Query re Minkaian succession

The AP doesn't appear to explain how the imperial succession normally works. I'm particularly wondering how the throne changes hands between houses. (I know the plot doesn't need this information, but my players will probably ask!) Have I missed something? Or does the Dragon Empires Gazetteer (which I don't yet have) happen to give an explanation?

I don’t know if it’s explained in detail anywhere. But given that each ruler has to receive the blessing of the previous empresses and emperors at the Imperial Shrine (page 14 of The Empty Throne), the imperial succession may work something like this:

  • Normally, the heir of the current ruler will go to the Imperial Shrine and receive blessings from the former rulers.
  • But sometimes there’s no obvious heir, or the former rulers refuse to give their blessings to the nominated heir. In this case, the houses may each send candidates, and one will be blessed by the former rulers.

A good point about the blessings, thanks.

Yep, I found KetchupKing's list while I was searching -- it's very neat!

Yeah, when I was piecing this together for my home campaign (I have no insider knowledge, but I always do a lot of research for my home games), at first I thought that the ancestors picked from the full pool every time (or at least, picked the best choice from the whole current house of the five), but the dead jealous spirits of younger siblings who become greater shadows in Part 6 were evidence (the only solid evidence) that primogeniture is definitely the default (we know that Shigure wasn't initially in line, but that could have just been because he was a loser), despite the ancestor component.
