Damn, Dirty Neutrals

Advice

Silver Crusade

One of the major threats in campaign world is the continued involvement of people such as rilmani, elementals, aeons, inevitables and proteans.

Now the inevitables, proteans and the like can be easilly dealt with by stuff dedicated to hitting law or chaos.

A more dire question is, what are good solid spell counters against Neutral opponents?

How do you keep summoned elementals from whalloping you (pro evil or pro good does nothing against them.)

Is there an Aligned Word that hits a True Neutral outsider as hard as Holy Word hits the evil?

How would you build a spellcaster who was dedicated expressly to combating neutrals?

You can banish them with Dispel Balance.

I introduced Protection from Neutrality (while having to choose whether it's on the Good/Evil axis or Law/Chaos axis when cast).

Because as it sits, being True Neutral is a big advantage in a lot of situations.

Dispel balance is good, and remember that TN takes damage from holy word, unholy word, chaos hammer, and order's wrath.

Champions of Balance introduces some spells (such as ardor's onslaught, arbitrament, and I believe a few others) that specifically punish Neutrality. They're exactly what you're looking for.

Yeah I'm familiar with ardor's onslaught. Arbitrament is Holy Word for Neutrals though. Most of the spells from that book were of the 'I whallop you with neutrality' as opposed to 'I whallop neutrals.'

Ardor's onslaught's actually one of the spell abilities a sentient holy, neutral-outsider bane longsword is packing in my campaign.

"I hate these filthy Neutrals. With Enemies, you know where they stand. With Neutrals, who knows? It sickens me."

And it is true, there are really no strong counters to Neutral alignment. No Detect Neutral, no Smite Neutral.

Yeah, the main ones that spring to mind are ardor's onslaught, counterbalancing aura, and dispel balance

Zapp Brannigan feels your pain.

The best way to deal with neutral threats is to negotiate with them rather than fighting them, because they're not necessarily zealous about anything.

There's an interesting set of rules for negotiating with aligned outsiders in this book (full disclosure - I wrote it) if you want to check it out.

I've encountered and played some truely zealous true neutral characters. One of my favorite characters was a druid that kept reminding the paladin that he would be dealt with once the demons were taken care of.

What makes a man turn neutral? Money? Power? Or were they born with a heart full of neutrality?
