Adding to Caster level

Advice

I have a sorcerer who I want to be able to raise his caster level. It does not have to be continuous. 1/day is fine. Can you advise me which items would work. Obviously there is the ioun stone, I am looking for other options.

Karma Bead and a decent UMD score to fake being a Divine caster

there are traits like gifted adept, but those usually work for only a single chosen spell

For a specific magic school - spell focus.
If it's to cope with multiclassing - the trait Magical Knack will help.

Means to boost caster level generally are, somewhat intentionally, rare. Though there are rules that provide an ok guideline for making new magic items.
A guideline on that is that the ioun stone in question is priced at 30K (if I recall correctly) - were that to actually take up a body slot, the price would be half that.
If creating charges/day - divide the cost by 5/charges. i.e. the item would be worth n*(30K/5) where n is the number of charges per day.
Personally unsure what would be a reasonable duration on a charged version of +1 caster level. Maybe for a round?

Spell focus does not raise the caster level. It raises the DC of the saving throw.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Do you want to increase your Caster Level in general, or while casting? The former has only a few options: the drug aether, and the spells sharesister and death knell among them.

This thread has a lot of ideas.

Mage's tattoo works, and is available for free as part of a sorcerer's archetype.

A friendly cleric with the arcane sub-domain can help.

dhampir wizard favored class bonus, karma bead, ioun stone, death knell, death wine, deific obedience, altar of X (diety), mage's tatoo, bloatmage initiate, spell perfection (doubles effect of mage tatoo and bloatmage), dark magic affinity (teifling racial trait), gifted adept. my necromancer has 50 caster levels with animate dead using this sort of stuff.

Alternate spell-casting: overclocking spells.

Overclocking spells wrote:

Using the overclocked spells variant, confident spellcasters can attempt to weave more power into their spells as they cast them. This is not without risk: deviating from the stable, standard formulation of the spell risks collapse of the spell and the magical energy therein.

As a swift action while casting a spell, a spellcaster can attempt to increase either the spell's DC or her caster level for the spell. She must attempt a Spellcraft check with a DC equal to 15 + the spell's level + the minimum caster level of that spell for her class. If she succeeds, she can increase either her caster level or the DC of the spell by 2. If she fails, the spell is not cast and she loses the prepared spell or spell slot. If she fails the Spellcraft check by 5 or more, she also suffers a mishap, similar to a scroll mishap.

Many thanks for the ideas. Kama beads is an idea I would not have thought of. Mage's tattoo is worth looking at when a feat comes round.

My problem is whether to take teleport when I next level. Currently I will not be able to take the whole party. Hence the level increase does not need to be permanent.

I will have to balance the cost/benefits
