I don't know whether that's awesome or ridiculous. Probably both.

What do you do if you can't figure out a character concept for something?

I usually ask my wife. She's the secret behind my writing.

Is she logged into your account answering these questions for you?

My beautiful and talented wife is totally smart enough to do exactly that should she wish, but she's also humble enough that she would never try.

Crystal, let me again heap accolades upon you for taking that leap of faith from 'PaizoCon II' (PRFPG's announcement). Your talent is considerable, in art and in writing. It was my pleasure to have met you now several years ago, however briefly, and seen your talent.

A gaggle of people gave you encouragement and accolades back when, it tickles me to no end that you have come so far through your ability and efforts.

May the stars ever guide you onwards and the Gods favor your fortune, for you and your wife.

Crystal, how can some people be so boneheaded about the things going on in the world? How many times have I got to say to my friend, "No! President Obama is not a criminal trying to shame you for being white and emasculating you through gun control! Do you not realize how little sense you're making?!" I don't want to cut him from my life (or the Rise of the Runelords game we're in together) but it's getting aggravating to try and talk to him OOC without bringing charts he'll contradict and articles he won't read.

We've all got our blindspots and biases. Humans are fairly advanced monkeys, trying to build a space-age society and live up to godlike ideals; there are bound to be problems.

At some point you have to learn to avoid certain topics with friends and/or family. Because most of us are fairly good and reasonable people who become very unreasonable in specific instances. In this case, don't talk politics with your friend, and steer the conversation away from these topics when it comes up. Ask him to respect that boundary, too (my father and I have to do the same thing, and it amazes me that the man who taught me almost all my morals can have such a diametrically opposed political opinion).

Can attest first hand that Crystals suggestion is a wise one, needless to say my father and I did not always follow that wisdom, and it was, rough, to say the least. He and I do not see eye to eye on much, and a few things (like sexism and racism) have lead to some seriously unpleasant exchanges, better now that I am 35 and not 18 but had I been wiser and did as Crystal suggested at the time, things would have turned out much better, or at least far more peacful. That said, proud of myself for not putting up with his bigoted 1950's attitude.

But away from the unpleasant recall of past times, and now on to asking fun questions of Crystal, whom knows all.

So, Crystal, ferrets, good pets, great pets, or the best pet?

I hope you're surviving the Gencon craziness! (Are you at Gencon? I imagine this time of year is crazy even if you're not.)

About 30 seconds into reading the Mesmerist, I got fixated on Angela Lansbury's character from The Manchurian Candidate. At the risk of spoiling a film that's 53 years old, she seems like the definitive Harrowed Mesmerist.

Any suggestions for how to use the Harrow with the class in a way that feels natural at the table? Since it moves away from the classic divination focus of the deck, using cards more as triggers, I was toying with the idea of handing out cards to represent different implanted tricks and such.

(While I know nothing's announced, consider me 100% behind the idea of an Occult Harrow Handbook, or similar)

Interestingly, there's also an Investigator around these parts inspired by Murder She Wrote Angela Lansbury. Now I'm imagining a party based around different roles of great actors. Throw in a cannibalistic baker, over-the-top stage mother, and a polymorphed housekeeper and you have quite the party...

How does "have some chick with a nice voice say something in French over the middle-8" work so well for pop songs?

Also, how long do you think it'll be between me being happy that I can post on my phone again and me remembering how frustrating typing stuff on it is?

I'm gonna go with good pets. they're fun and adorable and playful, but high maintenance, too. You have to clean up after them constantly, keep them from exploring anything dangerous, and constantly reassure them that their poetry really is totally deep, and not shallow, self-aggrandizing baby-goth twaddle.

I love the Manchurian Candidate (the original, at least; the remake was awful), and it would be a great fit for the Mesmerist class. if you want to combine it with the Harrow deck, I think the easiest way would just be to scrub off the serial numbers on the Mesmerist's stare powers and various feats. Maybe add a drawback of the stare actually becoming a gaze attack (because the victim needs to look at the harrow card clearly to be affected), but allow the player to draw a single harrow card when he targets a creature with his stare; if the card's alignment matches the target's alignment, they suffer two points of ability damage to the attribute related to the card's suit as the Mesmerist uses the associated imagery and fables to dredge up painful memories and self-doubt. A target can only have 2 points of ability damage from a Mesmerist's harrowing stare at a time; if the Mesmerist applies a new stare and draws a new suit, the former ability damage vanishes.

