Golem Constructor Wizard advice

Advice

Hello everyone :) I'm going to start a new campaign, where I play as Wizard (starting at level 12 or 13, GM hasn't decided yet). I was thinking about creating a Golem, probably as a Shield Guardian. Is there any kind of Golem worth it? I was interested in Alchemical and Glass ones, but I'm not sure. Any advice?

Golems are... tricky.

The problem is that you're level 12ish, making CR9 mooks. Your average mook enemy is going to be tougher than that, so your Golems have uphill fights.

Worse is that when they die, you're out a lot of money-- not like animal companions, which are easy to replace.

A lot of how useful they are will depend on the theme of a campaign, but even if I was interested in building contructs I'd steer away from Golems, until and unless you can make an Adamantine Golem, as those things don't die. Even then I'd invest in the upgrading constructs rules if I could.

Do you have any more information about the campaign? That might help.

The campaign is "City of the spider queen" (the GM will "convert" it to pathfinder rules), so full of traps and mainly underground. Oh, and we're just three players (wizard (me), cleric and bard/dragon disciple)

Sovereign Court

Only golem that is worth it imo, is the homunculus, because he can craft stuffs for you while you are adventuring, walk around with a portable hole, so the homunculus will be crafting in it and give you gear when you need it. On top of it, if I recall correctly, after awhile deep in the underdark, there are almost no places to safely rest and re equip so having a homunculus crafting assistant might be a good idea.

How can the homunculus craft? Does it have the same feats of its creator?

Sovereign Court

Ah crap, I'm thinking of a homunculus type in eberron, dedicated wrigth not sure if your dm is going to allow it tho.

A Homunculus isn't a Golem. And if it gets destroyed, its creator takes damage so they're best kept out of a fight. That said, they're pretty cool.

I'd drop the idea of crafting Golems or any other type of constructs though, and instead go for Simulacra. More bang for your buck.

Vehicles make the best constructs. I have used this to great effect with ships, but adding a burrow speed will mess up underground adventures just fine. The goal isn't to use them to win combat but to bypass it.

No, my dm probably won't allow it! He suggested to create a golem because of the number of player (only 3), so I was wondering which one was better for the battle XD but the cost scared me a little bit...

Battle golems aren't worthwhile because you lose so much money when they're killed.

Necromancy, making expendable, permanent minions is much better. Make bloody skeletons because they heal up by themselves, unless killed by holy means.

Or have your party take leadership, or simply hire a guard?

I want to play a Good character, so probably Necromancy wouldn't fit well :(

Sovereign Court

frankly if you are willing to spend that much money for some extra...planar bidding might be all you need, just get an outsider to help you, for a moderate fee. Now of course, not sure if your dm is against planar bidding stuffs.

But well if you insist on making a construct...I suppose a clay golem is not too bad for the price and CL requirement of 11, should be fine.

So hire some adventurers! You can probably get quite a few for the price of a golem. And they'll gain experience and become better...

This may or may not help you depending on whether wizard or the golem idea is more important to you, but you might consider doing a Summoner whose Eidolon was a "Golem" thematically. Use the biped base type and then your evolutions are modifications to the golem. It would solve your 3 person party problem and you'd still be a strong caster since the Summoner spell list is early access on a lot of spells. If your GM doesn't want you to abuse the summon class ability, pick something like the Spirit Summoner archetype to trade that out for a boost to your "golem". You could even take Lore Spirit so you'd get access to more Wizard like spell utility spells through Spirit Magic and the Arcane Enlightenment hex.

Alternatively, could the Leadership feat be a way to fill in that party gap? Many GMs ban it, but if it's agreed you're a small party and could benefit from a cooperative meatshield then it could work.

It's a bit more flexible than a golem and you can always raise dead them if they snuff it.

Check out Williamoak's Construct Guide.

I like Terra Cotta, but the guide puts Animated Objects as the cheapest.

I haven't looked recently, but I remember trying to find the most cost effective constructs for mass production.

Golems are SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than ordinary constructs. Some people say "golem" but mean "construct". Clarify what your GM means.

The Terra-cotta constructs are cost effective, but might be a little weak for CR. search through http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/constructs for the durability and cost you are looking for.

Just added a post to the discussion for Williamoak's guide.

It has a short list of constructs by caster lever, challenge rating, cost, and name. Should help you decide.
