Would you read a new blog or watch a new youtube channel on Pathfinder advice (rules, builds, gm tips, etc?)

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

As the subject line says. I have been having some crazy thoughts lately. Though this is not very likely to follow through, I thought I would ask so I can save myself a lot of wasted time and effort.

Can't really do a poll here, so just looking for basic responses such as the follow:

  • Yes, I have read some blogs looking for RPG advice and would welcome a new one.
  • Yes, I have watched a few videos for advice on RPG games and would watch a new one.
  • No, I feel there are too many blogs and youtube channels out there already.
  • No, I have a favorite and would not pay attention to a new one.
  • No, I generally don't seek advice for games.

I've done a lot of thinking lately on doing one of my own, perhaps you'd be interested in a Cooperative effort?

That could be a real possibility. PM me your e-mail. That way if I do decide to take this leap, we can discuss things further.

No, I can generally get plenty of RPG advice on forums, especially since I can make a topic requesting advice on whatever specific topic I need.

I might enjoy the content of some users enough to follow them to their blog (if they had one), but they post on the forums so there's no need for that step.

Yes, I would watch or read it if it was done well and kept my attention.

@Gregor and Petty- Thank you both for your input.

Edit: @knightnday- Thank you as well. You ninja'd me there, lol.

I always welcome differing viewpoints, be it on gaming or otherwise; so yeah, I'd watch/read a Pathfinder-based blog/youtube channel.

@Doom- Thank you. Glad so far to see more yays than nays. I do welcome votes for no because I would like to see contrasting reasons.

I would be swayed if the advice was not only stuff I could use, but original stuff I hadn't seen before. A great writing voice/humor would also be more or less required.

I enjoy listening to various Podcast about D&D and pathfinder

Would I listen:

I would certainly give it a chance and listen
To Maintain my listening over time, it would have to be well done,
provide thoughtful organized and stimulating information.

Yes, there are many Youtube videos about Pathfinder (and D&D)
However, I have only found a few that are consistently worth a listen

Of course "Know direction" tops the good list!

For those that posted or anyone else out there as well:

Please rank (or state pick most important) content you would most like to see:

  • Product reviews: Primary and Third-Party Publishing (As this may extend beyond Pathfinder)
  • Player Advice: tutorials, build help, general adventuring tips, etc.
  • GM Advice: help solving rules questions not covered by faqs and errata, Campaign design help (worlds, adventures, quests, etc), Solutions/advice on out of game topics for keeping the game fun, Game Balance issues
  • New free resources to keep things fresh (new traps, monsters, plots/hooks, campaign setting, adventures)
  • Random trivia/did you know facts for D&D/Pathfinder
  • Personal favorites (monsters, mechanics, adventures) updated or converted for game use
  • Everything!

This is not an immediate project, but it may come to pass before the end of the year (would like to have some content ready before jumping into things).

What I would most like to see (hear, rather) would be a good, succinct, professional podcast. Nearly all of the of the gaming audio podcasts seem to be a couple/few guys rambling on and getting sidetracked into stories/inside-jokes/unrelated commentary and without any editing. Something in the range of 20 to 30 minutes, staying on topic, and editing out the false starts, errors, and re-dos, please.

    As to the content (ranked):

[1] GM Advice: help solving rules questions not covered by faqs and errata, Campaign design help (worlds, adventures, quests, etc), Solutions/advice on out of game topics for keeping the game fun, Game Balance issues
[2] New free resources to keep things fresh (new traps, monsters, plots/hooks, campaign setting, adventures)
[3] Product reviews: Primary and Third-Party Publishing (As this may extend beyond Pathfinder)
[4] Player Advice: tutorials, build help, general adventuring tips, etc.
[No] Random trivia/did you know facts for D&D/Pathfinder
[No] Personal favorites (monsters, mechanics, adventures) updated or converted for game use
    [Definitely Not] Everything!