If you wanted to go for a little bit more of a rebuild, allow Mesmerist to select Witch hexes in place of a trick--anything that affects or targets a specific creature, like Evil Eye, Blight, Misfortune, Suggestion, and Fortune. The Mesmerist can implant the hex in the target of his stare as a full-round action, tying its trigger to a specific harrow card. Whenever the target sees the associated harrow card, the hex triggers on its own; the Mesmerist may show his target the appropriate card as a standard action (though the hex itself may still be limited in how often it can be triggered in one day). An implanted hex becomes unavailable to the Mesmerist until he removes it from his victim (a free action). A Mesmerist can implant one hex in a single creature at level 1, and one additional hex in the same creature at level five and every five levels thereafter, but each hex must be triggered by a separate card and only one hex can be triggered each round (if more than one hex would be triggered simultaneously, the Mesmerist may decide which one activates).

Sounds like Crystal may have had ferrets before, as that is pretty spot on for ferret care (had 6 at once, I should know, but they have all passed on, RIP fur butts)

New fun question:

Elf that uses axes, interesting change up to traditional elf design, or "the creepy anti green-peace" elf that no one understands?

(I am considering a PC elf with lots of axe theme, and an actual good Str score, cause I like different)

We had one growing up. She'd latch onto the dog's ear and make him drag her around the deck for fun. The dog did not consider this fun, but deferred to the ferret as his alpha.

I am in favor of anything that moves elves away from the Dex-based, Weapon Finesse stereotype. I would also have accepted chainsaw

Huzzah for breaking elf stereotypes!

One of our ferrets used to ride our cat like a bull, needless to say, cat did not find this amusing.

Ok, chainsaw wielding techno elf with Str is going to be a thing, maybe make some side money doing stump carving, when not chainsawing stuff, you know, for justice!

Had a player in Jade Regent that played an obese elf fighter using a bardiche, smoked some exceptionally rancid cigars and grew a bushy lumberjack beard. Player bought into it so much first feat was Racial Heritage (human), just to "legalize" the beard.

How does it feel to be the object of worship of a sharp toothed bag?

I have some bad news, then: I plan to go on a while about it. Hopefully I can manage the latter part as well...

Unapologetic Gushing:
You are probably the most important person to me among the Paizo staff... possibly in my life, period.

You're smart, kind, funny, beautiful (more on this to come), and you do amazing work, both on Pathfinder and in general. These aren't unique attributes at Paizo; everyone there has some combination of them. (Except Stephen Radney-MacFarland.) But you manage them all, consistently. That's not the heart of it, though...

You were willing to listen, and to help, when I needed someone more than ever. You were willing to talk to me when I felt completely alone. (You still are, and I can't thank you enough.) I don't want to make too big a deal of the trans thing, but you showed me that a trans girl could be all of those things I listed. You showed me that I can be all of those things as well.

Regarding beauty: I don't like going on about this either, because it smacks of objectification, but when I saw you on that faux-magazine cover, I was confused. "But... it says she's trans," I thought, "and she's far too pretty for that to be true." Yet, it was. You helped me see that I could be beautiful too, if I only got up and did something about it; and to see how many other beautiful girls out there once felt like I do.

You helped me see that I could become part of this industry. I once thought that my writing was too weak to justify showing it to anyone; now, I'm well on my way to working with at least two publishers. And I have no intention of stopping there.

I don't have to hide myself away, roiling in my own anxiety and loneliness. I don't have to doubt myself at every turn, or debate the merits of a tragic act. I have a future, and an identity, and a reason to live. I have beauty, and wit, and I am churning with creativity. I am Isabelle. And I am proud of it.

That's why you're my hero.

...

I guess I need a question...

...

Was that... too much?

P.S.:
Tell Lissa that lots of that applies to her as well. She just doesn't have her own thread. <3

I know this is a thread for questions, and this isn't a question, but I wanted to say it anyway. :)

Crystal, your module "The Harrowing" is the most fun and creative adventure I've played in a long while. I'm someone who uses and collects Tarot decks, and I've always liked Pathfinder's Harrow deck very much.

The idea to build a whole pocket world around the Harrow deck and filling it with living characters from the cards was a stroke of genius. I had way to much fun conversing and sharing tea with Rakshasa and chasing Rabbit Prince around. The Twins were just so awesome.

The Harrowing is my favorite stand-alone adventure. Thank you so much for coming up with this fantastic story!
