What sort of mecha? Real robots or superheros?

Sovereign Court

Robots. Piloted.

For an amusing mecha series, I enjoyed Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. Space age robot crash lands on a post apocalyptic earth.
It was an interesting mix of mecha, slice of life, and sci fi.

While we're at it. Recommend me good Mecha and Cyberpunk anime please.

You really can't go wrong with Bubblegum Crisis - many people will tell you to avoid Crash and the 2040 remake, but they have their merits and they are good shows in their own right (IE: Watch them and decide for yourself).

Cyber City Oedo is good, but dated and rather unsafe for work.

The quintessential Mecha anime are probably going to be 08th MS Squad (Gundam), Gundam 0080 (War In The Pocket), Z Gundam... Hm. Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada did well as Robotech, but if you can get your hands on original Macross and Mospeada, they're entirely different series. Original Mospeada remains one of my favorite series, really.

Classic, old-school stuff like Fang Of The Sun Dougram, SPT Layzner, Heavy Metal L-Gaim, Aura Battler Dunbine, Five Star Stories, and the like are kind of acquired tastes. I enjoyed them, but other people might not.

I'm not entirely up to speed on newer C-Punk and Mecha stuff, other people might want to chime in.

Well the defining work for Cyberpunk IS Ghost in the Shell, the popular ones are the original 90s movie and the Stand Alone Complex TV series 1 and 2. But ALL of it is great so have fun.

Mecha? I prefer UC but you might want to start with Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory, 08th MS team, or 0080: War in the Pocket and skip Zeta or Double Zeta.

The problem is that encompases a gigantic scope. Mazinger, Golion (aka Voltron), Gundam, G Gundam, Macross, Full Metal Panic, Five Star Stories, VOTOMS, Raxephon, Appleseed, Aquarion, Evangelion, Dual, Vandread, Tenchi Muyo: War on Genmar, Dunbine, Escaflowne, Captain Earth, Verduous Planet, Big O, Linebarrels, Burst Angel, Gun Sword, Demonbane, The Girl Who Leapt Through Space, STRAIN, etc.

I know they're not as popular on here, but I'd suggest G Gundam Fighter, and Gundam Wing. One is fun to watch and the other has an interesting story.

Liberty's Edge

That's one way to describe G Gundam. :)

Not a wrong way, mind you. ;)

I am glad I wasn't the only one who was going to suggest Ghost in the Shell.

I recommend Cutie Honey (the original 1973 and the new Cutie Honey Flash series (which as I understand it is a full reboot more geared toward girls than the original (which was kinda popular with both girls and boys) not so much the 90's New Cutey Honey, that version wasn't shy about the nudity, although if she really likes the 1973 series, then go for the New Cutey Honey as they are actually sequels taking place 20 years later.)

It's similar to Sailor Moon (though it came out 20 years earlier) in that it's a 'magical girl vs. monster of the week' series, so with half hour episodes it is pretty quick with the action.

Here is a link to the specific version I am recommending (the Cutie Honey Flash I haven't even seen myself, as it's never been released in America, sadly... even this original 1973 version just got released finally in November 2013)

Cutie Honey Complete Series

I love cutie honey! I am also upset that all we got was the ancient and ecchi versions.

Liberty's Edge

Honey was created by Go Nagi... It's all ecchi.

Action and comedy are her favorites. I dont think she takes non-live action romance seriously though. And I showed her Spirited Away (my all time favorite Myazaki film) and she was pretty meh about it.

How about Baccano!? Lots of action, some humor--it jumps around a bit in time, but (unlike some authors I could mention...*cough* Glen Cook *cough*) labels the transitions clearly.

I'm going to recommend something a bit weird for a comedy...

Yamada's First Time

A bit of a subversion of gender roles - the girl is the one who is sex-crazed, but since she is a virgin, she wants to start with a nice, safe boy. Things go downhill from there.

Liberty's Edge

I mentioned it, sadly there is no way to describe it without spending forever explaining it and then it still sounds bad.

The best I could come up with is an over the top sex comedy with no sex.

It is a hilarious comedy of misadventures and teenage insecurity with some romance tossed in and well worth watching.

The part where she imagines herself as the wolf and him as the hapless Red Riding Hood had both my wife and I laughing so hard we had to rewatch the scene.

Grand Lodge

BGHK is hilarious. Watched it on Netflix and then bought the Blu-rays.

BGHK? Please explain.

Liberty's Edge

The show we were discussing, Yamada's First Time: B Gata H Kei. It's original Japanese title is B Gata H Kei, literally Type: Style: H.

The first part is a reference to a curious stereotyping of blood types in Japan and the main character matching those of type B. The second part is that the letter H is used as a stand in for something 'perverted', which also describes the main character.

There's no real way to describe it without it sounding stupid and disgusting, like I said the best I can do is: Wacky teen sex comedy romance, but with no sex or nudity.

not quite:
There is nudity in the final episode - but the dialogue is all inner monologue about how nervous they are about it.
Liberty's Edge

If your watching the DVDs. There wasn't in the broadcast or simulcast.

