Carrion Crown ideal party?

Advice

I'm getting ready to run the Carrion Crown adventure path and my party of 5 is looking for advice on what would be the best races/classes to play. Allowed races are standard + aasimar, tiefling, dhampir and skinwalker. All classes are allowed within reason, though certain archtypes will need a good background justification to be allowed(ie: gubslinger except Bolt Ace, or Synthesist Summoner)

My group usually doesn't play optimized characters but they're wanting to make a strong party since I've already warned them that this will be a mature dark game in which playing goofy will get them killed.

Any good suggestions on what would be the ideal party makeup?

i know nothing about carrion crown but i'm going to suggests 5 wizards

Someone to work a crowd, a cleric and a wizard, any thing else will do just fine:-)

I'm currently running this (up to the third book).

I strongly recommend at least one positive-channeling cleric. Other channeling classes are a good idea too - the hex channeler witch archetype will do well, or a life oracle.

Knowledge is power. Inquisitors will shine here, as will any other character who can make lots of knowledge checks about obscure monsters/topics. E.g.:

Spoiler:
In Haunting of Harrowstone there are ghosts, haunts, animated objects, and poltergeists. Each of these requires slightly different methods to handle, and the party definitely benefited from almost every character being able to recognize that.

Depending on how you run it and what your focus is, having at least two characters with strong user interfaces will save a great deal of grief. There are a lot of things that can be made much simpler by talking them out - but this only applies if as a GM you emphasize and reward that.

If I had to put together an ideal party, it might look something like this:

1. Inquisitor (Pharasma, perhaps, thematically)
2. Cleric of positivity
3. Ranger of hating things that aren't properly alive (undead/constructs)
4. Witch of hex channeling and healing
5. Wizard of transmuting OR impossible/undead mixed bloodline sorcerer

The last one on there is added to

Spoiler:
mess up all the undead AND constructs in the campaign.

Have fun! I *love* this AP and am having a fantastic time running it.

Liberty's Edge

2 Clerics (1 Str Based (Gorum?) 1 caster/buffer (Evangelist)) 1 Ranger (Trapper) 1 Wizard (Necromancer) Paladin would be handy too …

That I think would cover all the bases and provide enough to be able to manage this.

I nearly wiped my party with this campaign a few times due to lack of knowledge and ability.

EDIT: yup what Quibblemuch said

Hmm, as long as you cover the bases I think you are quite okay. My choice would be something like:

- Cleric (or oracle or warpriest), preferably of Pharasma: there will be plenty of work for them, and Ustalav is Pharasma country
- Bard (or inquisitor or evangelist cleric, maybe even rogue): there are times a bit of flair and taste work well, and they can support the group
- Barbarian (or ranger, paladin or inquisitor): there will also be times when you need to bring the smackdown. Knowing your way around the place doesn't hurt either.
- Wizard (pref. necromancer, diviner or transmuter, alternatively sorcerer or witch): Knowledge and arcane power will both come in very handy now and then.
- Most any fifth character works well when there is some synergy in the group. I would go for an alchemist for the versatility and some mad scientist vibe (why let the NPCs have all the fun) or warpriest for the crusading against the darkness theme, but really, knock yourself out here.

As for races, go with whatever works with your concept, but keep in mind Ustalav is fairly xenophobic and non-human races are not typical (and often disliked). A possible party would be:

- Alchemist (elf or tiefling, possibly vivisectionist)
- Warpriest of Pharasma (human)
- Barbarian (human, HElf, HOrc, or dwarf)
- Wizard (gnome or human)
- Bard (I'd go aasimar or human dirgesinger bard for style, but the base is pretty good too).

Silver Crusade

1. Cleric, it's basically in the box
2. Paladin, lots of time to shine and a solid team member
3. Alchemist, knowledge skills and great CC help a lot here
4. Bard, god knows you need someone to keep your spirits up while other spirits are attacking you
5. Inquisitor, again just a great team member and fits with your god theme
