OK, This is your chance to take part in something that I think has never been done before. And I know I am setting myself up for a lot of work and late nights, but I think this could be one of the most interesting challenges ever set before the superstar family.

It begins with Paizo, a company that will soon give us Adventure Path issue #100. The have challenged our minds, our game, our table, our friends for years. They have given us the opportunity to become noticed as a potential game designer of the future. They have taught us, encouraged us and provided feedback on our submissions.

So, as someone on the other side of the fence still, a want to be like so many of us, I thought, how can I show my appreciation for this company that has become so central to my hobby.

Then it hit me.

They have challenged our tables. They have an in company game night. So...

How about WE challenge THEM?

That's right!

I have the formatting skills, I have adobe acrobat to made the pdf, office to make the documents!

So we, the long term superstars who never seem to break that round 1, the Top 32s and alternates, the top 100s and the 100s who don't even make that list have a chance to write collaboratively a celebratory "Challenge Paizo AP" in honor of 100 APs they have given us.

So, to begin, this is a pdf or series of PDFs that we will write and add maps and art to - I will format it all into pdf(s)/word docs and then send these to all particpants and one or two Paizo volunteers who will run our challenge on Paizo game nights, to give us the kill tallies and game updates.

So our first hurdle is finding those Paizo volunteers willing to do this for us on the Paizo side. So there's the gauntlet Paizo - who amongst you are willing to be our "insiders"?

The next hurdle is, there is NO money in this venture. You work purely to put your encounters, creatures, items, art and design before Paizo - not as a "proposal" but as a full blown "gaming challenge". Another route to getting noticed if you will.

I will happily act as lead designer for the project, I have a core idea for the AP sub theme, so I am now looking for those wanting to take part to let me know by private message.

Our first task once I have chosen from those interested will be to decide on the AP story line, I have a skeletal theme which I can propose, and I will be writing some parts too.

So, who amongst you wants to turn the tables on Paizo and give them an adventure, a challenge that will shake them to their gaming core?

PM me if you are interested.

In that PM, let me know what you like to design and write, do you like fluff or crunch, are yo a monster whizz or an encounter genius, are you a master with art packages, an amazing cartographer, etc?

Above all, please tell me as much as you can about how you would like to contribute and how much time you can spare to the project.

I will endeavour to use as many of those willing to participate as possible.

Deadlines:

PMs should be receieved by 12 noon GMT, Friday 8th May, 2015

I will send the skeletal plot synopsis to all those responding on Saturday 9th May, 2015

We will then spend two weeks in conversation via a google doc share, using the comment facilities to thrash out the underlying theme and storyline.

This to complete on Friday 22nd May

I will then break down the tasks for the first part of that adventure, using existing APs as the framework for word counts and the like. I will PM everyone with their assignments and word count targets, and will point to the APs that their assignment should follow for formatting, content, flavor etc.

First draft of work should be returned by the last day of June 2015

I will spend July 2015 reviewing everything, sending edits and change requests all while putting the initial pdf/doc together.

Our aim is to have 1st draft or the first part of the AP complete and ready for proof readers and play testers by the end of August 2015.

September 2015 will see that 1st draft go out to volunteer artists and proofreaders.

The aim, to have Challenge Paizo AP #1 into final edits and ready for issuing by the end of October 2015.

November we will review what we have done, learn from it, read the play reports from the Paizo table, celebrate and then knuckle down on challenge AP #2 - the time table on this one will accouont for 3 months of RPG Superstar, so I will not ask you to give up too much of your time during that period.

Lets do this everyone, lets give something back to Paizo to say thanks for 100 APs.

But please, as exciting as this may sound, IT IS A LOT OF WORK, so please only PM is you are serious and able to spend the time and make the commitment, you need to be willing to take feedback on the chin, to make copious edits and changes and follow through a full development of something that could be unique and special.

Thank you everyone for reading this and giving it your valuable time and consideration.

Please, one last thing, publicise this post to those you know who want to be games designers - lets build not only a challenge but a showcase of as yet undiscovered talent.