I'd hit that. Seriously, I've watched stuff on the subjects and read tons of blog posts specific to PF, so I'd likely read your stuff. I plan on dropping my own blog to post encounter ideas for PF games. It'll hopefully be a sort of rolling random encounter chart with tips and suggestions on how to work them into your game.

I would read a few blog posts.

But video, no. You'd have to have a pre-established reputation as someone with something worthwhile to say - that is, you'd have to be someone like RavingDork or Jason Nelson, or come highly recommend by someone whose opinion I trust to have value.

I would subscribe to your blog/youtube.

Thought I would really appreciate something well structured and self-explanatory. The info should be easily discovered, and helpful to the player, i think the most efficience way is with examples.

    Also;

*Yes, I have read some blogs looking for RPG advice and would welcome a new one.
*Yes, I have watched a few videos for advice on RPG games and would watch a new one.

    Regards.

    You guys are all great.

I will most likely launch the blog within the next month or two while gathering enough content to make the first visits worthwhile.

The videos may come later depending I how things go. I have a lower quality digital camera and mic which would not be fun for anyone. As such i plan to invest in better ones before treading on that ground.

So far, here is what I am seeing:

    • Regardless of the avenue taken, You guys would prefer something that is professional and can give an air of authority without coming off as silly or unorganized.
    • Information should be helpful with good examples.
    • Original content a must (including free resources).
    • Need to establish reputation as someone with ideas and content worth listening to before jumping into videos.
    • Something beyond what is already available from the forums.

(There is a slight divide on whether video/podcast or blog. The ideal combination I am after is a blog first and sets of videos after.)

Thank you everyone for all of your help. Everyone had amazing constructive feedback and I really appreciate that!

Anyone else (or those coming back), I will continue to watch this for other opinions. I really want this to project to be geared towards helping players/gms/gaming groups all at the same time.

I feel like I should explain further why I won't watch videos of "just some guy" talking about a topic.

The Internet is full of poorly edited, pointless talking-head videos. Really. So, so many proofs of Sturgeon's Law.

    I'm a fast reader. I can't even audiobooks because they're soooo slooooooow.

Writing text forces you to discipline your thoughts. You can shoot, watch, reshoot, rewatch, re-re-shoot your videos, but it takes dedication, teamwork and experience to produce video that's up to the quality of what a halfway decent writer can create. Watch a few TedTalks or episodes of TableTop, then compare to Random420d00d360Illuminati's video about Carp Herding or whatever.

So, unless I have reason to believe otherwise, I'm going to assume that any video is going to be a poorly edited dronefest of poorly thought out ideas.

@Casual Viking: Don't worry, I consider myself more of a writer than a improv professional (in fact, I am terrible at improvisations). If videos do come up in the future, they will be scripted, planned, secondary to the blog content (as long as I am doing this as a 1-2 person project) and only uploaded when they are ready. I am looking more to produce good quality resources and help rather than quit my job and do this full-time putting out tons of crap every day just for views and money. Thank you for your thorough input, it is much appreciated. I am also glad that there are plenty of people out there that like to read.

@Gregor- Thanks for coming back! Working on content and getting website/equipment/software in the works. I'll make sure to have some new/free resources for you and others hopefully within a month or two.

Also, for anyone with twitter and interested: @DmDRAdventures. That way you know once everything begins. :)

Okay, have the blog portion online now. In the works of a possible collaboration.

You can find the website/blog at: www.thedmdr.com

I plan to update every Thursday with free resources for both players and GMs. There will also be additional postings beyond the scheduled Thursdays.

Please take a look and tell me what you think. If there is anything you would like me to work on (classes, monsters, traps, adventures) just name it and I'll push one of those items up in schedule. I will also offer advice on request, but will continue to frequent the Paizo forums to help at my fancy.

Thank you to everyone that posted above for your help and thoughts.

For anyone not following the post on gamer talk:

    • A Free Adventure was posted today.
    • A new game for players (out-of-game) and characters (in-game) was posted yesterday.
