Spells to use with Umbral Spell / Shadow Grasp

Advice

What are some good spells to use with the Tenebrous Spell, Umbral Spell, Shadow Grasp line of metamagic feats? I have a Shadowcaster wizard and I want to make the best use of these feats, but I am having a hard time finding useful spells to apply them to. Specifically since Shadow Grasp only applies to spells with the darkness descriptor you pretty much have to combine it with Umbral Spell to use it and Umbral spell has this language that seems to rule out a lot of potential spells "You cannot use this feat on a spell with an instantaneous duration or a spell that does not target a creature or object.". I guess I originally thought I'd be combining them with the X Image spells or cloud spells, but that doesn't seem possible. So what are some non-instantaneous spells that target enemy creatures or objects?

*Bump*

I'm still looking for some advice on this.

one thing im going to use it for is a permanent entanglement aura that doesnt affect my character.

Umbral Spell + Shadow Grasp + Arcane Mark (0th level spell) = 3rd level spell slot

Use it on a twig or a leaf or a very small rock and you have a permanent and cheap source of shade and entanglement aura. Make several of these and you can get some serious AoE going (over several rounds). inscribe your Rune of Darkness lite onto sling bullets or arrows or bullets for ranged fun.

Bonus, Arcane Mark cannot be dispelled. It "can only be removed by the caster" or erased with an erase spell.

I have been making good use of Umbral Arcane mark for keeping my Fetchling wizard in dim light for Shadow Blending. I've also considered making a bunch of stones with both metamagics applied to them to hand out to party members, but I still feel like there should be more to do with these two feats besides the Arcane Mark trick.

If you're doing PFS, use Continual Flame instead.

Here are a few spells to slap Tenebrous/Umbral/Shadow Grasp on:

- Any spells that last all day and still provide a benefit, like Magic Aura
- Spells that are instantaneous AoE's can still entangle for 1 round (usually not worth it though)
- All battlefield control spells. Frost Fall and Web come to mind
- Haunting Mists has been fun for me, personally.

The issue with giving shadow grasp marks to party members is that they would have to make saves against the entanglement every time they come within 10 feet of each other, not to mention the first time they come in range of their own mark. The only one who doesn't have to make saves against the entanglement is the caster

Also CN_Minus, you can't use Umbral spell on any spell with an instantaneous casting time: "You cannot use this feat on a spell with an instantaneous duration or a spell that does not target a creature or object."

So if I understand this correctly, if I were to use an Umbral Continual Flame on a dull grey ioun stone, I would end up with a 10 foot radius of darkness around me, and a 20 foot radius of light. Since it's being cast off the Wizard list, it would be a 2nd level spell using a 4th level slot. That means the Darkness would suppress the continual flame for 10 feet. Would the light from the Continual Flame continue to shine in the 15-20 foot squares? And Dim light continue out to 40 feet?

I'm working on a PFS Wayang Arcanist that makes heavy use of Tenebrous Spell on Shadow Enchantment, Conjuration, and Evocation, as well as a few other spells. I've been trying to figure out a way to stay in Darkness most of the time and not completely annoy the other members of the group. I'd still prefer something that has a smaller radius, like 5 foot or a single square, but I haven't come up with an option for that yet.

btw, if you have multiple objects with the Umbral/shadow grasp mark on your person does someone who comes into the radius have to make multiple checks to avoid multiple entangle effects?

Acid Arrow and Umbral Spell seems like it would be a good combo.

roguerouge you're dredging up old threads with your umbral spell suggestions - a year or three back.

I'm aware. I'm seeing if there's others interested in this topic, might work better to start discussion than new posts.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For one thing, none of the arcane mark shenanigans work. Umbral Spell requires the spell to target a creature or object, and arcane mark doesn't target at all.

But the spells Charge Object, Magic Mouth, and Sow Thought, work and have a duration of permanent, so you only need to do it once.

EDIT: If you get a Metamagic Gem of Shadow Grasp for 1000 gp, you can then get by with only needing to prepare an umbral version of the spell.