Most likely none of them would be willing to step into the legal minefield that this would create. There's a reason that contests like RPG Superstar include a clause that you surrender all rights to whatever you submit.

There's also the very real problem that none of them really have a lot of free time on their hands.

If I understood the purpose of this, I'm not sure why playing a game put together by volunteers would be a legal hazard, anymore than it would be for a Paizo staff member to write about playing a 3PP adventure on a blog or a youtuber doing a Lets Play for an Indie Game.

I didn't see anything about Paizo publishing anything. :|

Because someone who submitted work to this can claim infringement if Paizo later publishes something "that's close to MY idea!".

Every year Superstar comes up, someone puts up a thread where they object to Paizo taking ownership of all submissions. (Demonstrating their ignorance that such IS standard practice for such contests.) You can read those threads, and Paizo's inevitable response to learn more on this topic.

They can do it anyway. You don't need a valid case to sue someone and be a pain in the butt to them. I could sue Paizo right now over something. "Paizo clearly took inspiration from my blog" is effectively the same as what's being suggested and pretty much anyone could attempt to claim some sort of infringement (it'd be futile in both cases but a jerk with a lawyer can be an especially huge jerk).

I will draft something that lets all contributors retain rights to their work and send to everyone before any work is agreed/requested on.

This is a volunteer effort to get your work shown to Paizo in a different way is all it is. I will not publish it. I will include credits of all contributors on every part they contribute to, and include the URL link to their Paizo account.

If Paizo want to publish it (unlikely as we are all new to this game), then they will have all the names and account links to contact people for their agreement. I am confident they would do this and trust them.

If you don't trust this, there is nothing I can say or do to change your mind. As this is purely voluntary, it is up to each individual if they want to take part.

Remember, we should be able to trust Paizo to the extent that if they like something enough to publish it, they will contact the writers and artists before doing so. If they didn't they would just alienate future resources.

There is always a certain amount of parallel design across the RPG fields, so I will include in the volunteer agreement that this is a recognized danger. There isn't a lot we can do about it other than leave the ownership of the contributions with the creator.

So to be clear -

This is a free work to illustrate your skills as a writer/artist.
It will not be published in any form by me.
You retain all rights to your contributions on the agreement that you do not ask for such contributions to be removed from this gift pdf.
It is a gift from us to the Paizo staff and effectively and exclusively to all who contribute. These are the only copies I will distribute.

I am going to extend the deadline for this by a week, not due to lack of response, but because my blog site on games design has been subjected to malware attacks and I am trying to clean things up and make it all safe again.

So, new deadline for stating interest is 12 Noon GMT, Friday 15th May, 2015.

For those of you already saying you are interested, I should now have replied to you all.

Please, if you don't have one, can you create a google account that I can assign to google docs? This can then be used to share and comment on all contributions for everyone AND I can preview the pdf as it is put together for on-going and constant review.

Please let me know via PM your google account (gmail) and how you want your name shown in postscripts for your contributions and the author sections.

I suggest your full name + your main board alias a'la -

Anthony Adam - Template Fu. I can also "click link" your "home" page of your account as exampled, please let me know if you would like this or not. This means if anyone wants to contact your for work, they have your forum contact details to be able to get in touch with you, and a handy link to do so.

For all respondees and those who may still be thinking about contributing...

I will be posting up the brief outline and we will start by expanding that outline via google docs this coming weekend (23/24 May), spending about two weeks thrashing out the story line.

I will therefore need the login id that you use to connect to a shared doc - the document is going to be shared but only by specific login id, so that I can easily trace who contributes to what section.

The resulting pdf(s) will similarly be shared in the same way.

Sorry, I am a little behind.

To get things started, the initial phase is travelling with a circus to events and celebrations around the known lands, the national holidays of the regions of Golarion. In a way, an AP of celebrations to parallel celebration AP 100.

All of this is provisional and up for discussion.

What I have so far is:

Part 1 - The Circus is in Town

Fun circus activities and side shows overlaying a detective style quest to find acts that go "missing". Yes, we are defining stage acts and side shows and game crunch to allow the players to win their ducks, goldfish bowls and the like :)

This to be set in gothic like Ustalav.

