Craft versus Profession

Rules Questions

What is the difference between Craft(Clothing) and Profession(Tailor)

Craft clothing means you can MAKE clothes. You would earn income based on the number of shirts/pants/robes/etc. that you sell, which would essentially be itemized.

Profession Tailor means that you could be making money by selling clothes, or by making alterations to pre-existing garment, repairing damaged clothing and possibly working as a consultant for someone making the purchase of various threads, fabrics, stuffings, etc. that would be a part of textile manufacturing or fashion design. You could also conceivably make all of your money drawing patterns for other people to create clothes based on your models.

Profession tends to be a more elaborate skill than Craft. Craft Beer is a more specific task than Profession Brewmaster. Often the "profession" skill can absorb the "craft" skill.

In terms of the PF game though: Do you sell some THING?(Craft) or Do you sell some SERVICE?(Profession).

And of course I think- from a meta game perspective- players tend to pick the one that fits their stats (ie- the Monk takes Profession Tailor and the Wizard takes Craft Clothing)

If only this had been discussed before.

Or this one (read the whole thread).

Maybe, but not necessarily in a game where the GM understands the difference. See this, for example.

You seem to be on the right path with your example of profession vs. craft in tailoring.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Craft is for making items.

Profession is industry knowledge (identifying who made an item, for example).

Bluff covers sales and marketing.

Appraise is for determining value.

Sense Motive is for identifying a lie about an item.

Sleight Of Hand is for unauthorized 100% discounts.

Perception is for identifying people getting unauthorized discounts.

Escape Artist is for, well, you know.
