Making a ninja, first time ever

Silver Crusade

Ok, so I am creating a ninja, (applicant to a game)due to certain flavor aspects. I can be a fletchling so I thought I'd try the class out.

our stats were rolled for us, and got to choose, I chose

15,15,14,14,13,11

Any thoughts on how to help me build a guy from that? I've never made a ninja before.

str 15, dex 15, con 14, int 11, wis 13, cha 15. for a str ninja
if a level of swashbuckler or some other way for dex to damage
str 13, dex 15, con 14, int11, wis 14, cha 15.

potentially trade out the spell-like ability racial trait for the Gloom Shimmer racial trait.

Id propose a single level dip into swashbuckler as well (at level 2) you get finesse for free, 3 awesome deeds and boost your BAB a bit. You can use the 2nd level ninja trick at level 3 for weaon focus if you didnt do so at 1st and at the same time pick the appropriate grace feat. If it's a home game try to get a body-slot item with the same functionality as a ring of the ki master and pick forgotten trick at the next opportunity. Talk to your GM about overriding the "no rogue tricks" part. It won't make you too powerful, but will present a lot of trickery fun

actually, would you consider fletchling or catfolk better as a ninja?

another question, would it be better to focus on getting more ki, or more ninja tricks?

like, I want all of them. (le sigh) for flavor, (especially the bomb ones)

Here is a feat progression I have in mind-

1- Steadfast personality
3- power attack
5- shadowstrike
7- extra ki
9- extra ki
11- extra advanced trick
13- extra ki
15- extra ki
17-

talents-
2- vanishing trick
4- forgotten trick
6- weapon training
8- combat trick
10- Invisible blade
11- evasion
12- ghost step
14- crippling strike
16- Skill Mastery
17-

or-
feats-
1-steadfast personality
3- power attack
5- shadowstrike
7- weapon focus
9- extra ninja trick
11- extra trick
13- extra trick.

I like the first, as it gives me a lot more versatility, and combined with the ring of ki mastery is only double the ki cost, swapping to extra advanced tricks after 10 for a bit.

Fetchling is definitely a stronger option with the added resistances and darkvision. Catfolk would have to be spending ki to venture into the dark withiut tripping or a light source.
I'd advise against taking vanishing trick so early as 2nd lev. 2 rounds of volatile invisibility isn't much. At best you can get a single sneak attack in.
Skip the power attack as well. You're not a full-bab combatant to affod to-hit minuses and you'll probably prefer one-handed or even light weapons forsome dex to damage feat so the gain won't be worth as much.

I agree, dump power attack, you don't need it. Your damage comes from Sneak Attack. Forgotten trick is very expensive for Ki (about 3 ki per use) so you might want to skip it.

Catfolk isn't a bad choice, it you take cat's claw and get claws you get two attacks at full BAB w/o penalties for TWF. Also some of the Catfolk feats are pretty good. I would say Catfolk vs Fetchling is a wash.

For stats I would do
Str 15 Dex 17 Con 14 Int 11 Wis 11 Cha 16.

Lose the power attack. Keep vanishing trick.

2 rounds is often enough to cross an open area and get into position to do whatever nefarious thing you had planned, or launch an ambush and then bugger off so you can repeat it.

Wall crawler is a neat talent, too. If you ditch vanishing trick, look that one up.

Keep Forgotten Trick, but maybe move it up to 6th level due to its expense. Don't ever take the Combat Feat trick. Forgotten Trick is your gateway to any combat feat you need on the fly.

If you're going to go rogue, you might as well grab stuff that you won't get any other way. Getting a climb speed or swift action vanish is more of a draw for me than "weapon focus" or many of the other sleep-inducing feat taxes.

yes, I'll probably be going catfolk, (gonna see if I can diplomacy my way into the dark vision being hour/caster level, since I chose an rp9 over 17 for pure RP purposes)

also, vanishing trick is my favorite, its fun, AND its useful. besides at level 3, I have (decided against PA for now) taken sap adept to better fit his personality, so anyway, at level three I have a ki pool of 6. So that's at least 6 rounds of guaranteed Sneak attack damage.

I won't be going weapon finesse/twf due to a good spread, and will wind up with 16 str and dex 18 at level 8 with only the level increases (str first probably) as I will be two-handing the katana and sap. I do thank you for that though, it got me thinking what I could swap power attack for.

a one level dip in snakebite brawler gives an extra die to sneak attack and bab and unarmed strike for a little flavor. This way by level two you have 2 sneak attack die without sacrificing any bab (in fact it's a little boost) and a boost to fortitude. This is only if you really want that extra sneak attack though as the other benefits aren't spectacular.

I'm not sure what your level of familiarity with the system is, but you might consider looking at the Slayer or the Sacred Fist Warpriest instead of the Ninja.

Ninjas can be frustrating if you don't carefully account for their mechanical limitations.

The Swashbuckler dip is a good suggestion.

Go catfolk, and get claw pounce when u can. Get bludgeoner, sap adept, and sap master. Once you get there, you can charge, make 2 claw attacks at x2 sneak attack each. Also, havent really looked, but deffinatlly get the invisible blade trick.