Part 2 - Courtly Endeavours

The circus wends it's way to it's next destination, where a tourney is being held to celebrate the birth of a crown prince. This one is the knights chivalrous, which will detail rules for old fashioned jousting, courting of ladies at court and so on.

More high profile revellers go missing here, is it the circus itself or something more sinister.

Part 3 - Ballroom Dancer

I think some sort of grand ball setting here. The PC's will finally discover random portals opening for short times, the routes of incursion and kidnap now plainly known.

Some of the extra crunch should be rules for social engagements, dancing, and so on.

Part 4 - Wedding Revalations

And a celebration in the outer regions, say harvest time.
Here the PC's discover that the portals are nation wide and not concentrated on just cities and major events.

Clues will be thick and heavy in this to the protagonists behind the portals and kidnapping.

Part 5 - Don't Knock, Come on In!

A wedding gives the opportunity for a divine gala, parties in the streets and allows a stop over at another major city.

The PC's discover demons emerging from the portals, a prelude to a demonic invasion world wide! They will meet an advance vanguard, and need to beat it back before the close the portal through which they emerged.

Part 6 - One Hell of a Party!

The finale is a simple but ultra dangerous mission - the PC's are to actually go to hell, find the method by which the portals are generated and destroy them (and at the same time, ensure that they can still return)

What I would like as an underlying theme connecting each chapter is for the circus to start out as one of those tiny half dozen or so wagons country side types that as it travels through the chapters merges with other circus trains becoming larger and more spectacular.

This allows us to start be defining the side shows, the entertainments small scale in the first chapter and use each subsequent chapter to introduce new circus acts and entertainments building to a grand circus by chapter 5.

Couple that with social rules for balls and royal engagements and rules for jousts and tourneys, the whole set should be something quite unique in that it provides a story with epic conclusion and at the same time provide a detailing of a fantasy circus at a scale I don't believe is available anywhere else.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16 , Dedicated Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9 aka Rusty Ironpants

Spotted one inconsistancy on the first read through. If the portals lead to Hell in part 6 then it should be Devils attacking in part 5 otherwise the portals should lead to the Abyss.

Also I assume that we would be doing this under the Community Use license, correct? If so then we can actually reference Paizo IP.

FYI Paizo just announced Ultimate Intrigue at PaizoCon, it will have rules for social combat.

Ohhhh, that sounds interesting. Good spot on the devil/demon thing.

That's one are that we can put up for discussion - do we want to make it a devil inspired invasion whereby we can utilise the devils ability to disguise themselves and move amongst us (sneaky sneaky style) or do we go for the more monstrous demon (when we appear, we get in your face) approach?

I personally think that with Cheliax and available modules and campaigns there, we probably have enough devil stuff already available - and as for demons, well, that allows us to get all sorts of creative and esoteric ;) - and the weirder stuff could fit in with the circus theme quite well... "Come one, come all, see pan and hear him play, but hold tight to your loved one lest you lose her to his charm and guile!"

I'll read up on the community use license, but will repeat that this is going to be totally free - no one will be making a dime from this other than getting themselves noticed for future opportunities.

So, let's start with the first open call - beginning with the circus itself. In the first part of the suggested storyline, the PC's will start travelling with a small circus of around 4-6 wagons, one will contain the circus tent, signs, banners and so on, a couple will be gypsy like caravans, brightly coloured homes to the circus population. Others will contain the stalls, stands and smaller tents for the sideshows and attractions to entice visitors to the circus tent.

So, please send me by PM any side stall attractions rules crunch...

a) The name of the attraction (max 5 words)
b) A read to pc description of what they see when they first encounter it.. (min 30 words, max 200 words).
c) What dangers could be presented by the attraction (200 words max)
i) while it is running
ii) while it is closed during circus down time
iii) while it is on the road
d) What rewards can be won (if any) if that attraction is a competitive one as opposed to a side "show".

Don't worry about detailing NPCs yet, we simply want a goodly selection of pre-circus show entertainments to allow the PCS the ability to mingle and rumor gather and the like.

