My first 'favorited' post and my first post in two years of lurking, and however long it's been since I created an account.

Really liked that story and I think it'll come in useful in my current campaign.

Thank you (and yoink!).

Glad I could help!

Heart? What kind of power is Heart?

I just don't use published adventures because most of it seems too combat focused and I don't railroad.

Yeah, I don't think everyone should use them. That's just my personal experience.

I can't speak for anyone else's players, but mine actually really like having some rails to go back to if they get lost. And they enjoy "shopping" for APs by theme.

For example, I'm starting Reign of Winter next Thursday because one of the players (who doesn't normally have time) said she'd reserve a day out of her schedule for Baba Yaga.

I won't argue the combat-focused, though. It definitely took me a couple tries to get the pacing right.

Cheers!

Heart is the best power, Landon. The best.
(After all, when Critics and Gamers throw-down, it gives you a magic bazooka!)

I just realized that this made me look like I was saying I created those whole-cloth. I did not. The Red Plumes, Hillsfar, Tempus, and Father Gruff (the high priest of Tempus in Hillsfar), the Zhents, etc. are all part of the Forgotten Realms and, for the most part, what I wrote about (though not my wording) was entirely acquired from the text (albeit some by inference instead of direct information).

If you're curious about Hillsfar, the Red Plumes, Maalthiir (the ruler of Hillsfar in 1372 DR, Forgotten Realms time), Fr. Gruff, or other such, you can always PM me (I may or may not be helpful - sorry in advance, if I'm not!), check out the Forgotten Realms Wiki, or, even better, purchase the Campaign Setting book and the Mysteries of the Moonsea book. The latter is a great book, by the way, if not a perfect campaign-in-a-box (though it has some great ideas).

I'm heavily modifying the game we're in (Night Mages who rely on Night Stone for their magic instead of Red Wizards, for example - they're still super-specialists, though; goblins are really different here; etc.), so what I'm doing isn't exactly FR, but it still follows the general plot (well... "plot" is being a tad generous, even though it is quite well written) of the book.

Summoner. When I first heard about the summoner I was, "WAHOO!" Then I read it and was, "What the heck is this stupid eidolon thing? What does that have to do with summoning creatures to do your bidding? Ok, the summon monster lasts longer. Really that's the only thing they get for summoning?!?"
The master summoner was closer, but still had a lot of class power tied up in the stupid eidolon. I really hated it. It just didn't match the vision in my head for SUMMONER.
Now I think it is ok. It doesn't match my vision. But it doesn't slow down play or disrupt things as much as flooding the field with summoned creatures. So to me it is an acceptable compromise between ideal and playable.
Note: I don't find them nearly as broken as many people claim. Powerful? Yes. But not much more so than other full casters. I haven't seen them soloing adventures and marginalizing everyone else. So I don't dislike them for that reason.

Spontaneous casters. At first glance, I simply hated the concept. What? I can only learn 3 spells! How the heck can I survive with that?
But when the number of books started multiplying. I found it nearly impossible to keep up with knowing all the spells so I could prepare the perfect choice. Even worse with a book caster because then you have to work to get everything that is likely to be useful in your spell book. I also found my self constantly aggravated because there was always a better spell I should have prepared but guessed wrong, hadn't remembered it, or had bad info. And I have to go through that almost every in-game day.
But for a prepared caster; I can take my time learning, research, and getting advice for a few generally useful spells. It is just a whole lot less headache and irritation.

Pointbuy! While I'm not always thrilled to see yet another full caster with an 18 in their casting stat, I still find it a massive improvement over rolled stats.
This one too.

I agree, although lately I've started to even on my own characters put a 17 in my casting stat. So sure, it's not the awesome 20 it could be (after all, why not pick a race that lets you get a 20 in your casting stat?) but it's a 19 and at level 4 it'll even out to 20... and you aren't left with an annoying odd stat... plus your OTHER stats can be higher.

So like my Emberkin Aasimar Oracle (25pt buy) has

STR 12
DEX 14
CON 13 Don't so much care about the CON except she needs it 13 for Angelic Blood
INT 14
WIS 10
CHA 19

Not having the 18 lets me not have to dump anything, and the other stats are pretty nice too.
