My point really was that nothing has changed. it's not the end of the world. we will come back in 15 years time and there will be charop boards and people complaining about 'power gamers', or games that aren't immersive enough for them and doesn't anybody build 'characters with character anymore or whatever. Guess what we will have 15 years after that...if we are still around :)

There are as many ways to play this game as there are players, none of them are wrong.

Ah, I get your point now. And I totally agree.

And speaking of 15 years from now, I'm gonna have to try and investigate this "optimizer-style": One of the far most statistically prevalent and consistent themes of my entire lifetime so far has actually been playing rpgs on a fairly to very regular basis. So I guess the available data strongly indicates that I'll continue playing regularly both 15 and 30 years from now. Provided I'm still alive, of course. Oh my... I've actually never thought of it like that before, and it just hit me how very true that is... I really am such a nerd!

So applying that reasoning to rpg players in general, you are probably even more correct saying they'll stay the same! :P

I will give you another perception. I have never seen an avowed optimiser tell the 'roll'players they are doing it wrong until after they ask for advice ("no, you don't want to use that class it is so weak, this class is better"). I see 'roll' players complaining about other peoples playstyle all the time - make of that observation what you will.

Though I truthfully haven't seen that much of either, I'd say my experiences are pretty much the same as yours... Damn those arrogant actor types! ;-)

I'd rather people eve stop using the term "rollplayer" at all. It's one of the dumbest made up words I've ever seen, and it makes anybody who uses it look dumb as a result.

In my experience, the players that make the best characters are often the best roleplayers. They are invested in the game, have a clear picture of their character and circumstances....and have actually read the books.

Well hullo there my dear fellow alien, seems like you come from the same planet as I do! :D

I knew I couldn't be alone here!

Who do you think is posting here?
RPG players who enjoy spending time on Internet forums. Please note that this is a subset of all RPG players, not a subset of all humans. So it is not representative of RPG players, only of RPG players that enjoy spending time on Internet forums. I don't know how to make it any clearer.

I haved GMed hundreds of players in my time in Pathfinder Society, it is my experience that the overwhelming majority of them spend no more time on the Paizo boards then what is necessary to manage their PFS characters and subscriptions. They tend to avoid the messageboards like the plague.

I suppose this is an opportunity to expand my skills as a game master. I do realize that I have unlimited license to make the game as easy or as challenging as needed. After my initial post and reading the responses, I guess I am overthinking it. I can't really make any decisions if we haven't played any of the campaign yet.

Basically, what I wanted advice on from the community, is do the types of gamers that make these characters do so because they want to be able to breeze through the content, or because they want the challenge of seeing what they can survive? I guess it could be both, or something else entirely. Either way, thanks to the folks that actually contributed something meaningful to the thread.

here's the great equalizer that will make it so you never have to worry about a thing: random encounters. Roll for it every hour in wilderness especially.

I actually find the expression itself really funny because it's so hilariously self-contradictory in a meta/subcultural contextual kinda way, as if intended to be witty but only succeeding in being fantastically corny and inherently stupid. Typically during breaks in my group the term can be heard a lot along with "powergamer" and similar, mostly to bash on whomever did not act in accordance to whatever silly trope the rest of the group have gleefully pinned to that player's PC. Which often has the bullied player responding by pointing out "all the horrendous mechanical flaws" of the other players' characters, shouting "Totally UN-optimized! LSM!" or something similar...

Yeah, we're really acting our age (most of us are well above 40) and are very proud of our mature and serious gaming culture...

Anyhow, I agree with you. It's also one of those expressions that somehow manages to be derogatory to the person(s) being labeled with it as well as the one doing the labeling.

It's just one more term in a long line of derogatory terms invented to undercut the credibility of those who the person using the term finds threatening. When people feel threatened, they usually default to insults. It's kind of depressing how frequently it comes up in areas like this, where you'd expect the forums would be populated by people who know better.

Gaming is the same as its always been: some people make very specialized characters, some people make balanced, versatile jack of all trades characters, and some people make completely useless characters and b--ch at everyone else for not doing the same thing.

All these derogatory names like "rollplayer" and "optimizer" originated from that third category of players.

Of course, that's balanced by some of the players of the other two categories b--ching at the players of the useless characters as well lol.

I take 'powergamer' or 'optimizer' as compliments.

:D

Yes, I am better at making powerful characters than some people, no, I don't feel bad about it.

I just dialed up the awesome, you have a right to be jealous.

*flex flex* Being awesome isn't a bad thing.

Not sure if you've continued with the campaign yet, or not, but this guy has some good advice on adopting a new gaming group.

(I don't know how to do outside links.)