Don't worry about formatting, I'll handle that as part of putting the selections into a pdf to share and vote on.

e.g. This is an example for a show like submission...

Pan's Parlour

A red and yellow striped tent, crusted with the dirt of age and use, sits behind a small staging area. The hawker calls forth that the show will soon be starting, and at just 1 copper per person!

"Come one, come all, see pan and hear the pipes play, but, I warn you all, hold tight to your loved one lest you lose them to pan's charms!"

The GM can choose whether the creature is male or female but should note that it's music charms those of the opposite sex to itself.

On entry to the tent, you find a number of chairs arranged in 3 rows, slightly arcing around what appears to be a small stage covered with potted trees and shrubs, creating a hidden wild grotto as the setting for the show.

Ethereal pipe music is heard as a creature, half human and half goat, steps out eliciting gasps of horror and wonder from the audience.

The creature, although appearing harmless, is one of the advance vanguards of the invasion, using the circus as cover to assess the lands and spy out weaknesses in those they wish to subjugate.

It wanders free when the circus sleeps, seeking stragglers and those loners who often hand around a circus after the lights dim. It will lead them away, and when far enough away, will open a portal leading the victim from the mortal lands.

While moving, it sits impassively in an cage like wagon, allowing potential customers a glimpse, to enthral and entice them to the circus.

The GM is encourages to entice the PCs or allow them to observe the pan disappearing into the woods late at night with another npc. Allow them to follow it and observe the portal opening. Let them decide if they wish to act or retreat to consider their actions.

It is their first clue that something is odd about some of the circus denizens and that maybe they have stumbled onto something that needs to be stopped.

- in this example, the abilities, CR, etc., are not defined, these and all of its abilities, skills, attacks will be detailed by either a reference to a bestiary entry or detailed in full as a new creature in the adventure indexes.

I think that should be enough to give you a good run at what is needed at this point.

We are starting with the circus as it is the circus that will provide the central and connecting theme between the chapters and so although not all submissions may get used in the first chapter, there is a good chance for submissions to be used to grow the circus as it travels and merges with similar wandering shows.

Any particular "CR level" you want the attractions to be at to start off? Any particular difficulty?

I'm asking for the sake of mechanical crunching. I have several ideas to pitch at you.

A mix of CR is fine as the caravan and circus will "grow" through the AP.

Ideally, we need the CR1-3 range initially, but if you have higher CR ideas, then I will happily file them aside for subsequent chapters.

They may even feed into the storyline providing side quests and hooks that contributers are able to riff off. :)

CR ranges will be something like...

Part 1 - The Circus is in Town

Encounters, etc should target CR 1-3 with maybe some tougher CR 4-5 near the end of the chapter.

This chapter will have the most sideshows and side attractions as it will be a fairly free form investigation and stumble across quests type of affair.

Part 2 - Courtly Endeavours

CR 4-7 in the main with one or two end of chapter CR 8-9

Part 3 - Ballroom Dancer

CR 8-10 with a couple of 11/12's

Part 4 - Wedding Revalations

CR 11-13 with a couple of 14/15s

Part 5 - Don't Knock, Come on In!

CR 14-17 with a couple of 18s

Part 6 - One Hell of a Party!

CR 18+

This last chapter is the "hell" AP closing chapter, so will have very little additional circus extensions - we will be concentrating here on fleshing out a realm of hell and the denizens within and having major encounters at the highest level of play.

This will make heavy use of environment in the adventure design, shifting floors, crumbling walls, lava flows, heat, soot, winds of fire, let your imaginations run wild :)

Although I am thinking what might be a novel twist is if the PC's "invade" hell by joining a "hell's circus"! What sort of things would be in a circus that travels through hell? What sort of sideshows and attractions would be found? This is a potential role reversal for the PC's where the beasts treat them as animals for show.

On my initial scan through, all contributors have shown great creativity - there are of course formatting concerns on some (I can sort this to a consistent level as I build the pdf), some balance issues and CR placement issues in others, so I am going to be busy for a while, so please bear with.
