Uses for the Traveler's Any-Tool

Advice

I have been informed of a wonderful little item called te Traveler's Any-Tool. I have spent a Very Long Time coming up with all the things I can mould it into. I'm looking for anything more I can use it as. Mundane items can save your character's life. Grappling-Hooks have saved my first character's life more than any other magical item and can be used for thousands of situations.

Knowledge Is Power!

Here is a list of the things I have come up with already. Warning! It is at least 86 items long.

Spoiler:

Pliers
Lock picks
Grappling Hook Launcher (simple)
Skeleton Key
Engineering/Repair Tools
Saw
Spile
Crowbar
Pick-pocket Cane
Umbrella
Periscope

Loop

Ice-picks (the rock-climbing ones)
Muzzle
Slingshot
Bowl
Ear-Trumpet
Twine
Claws/Talons

Shovel
Wrench
Tire-iron like object
Lever
Plug
Magnets
Splint
Various frames
Decorations (like faction symbols put on shields for disguises)
Brace
Shackles
Manacles
Chain
Clamp
Sconce
Spring
Block and Tackle
Bear-Trap
Scale
Stretcher
Buoy
Caltrops
Marbles (metal)

I fear that a number of your suggestions are not valid.

Anything duplicating or used as a weapon would count as improvised even if allowable

I do not interpret the Anytool as separating into multiple items, so I would not think it could substitute for marbles, caltrops, stilts, screws, nails. Perhaps you could make one of these items, but what would you do with one stilt or one caltrop?

The description says it can be "folded, twisted, hinged and bent to form almost any known tool." It doesn't say any known item.

Some of your suggestions are probably too complex and have too many moving parts ie Water pump, lock, Astrolabe, water filter.

Some of those would require specialised skills on the part of the user - a glider frame would require a user who can clearly visualise an effective glider frame for example. The item description makes it clear that it's an improvised weapon at best which makes some of those impossible (portable cannon) and others a bit ineffective. Also remember it only weighs 2 lbs. & can only duplicate one tool at a time.

Anyway, a couple of other tools

Inkpen or paintbrush (q.v. craft (calligraphy) or craft (painting))
Measuring tools (length, volume or angles)
Backpack (q.v. profession (porter))
Tongs
Gloves, gauntlets or a hard hat.

While it can only be one item at a time I think some uses could be made possible by transforming it into two tools held together by a length of chain.

Tongs + Hammer for smith's tools, knife and fork for eating, pot and ladle etc.

Prosthetic arm?

Out of those? Pen and brush I'd see, as well as measuring tools and tongs. There's tools that do that today.

Backpack? No. I'd say it could be a hook to hang stuff on, but not a backpack. Even with magic I can't imagine something enchanted to be a tool transforming into a cloth bag. This would also toss out gloves too.

Gauntlets are a weapon, so no. They and a hard hat would also be armour in certain situations; I can imagine only rare scenarios where a crowbar held on your head would be as protective as a hard hat. And shouldn't you be already wearing gloves and maybe even a helm for some of the things you're doing?

Someone suggested prosthetic arm. I'd grant it as an ARM. But a hand has too many moving parts, so none of those. And that prosthetic arm is not going to be much different than a 'mundane' one, I think.

It does call out being usable as Craft tools in most circumstances. This might be allowing some 'reasonable' splitting--I wouldn't fault someone for using this as a mess kit, for one.

And if you're too abusive, your GM might decide it's time to test out how many ranks you put in Craft (blacksmithing) or Knowledge (engineering) or whatever skill he/she wants to test your character on in order to turn a magical multitool into a water clock.

Lacks imagination. A backpack isn't so much a cloth bag as a means of carrying something over your shoulders. I'm imagining a bunch of loops and hooks; I saw a German tramper with something like that once.

Gloves/gauntlets: protective gear for the hands when you're sticking a hand into something dangerous or picking up something dangerous to the touch, not so much an effective weapon, sure. It's rather more than a crowbar and if you can't imagine something to protect your wizards' head being made from an anytool that's your loss. I don't think there's any line in the description preventing it from being 'armour in certain situations'.

But I do agree that some uses might require ranks in a craft or knowledge, or even a check, hence my point about the glider frame.

I admit the astrolabe was too far. I just put down whatever came to mind, but, as for the other questionable things imagine them as simple and dumbed down as possible. The portable cannon is just a barrel on legs where a Mage can provide propulsion. The glider is a mere simplified hang-glider (a triangle that can hold griffon mane) with arm an leg handles. Marbles being connected by a thin twine as stated by someone else. But, I did go too far on a few things. I just like to use utilities for Everything. Gas mask is just a mask that HAS to be used with other items. As for the weapons they are if for instance you are trapped in jail and have Nothing else and would like to use it rather than your fists.

Yes, you would need craft ranks for some of these but they can be created, however simple and unorthodox (but better than nothing).

This is just meant to adress the possibilities and push the limits a little as after all, it all depends on your DM.

Your opinions are appreciated.

Also a snorkel can be a use.
Forgot to include that.

A gauntlet would be a weapon, but a protective glove might not be as long as it wasn't made to protect your hand from weapon strikes (armor). An Earthbreaker Hammer would be a weapon, but a Sledge Hammer wouldn't be. Both of those might be made from Traveller's anytools, but if you tried to use those as weapons, they'd be Improvised Weapons.

I once made a traveller's anytool into a merchant's scale in a PFS Campaign to solve a weighing puzzle in a tomb.

A screw pump might be possible.

Make it intelligent. Then you can say "Go fold yourself".

Actually, an intelligent AnyTool might be a fun item to have.

Let's face it, this bad boy is the early prototype for what would one day become the Doctor's sonic screwdriver. :D

Wasting all your skill points on every craft skill you can think of once you get one of these things?

That's what one of my characters did once, and then he had no skill points left for knowledge skills and couldn't identify monsters. Granted he could build everything from ships to shoes with a +10 bonus, but not helpful in a fight.