The bolded part is the premise for quite a few anime. Some are good, some are bad.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

My first anime (unless you count kid's shows like Pokemon) was FLCL.

Normally I wouldn't recommend it at a first anime, but it does have stuff happening all the time.

Edit: The above mentioned Baccano! is great, but man it has a lot of characters.

I think something short, under 10 episodes, might be a good starting point. Some animes can just drag on. That said, FMA:B and Parasyte are pretty great as well. I still can't get the OST out of my head.

Don't make me feel these sad things again. ;_;

I saw it on Netflix myself.

And one I can't believe I haven't mentioned yet..

Which would be from the DVDs.

Liberty's Edge

Oh, and speaking of Little Red Riding Hood, Ōkami-san & her Seven Companions.

Full Metal Panic! might also be an option. High School hijinks, love triangle, clueless hero, tsundere heroine, someone with weird powers, and mecha all in the same show - it hits all the big anime tropes. And it is available dubbed if your wife prefers (and also subbed if she prefers that).

I bounce between Netflix and Hulu so much I really can't keep them straight half the time. I know Hulu doesn't get their stuff from dvds at least (or I would have been able to watch the 13th episode of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia there and not Youtube).

Liberty's Edge

Netflix is usually DVDs. Hulu it's variable, but often it's a simulcast so it's censored.

Mazinger Z (known as Tranzor Z when it was first released in the States) is pretty great.

Um what anime do they censor? I know they don't Sailor Moon... it's the full original anime redone recently, not the old DIC hack jobs.

Liberty's Edge

Pretty much everything recent on Hulu is the broadcast version, not the satellite or home video version. Watch the the first episode of B Gata H Kei on Hulu and then on Netflix.

No mention of GaoGaiGar or Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann?

My anime sources are Netflix, Hulu and Anime Network, plus a little YouTube. I went with Anime Network over CrunchyRoll because of my preference for dubbing. Between those 3 I doubt I will run out anytime soon.

I wouldn't say those are for beginners...then again Gurren Lagann...hmmm.

It depends on the person. My wife's intro to anime was the dub for Perfect Blue, and most people wouldn't claim that was for beginners either. But my wife originally had the theory that animation was for either kids or adults with nostalgia. All she had seen of anime was the pokemon and clones that was taking over the airwaves at the time.

Sovereign Court

Like I said, if you want suicidal depression, either watch Bokurano or Evangelion.

Liberty's Edge

Well, if we're talking mecha shows for beginners (which may o rmay not include the OP's girlfriend):

Patlabor (the OVAs, the TV show, the movies).
Macross (Everything but 7. I like 7, but it's weird)
Gundam (Let's see. 08th, 0080, 0083... um... maybe some others. G's fun, but very out there).
Vision of Escaflowne (doubly interesting because it's a deliberate mix of shonen and shojo elements)
Dai-Guard (Office workers saving the world!)
Big O
Dual! Parallel Trouble (Similar to Eva, but with likable characters and without all the squick. Also, part of the Tenchi Muyo OVA universe.).
Tenchi Muyo!: War on Genimar. (the robots are important, but somewhat less central than the hero and the women in his life)
Gasaraki
Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01

Slightly less beginery:
Linebarrels of Iron
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
Martian Successor Nadesico (only because so much of the humor relies on understanding, if only in passing, the various parts of the giant robot genre - particularly the super hero robot genre)

Be warned, the latter is rather melodramatic as well.

Yep, but the Bokurano kicked me right in the teeth. I was beside myself for a few days.

my god.

It's madoka with robots.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Sovereign Court

Maybe both? Just a suggestion, if you're suffering from depression (like I did while I was watching it), don't watch it. I almost ended up needing meds.

there is always Pretty Cure
because magical girls kick ass

While Gurren Lagann is the more recent of the two, one possible clue to whether or not someone could enjoy GaoGaiGar would be how strongly nostalgic they felt about either G1 style Transformers or either 80's Voltron shows.

Good thing I learned to freeze my heart when it comes to shows like that after reading the Elfen Lied manga unprepared.

Depressive stuff, eh? Been meaning to address that previously but never really got around to it... until now.

How's about a slighly different (but tangentially-related) media/medium, one more suited to being much more "noble-bright"? I speak of none other than Ultraman Mebius, a live action 2006 tokusatu production.

It firmly belongs on the viewing list of any good-aligned tiefling protector of goblin babies, if it wasn't already; the special effects might seem slightly dated but is still very much watchable; the female half of the viewing crowd need not worry about any major refrigeration of the various female cast members, sexualized fan-service, or failure on the Bechdel test front.

Of course, it's focus is all about the costumed special effects mixed martial arts entertainment, so here's a sampler of what one can reasonably expect from that show. Not necessarily for everybody, but what's the harm in giving it a chance?
