Ring of Far Strike threatens 30 feet?

Rules Questions

Does a Ring of Far Strike threaten all enemies within 30 feet by RAW?

Here is the rules for threatening:

Spoiler:
Threatened Squares: You threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack, even when it is not your turn. Generally, that means everything in all squares adjacent to your space (including diagonally). An enemy that takes certain actions while in a threatened square provokes an attack of opportunity from you. If you're unarmed, you don't normally threaten any squares and thus can't make attacks of opportunity.

Here is the ring:

Spoiler:
Ring of Far Strike
Source Ranged Tactics Toolbox pg. 29
Aura moderate transmutation CL 8th
Slot ring; Price 6,000 gp; Weight —
Description
This unassuming black ring changes color to a silver pearlescent sheen when held near a fire. Once per day as a standard action, the wearer can make a melee weapon attack or unarmed strike attack against any opponent within 30 feet. The wearer must be otherwise capable of performing the attack to use this ability.
Construction
Requirements Forge Ring, mage hand, spectral hand; Cost 3,000 gp

Since the user can attack within 30 feat, does he threaten that area as well? If so, that a cheap way to give allies flanking bonuses. Especially if combined with the feat Gang Up.

He cannot take AoO or threaten because you can only take standard actions on your turn. You might be able to ready an action to attack though.

Once per day while then the ring is active, yes.

The rest of the time, no.

Show the rule for this. While I agree you can't AoO because you don't have reach, being capable of AoO is not a pre-requisite to threaten. The rules only require you to be capable of making a melee attack into the square, not to actually activate the ring or perform the action.

This ring requires activation. Activation is a standard action. Specifically, when you ACTIVATE this ring you get to make one attack at this reach as the benefit of activating it.

Since you cannot activate it as part of an AoO, and activation of this ability is REQUIRED to use it, you cannot have this reach during any AoO.

Rules for reference:

Pathfinder SRD, Magic Items, Using Magic Items wrote:

To use a magic item, it must be activated, although sometimes activation simply means putting a ring on your finger. Some items, once donned, function constantly. In most cases, though, using an item requires a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. By contrast, spell completion items are treated like spells in combat and do provoke attacks of opportunity.

Activating a magic item is a standard action unless the item description indicates otherwise.

This is obviously NOT a constant item, so the bit about "once donned, function constantly" would apply to a Ring of Sustenance or a Ring of Invisibility, but not to this ring; it falls under the following sentence "In most cases, though, using an item requires a standard action" as supported by the actual description text of the Ring of Far Strike.

But forget 30' threats. That's amateur hour.

If you want to see how to threaten all enemies within 600', read this thread.

Long arm, abyssal blood rager, enlarged, wielding a Sarissa. That is a 60' reach you threaten although it is one cone of a direction. That is still pretty awesome.

I don't see how... Sarissa is 15 feet. Enlarged with a Sarissa is 25-30. Long arm only adds 5 to that.

If you're saying that long arm is doubled on enlarge and that is again triped with the sarissa you're reading something I've never seen printed for long arm or reach weapons. The weapon doesn't get longer just because your arm does (i.e. just because you're natural reach increases which is what reach weapons are based off of does not mean that the weapon also is getting longer).
