How to Calculate the cost of a Dual Enchanted Shield

Rules Questions

Hello and thanks for reading :) Pls apologize mistakes, english is not my first Language.

My Gm currently gave us the opportunity to purchase Magic Items worth 25 000 GP for their Crafting Price. (this is in preparation for a huge mission we have to do)

Our fighter wanted to get a new Heavy Steel Shield (Medium size) enchanted with:

Animated

and

Arrow Catching

I have estimated a price of

9170 Gold.

However our always faithful PCGEN gives a price of

16170 Gold.

So i have the question now:

Did we miscalculate and how exactly is it done?

Thanks in advance. This is driving us nuts

+1 minimum before adding abilities, so that's actually a +1 animated arrow catching heavy steel shield, making it +4 equivalent.

Heavy steel shield 20gp

Masterwork 150gp

+1 on shield, animate shield +2 and arrow catcher +1 for a total of +4 cost (note yo have to have at least a +1 to add special abilities and all of the bonuses are added together to find final cost) 16000gp

total 16170

Edit: Cut that i got it now.Its about the "points"

So

+1 = 1000

Arrow Catcher= 1000

+2= 4000

Animated = 4000

All in all that would bring me to 10 000..I may sound stupid here but what am i missing?

You calculate them totally.

+1 Arrow Catching Animated = +4 Enhancement equivalent. Calculating enhancement costs on armor and shields is taking the bonus (4), square it (16), multiplying that by 1,000, equating to 16,000 enhancement costs.

Tack on masterwork costs (150 for shields), and base cost (20 gold), equals the 16,170 gold cost.

I will also ask that you be careful with your phrasing of "Dual Enchanted," as I originally thought this thread was about the cost of enchanting a Shield as both a piece of armor and a weapon. (A subject that a lot of people get confused on, and I'm surprised as to how silent Paizo is on such a matter.)

You have to add all the properties together, so, Animating is a +2, Arrow Catching is +1, and the +1 is +1, so, all together, it's a +4 weapon.

A +4 Heavy Shield is 16170

The price is based on the total enchantment bonus or equivalent. Here it is a +4 equivalent. Square that to get +4 * +4 *1000 = 16000. Then add the price for the shield and masterwork to get 16170.

Thanks you all! i got it now! i was so fixated on the price not the points.

maaaan my fighter gonna be annoyed :D

Have to reopen it because the first time i asked my Fighter only got the Arrow Catching Enchantment.

Now he tries to get the Animated on the same shield.

i calculated a price of 5000 GP for that:

+1 Enchantment so he gets +2 for 1000GP

Animated which equals +2 for 4000GP

Am i correct?

No, you sum all the values together and then find the price on the table. So if you had just a +1 animated shield that's equal to a +3, which on the table costs 9000.

Now with his current +1 arrow catching shield he should have paid 4000 for it, now adding 2 more with animated would make it a total of a +4 shield, which costs 16000, so he'd need to pay 12000gp to upgrade it.

which means that he has to pay the standard Cost of an enchantment if he wants another +1 Level enchantment?

1000gold for a +1 enchantment for example?

No, you pay for the total cost of the shield minus what you've already paid.

A +4 shield costs 16000 for the enchantments. A +2 shield costs 4000 for the enchantments. Since he wants to make his +2 shield (+1 arrow catching = +2) into a +4 shield (+1 animated arrow catching = +4) he has to pay 16000 - 4000 = 12000 gp.

If he wanted, instead, to make it a +2 arrow catching shield, it would cost 9000 (cost of a +3 shield) - 4000 = 5000gp.

The cost is going to get higher and higher the more you put on a single item. It will never go back down to 1000 unless you start over with a new shield.

that table isn't the price of the separate enhancements, it's the price of the entire item. So total all the +'s and the enhancement that cost +'s and add them together, then find that value in the table and that's how much the item will cost.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

or, to put it another way, 10 +1 enhancements are not 10 x 1000 gp.

It's a +10 Shield, 100,000 gp, limited to +5 Straight armor enhancements, minimum +1.

The only way you JUST add gold is if the enhancement does not have a + rating (like Elemental Resistance).
