Core Barbarian / Ranger multiclass

Advice

Dark Archive

Hello there! I was thinking of bringing a switch hitter dwarf ranger/barbarian into the mix for the Core Campaign. Here is what I have thus far.

I guess my question is, would this be viable? I was thinking of attempting to take both classes at a 50/50 rate, but would one be better as a dip? I certainly don't want to go as a single classed character due to flavor reasons, but... I am not sure what my level up options should be later down the road. What would you all suggest?

P.S. I'm not sure if this should have been in this forum or the advice forum. Sorry in advance.

I think you're more likely to get the attention that your build deserves if this thread gets moved to the Advice Forum.

This is a new Forum, and there aren't a lot of posters in it yet. Plus, the types that are posting here are PFS players and GMs, not advice gurus (although I'm sure there's a Venn Diagram somewhere overlapping the two).

For those reasons I'll flag your post to be moved.

No apologies needed.

I think this would work better as a dip of one class or the other. If you dip ranger 2, you have a bonus feat and tracking, but your barbarian levels will give you rage powers, more rage rounds, and other abilities sooner.

On the other hand, if you only take barbarian one, you will gain fast movement and a few rounds of rage ontop of a ranger with access to combat styles and spells only delayed by one level.

If you go 50/50, you delay class abilitys from both sides, meaning you end up only a little better than a warrior NPC class.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If you're looking to play a switch hitter, I would focus ranger levels choosing the archery combat style allowing you to take rapid shot and manyshot without needing to spend a feat on point blank shot or meet the Dex 17 requirement on manyshot.

So... barbarian 1, for the extra HP at 1st, rage and fast movement and then ranger the rest of the way, probably looking to take power attack, combat reflexes and quick draw early on and using a two-handed weapon.

If there was a rage power that you wanted, take a 2nd level of barbarian at some point (probably after 4th level) and pick up uncanny dodge at the same time, but keep in mind that you lose the advantage of the barbs improved hit dice due to the loss of favoured class bonus, and delay growth of your will save.

(This is the profile of the dwarf in question)

It does look like I might go two levels in barbarian... but that would delay my animal companion even further. At that point, is it even worth having the AC, when I could choose the other bond instead? I'm just afraid of the Animal Companion being far too weak as I would either be getting it at level 5 or 6.

Silver Crusade

The ranger animal companion is already quite weak, and putting it even 1 level behind I would rather take the hunting companion bond instead of the animal companion.

Saying that, if you can find a use for your companion outside of combat (probably a challenge in society play), then I'd probably still take the AC.
