PFS core pally help

As title says, PFS core campaign. I just got access to an owl bear companion(bear companion stats). Core campaign, probably the best route would be paladin, but should I do a small mounted charger(or just fight from owlbear back), or start as a half orc but still substitute my mount for an owlbear(is it legal, as I can't really ride it).

The idea of a gnome riding on an owlbear is pretty funny though.

Paladin bond mount requires that you be able to use it as a mount. Bears start as small and only become medium at level 4. So you can't take it as a bond mount unless your small and at least level 4. So using core only you can only use Halfling, or Gnome.

Mounted combat for small characters is not bad. It is much better then it is for medium characters. The down side is you will have the first 5 levels that you have to play though to get the bond mount.

Example: Suggestion of what I would do using core only.
Halfling
Ranger
Str 10
Dex 18
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 14
Cha 10
Weapons
Kukri(2) 1D3 (18-20/X2)
Composite Longbow 1D6 (20/X3)
Feet's
1:Weapon Finesses
Ranger2: Precise Shot
3:Deadly Aim
5:Two Weapon Fighting
Ranger6:Improved Precise Shot
7:Point Blank shot
9:Rapid Shot
Ranger10:Many Shot
11:Improved Two Weapon Fighting

Mort... I know what scenario you just played. I GM'ed it at a con this weekend and will be applying it to my Lunar Oracle. We'll have to compare notes on this one.

Do Paladins get access to bears as mounts? Looking at the rules, it doesn't say you can't, so go for it. I will note that you will also want to play the sequel to that scenario if you haven't already.

I do think that riding an owlbear into battle could be great fun. You'll certainly make an impression everywhere you go.

Hmm

PS I just realized that you are finally joining the paladin party. Hooray! What deity will you worship for this?

Paladins do not usually have access to bears as mounts, but the way that chronicle was worded..

"If you possess a class feature that permits you to take a bear as an animal companion or mount that progresses as an animal companion, you may instead gain the services of an owlbear"

I am not sure if it will actually open up the choices paladins get on their mounts( I felt it would from reading the above), but again this is on a brand new character, so if a paladin does not get any use out of that boon(as in it does not open the option to have a bear companion), then I will think of something else (open to suggestions) that can use the boon.

If so, it will probably mean I need to create a druid (already have one), as nothing else in Core has access/won't be gimped (because of no boon companion). I am less inclined to rolling a druid as I already have one, and to fight mounted on an owlbear will limit your wildshape options (Sorry, there's still quite a bit of dirty optimizer in me).

If I were rolling a pally with an owlbear companion deity would be Erastil. And I've yet to join the paladin ranks yet...its still dependent on whether a paladin can have an owlbear mount ;)

Mort --

You may want to check the rules forum then. Because I'm not sure. The wording under Paladin seems to allow for other exotic mounts, but it does not list Bear.

It does list BOAR, a mount that is also given a great boon in the adventure that follows the one you just played. Play that one, and you'd have the awesomest war pig in all of core. It's too bad if druids would be the only class to be able to take full advantage of the owlbear boon in core campaign.

As a paladin or cavalier, what mount can I have?

As a paladin, your divine bond mount must be at least one size category larger than you starting at 1st level. If you’re a Medium PC, your mount must be Large. If you’re a Small PC, your mount must be at least Medium. You may only select a mount from the listed mounts on page 63 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook unless another source grants access to additional creature choices. As a cavalier, you may select a mount from those listed on page 33 of the Advanced Player's Guide. No additional mounts are legal in Pathfinder Society Organized Play except when granted from another legal source.

So Hmm is correct only the ones listed under paladin are legal. So as a paladin even with the boon you can't take bear. So you can't take the owlbear as it requires you to have access to bear animal companion first.

Uh oh. But I want an owlbear companion! Its sooo flufffeeehhh!

Druid time I guess. What kind of druid would go well with an owlbear?

I would just urn it by the DM. I designed a gnome paladin that rode a moose. It was an absolute blast!

In CORE PFS, the only options are Druids or Clerics with the Animal Domain for Owlbear access.

And the Animal Domain is a weak choice, because you don't have access to the Boon Companion feat.

I guess I should have looked closer at the ranger. I guess the only good option then is the Druid.

Well... it's a weak companion relatively speaking, but it's still a companion from nothing more than taking a domain, which is pretty strong for a Cleric. If the idea is to be a mounted warrior, you're better off with Cleric spells on a -3 companion than Druid spells on a full one. Unless you're going for some kind of mounted Wild Shape stuff...
