is initially successful. But, if you get it again when you successfully maintain, that would be cool - but I do not think thats the case.

Shadow Lodge

when you first hug someone, it deals 1d6+strength+ magic etc..

then every round after you get to choose if you want to deal damage with the spikes OR a different weapons BUT not both.

I have a pleasant surprise for you!

Once you are grappling an opponent, a successful check allows you to continue grappling the foe, and also allows you to perform one of the following actions (as part of the standard action spent to maintain the grapple).

Damage: You can inflict damage to your target equal to your unarmed strike, a natural attack, or an attack made with armor spikes or a light or one-handed weapon. This damage can be either lethal or nonlethal.

Add Greater Grapple to that, and you get armor spikes + an attack. Add Rapid Grappler to that, and...sweet Achaekek, if I'm reading it right, you can maintain as a move action (+armor spikes), make another grapple check for damage (armor spikes), and then punch them in their big stupid grappled face.
