Adowyn & Leryn

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Adowyn's cohort Leryn has these two powers: "Display this card to examine the top card of your location deck" and "While displayed, recharge another card to put this card in your hand."

Since powers can be used without limit inbetween steps, it appears that this allows Adowyn to recharge up to her entire hand by popping Leryn in and out of the hand repeatedly. So not only can she cycle through her deck very quickly, she also doesn't suffer the standard problem of having to discard if she acquires some cards without spending any, as she can push extra cards into her deck instead.

Is this intended? It seems very powerful.

If you plan on never using the other power, sure you could do this. If someone is really going to ignore such a big part of the card I really don't see this as an issue.

I'm certainly not ignoring the third power, I've used it to great effect. A free combat d8+ once per turn seems absurdly powerful all on its own. But if you don't end up needing it on a given turn, you're left with free reign to cycle the deck.

It's pretty awesome, but it seems OP. None of the other characters struck me as having any tricks that powerful, not without a lot of checkmarks.

Anyway, I'm not arguing for it to be removed, just checking to make sure I'm not missing something.

Yup, used it aggressively in the first scenario just for that purpose. It's powerful, probably the most on-demand deck cycling in the game thus far, but I don't think it's crazy. Early on you might have junk items, sure, but you shouldn't have that many cards you want to recharge in the first place (aside from extra armor/weapons, and the Hand Crossbow likes having the latter around). Once or twice a turn to get your hand in order is nice. If you're recharging your whole hand to get the cards you want, that's 4-5 cards you're not using.

Exactly. If someone is really taking advantage of this, their deck construction is more likely to be the issue than the cohort.

I agree with most of the other posters, but want to add a response to this specific idea. As a general rule, pushing extra cards you acquire back into the bottom of your deck is a bad idea. Why? Because it dilutes the power of your deck and make it so you will draw the cards your really want t have less frequently. When you pick up random boons you are often better off discarding them (or, even better yet, burying them) than recharging them and being stuck drawing them later in the game.

That's assuming she's acquiring bad cards that don't help her. If you encounter a boon that isn't useful, the best thing to do is choose not to acquire it in the first place.

I assumed, us being three sets in, that comment was more about "hey Kyra, I'll grab that spell for ya" than "ugh, I guess I'll acquire and then immediately discard this leather armor." Especially if we've got a healer in party, our strategy hasn't involved grabbing random boons, even at the beginning of an AP, for a long time.

Speaking of which, at the Manor House Kyra encountered a Leather Armor and pulled, as her random boon to choose between, another Leather Armor. :D

I'm more worried about the possibility of more frequent and random damages we are bound to receive in this AP than diluting the decks 'power,' so I personally wouldn't mind recharging trash cards you acquire.

Yeah this is my gut-feeling too. Cards going back in the deck = healing, even if they're not great cards. Maybe this'll change for me as the path goes on and I acquire some individually-important cards, a +3 bow or whatever, but for the moment, in Adventure B, the chosen Basics in my deck are only one step better than random pulls.

Yeah, that's been the case for my games, too. In early adventures, we usually don't care what the card is; if there's a chance of it being acquired without burning too many resources, we'll try. But starting in Adventure 3 or so, we're a little more selective and might pass on a few. Then by Adventure 6, we don't even bother unless it's awesome.

For survivability, I'm more interested in her power to retrieve Leryn/other animals from her discard at the beginning of her turn. Sort of a weaker version of Lini's rechargable animal allies or, maybe more accurate, a more specific staff of minor healing. I've already used it a few times, sacrificing Leryn for compulsory damage and healing him back into my hand next turn.
