Alien Bounty Hunter Idea

Iron Gods

This is inspired by and pretty much completely based off Joe Homes, who mentioned on the Lords of Rust GM Reference that he had such an idea. I shared my thoughts but I'd like to open this up further.

I'm planning on having a recurring NPC, appearing in Lords of Rust first. He will be a vercite cyborg space-pirate stranded on Golarion. While cruising past Golarion, his aethership was attacked by the Dominion vessel from Valley of the Brain Collectors. He was the only survivor and is now stranded on Golarion, just trying to survive any way he can. Now, here's where I'd like the community's help.

One, what class(es) would people recommend?

Two, does anyone know how advanced Verces is in the field of weaponry, as in firearms? We know they're advanced in space-travel and cybernetic technology, but not much else is given.

Last, I'll be pulling character traits and such from pop culture, such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Cad Baine and the Alien Bounty Hunter from The X-Files. Any other ideas would be great!

Well they can build and launch a kaiju at Eox my guess is pretty advanced :-)

If he's modeled after Cad Baine, go for rogue or investigator. Cad Baine's most noticeable characteristic is that he cheats. He always has multiple tricks up his sleeve, and never gets into a fair fight if he can help it.

I initially thought so too, but you'd think they'd have mentioned that, since that'd make them some of the only in the solar system, and high-tech firearms were only ever touched on in Numeria-related content.

Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines.

Well, let me tell you what I did, and how it worked. (And yes, I am a HUGE Cad Bane fan.)

Against my party of six 5th-level PCs, I sent a team of three:

Spoiler:

An 8th-level ratfolk alchemist ratfolk
A 7th-level lashunta starsoul sorcerer lashunta
and an 11th-level mutant Kasatha Slayer (bounty hunter) 10/gunslinger 1 with a missing arm (my Cad Bane).

Their goal was to fill a bounty on one of the PCs, which meant a kidnapping. Here's how I did it.

Spoiler:

The sorcerer cast alter self to look like one of the PCs' Ratfolk allies, then enraged a couple of rust monsters as a distraction. She and the alchemist screamed and ran toward the party, drawing the monsters and flanking the party at the same time. When the PCs engaged the monsters to to save their "ally," the alchemist started nauseating them with stink bombs.
Into the choking smog stepped the kasatha (who had a filter mask, as well as blindsense and dimension door from his mutant abilities), and laid some poison into the target before knocking her out.
The rest of the party got a good look at the attackers before the kasatha grabbed the target and dimension doored away. The alchemist drank his extract of invisibility and booked, but the sorcerer got trapped in her own web and ended up getting captured by the PCs and giving them some plot-driving information, including the kasatha's name (Gideon Aven).

I wanted the PCs to feel totally outclassed in the encounter, because I knew that my players would never let one of their own go unless there was no other option (and I wanted to set up a strong rivalry for later, to make them really hate this guy). My gunslinger PC got a x4 crit on the kasatha, and his face was priceless when the bounty hunter just shrugged off the hit and disappeared.

My plan is to have the kasatha recur as a villain (and possibly an occasional ally) throughout the PCs' careers, coming back with more and more cybertech as the PCs level up. He'll probably replace his missing arm with a cyber arm for next time, as well as a new cybernetic eye to replace the one the gunslinger shot out.

That's interesting, and I like the idea of adding more cybernetics as it goes along, but I room ably won't do more than the one bounty hunter.
