Enchanted Fang and Animal Cohorts

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Here's a question about the use of Enchanted Fang, and also a clarification about cohorts.

The spell mentions that it can be played when an animal ally with the Animal trait has been played, or when no Attack spell or weapon has been played.

Since cohorts aren't allies (right ? they're truly "Support Cohort" type, neither boons nor allies ?), and with Leryn only able to provide its d8 of extra damage when a Ranged check is being made (which requires the use of a weapon), this means Enchanted Fang can never be played to augment Leryn's attack bonus... Which seems kinda sad/weird, with Adowyn/Leryn being the image on the spell card.

Am I getting this right ?

Silver Crusade

That's how we ruled it. Adowyn decided to abandon Enchanted Fang pretty quickly in favor of having Agility for both of her spells.

Grand Lodge

Yeah, I assumed that was the case as well since it specifies "ally." And a cohort is a Cohort, not an Ally.

The only time Alain has benefitted from it is when he barefist punches a monster while riding Donohan. But not with a weapon, since he's no longer qualifying for any of Enchanted Fang's requirements.

You could use Enchanted Fang in a combat check in which you use Leryn without a weapon. Having Bats in my deck has kept the Enchanted Fang around for now, for me.

Technically, it's not possible to use Leryn without a weapon (except if you also play an Animal ally), since he can only be played to augment a Ranged Combat check... For which you need to use a weapon (since without a weapon, you can only make Strength or Melee Combat checks).

Noted!

There are way to play Leryn without a weapon, thought I don't think you can do it with just cards from WotR. Spiny Shield from RotR would do it. Not sure if we'll see something similar in WotR or not.

Spiny Shield would be though choice to go with in my group, Balazar needs its ability to add magic to an attack more than Adowyn needs the ranged. As of now I think he just has Sacred Prism.

That being said, i still think Agility is a better card than Enchanted Fang for Adowyn anyway. Guaranteed plus 3 means 50% of the time it's better, 25% equal, and 25% of the time worse. And it will add to multiple checks in a turn.

I think Adowyn is pictured on the card since she is mostly meant to work with Animal type allies. This isn't readily apparent from her character card but her role card, Pack Leader at least, uses Animals a lot more. Weapon or not, Enchanted Fang will apply as long as an Animal ally is involved. I would just question wether or not Enchanted Fang will still be useful when that Role Card comes into play. Right from the gate, however, I'd say Enchanted Fang is really there to help out Balazar.

I ust played through my first test run with Adowyn and came to the same question.
So in her suggested starting deck she can only give those fangs to her Frilled Lizard (therefore only against a card that has the veteran trait) or instead of a weapon but instead of attacking with her Strength d6 plus this d4 she could simply go for a divine attack spell.

I was already picturing not only Leryn with magiacal fangs, but Donohan, too. Pretty sad that it does not work with all cards with the animal trait.
