Building a medium sized cavalier help pls

Advice

Sovereign Court

I've got a lot of questions regarding this, and i want to make a medium sized cavalier on a medium mount. How would i go about that in society? What mount would i get? I want to avoid large mounts for the simple fact they take up too much room Please help. I want to avoid the small characters because of the strength penalty, and well humans get extra feat.

there's a feat, undersized mount, you'll probably need that. Also you need something strong on 4 legs to have a chance of not being to encumbered. So like, wolf, boar, bear something like that.

When it's all said and done, a -2 STR from being small is not that big of a deal once you begin to add in the bonuses from items, spells, etc.

If your a druid, Carry Companion turns your mount into a tiny statue. Put the mount in your pocket until you need it or until you get in a fight.

Narrow Frame is also a good feat to have for the mount.

The Undersized Mount feat will allow you to ride Medium creatures, but the Cavalier's class feature lists specific animals allowed for Cavaliers of different sizes. In a home game the DM could make an exception, but that won't work in PFS. I guess you could take the Huntmaster archetype if it is PFS legal and start riding your dog at 4th level.

If you're just scared that you won't be able to fit a Large mount into dungeons please check out the Narrow Frame feat LibraryRPGamer suggested. It should let a Large mount fit into most places where a Medium PC would. Dungeon ceilings are also often pretty high. Getting your mount up and down stairs and vertical cliffs/shafts might be the real problem. A flying mount might be nice for that.

The feat Narrow Frame can help your mount avoiding to be squeezed in tight places. Nimble moves and Acrobatic steps are useful to help your Large mount avoid difficult terrain and charge without obstruction.

Undersized Mount is a feat that will solve many Mount build headaches. Bear riding dwarves are finally now a reality!

Sovereign Court

But what about the mount selection? what could is select as a medium sized human?

As written so far, undersized mount doesn't change the list you can select your mount from. So you'd need something that expands your list to pick something other than a horse or camel.

Silver Crusade

The cavalier animal choices were created before the feat Undersized Mount existed. As such, they don't provide any undersized mounts. You'll have to play a class other than cavalier.

Why are you so concerned about it being a medium mount? Mind you, I've met several characters who ride undersized mounts, and it works great. Is this a character concept thing or an optimization thing? If the latter, a Narrow Framed Large mount is a great option. It's a feat either way ...

Frankly is the main concern a medium PC or a medium mount? One of the beast rider cavalier archetypes can take larger mounts as long as they're suitable for riding. There comes that bear-riding dwarf again..

Why not just play a Hunter? They have a much better selection of mounts than a Cavalier.

Hunters can't get their level to damage, Hunters don't get the better charging, Hunters cast spells, Hunter has a small HP die, hunter doesn't get expert trainer, etc.

Hunters do more damage with their companion than a Cavalier, Hunters have self-buffs, Hunters can multiclass with Cavalier to get two animal companions and better charging, Hunters can make use of the Charge line of feats to reach damage equivalent their full BAB of attacks at level 5-7, Hunters always flank their target, Hunters have huge amounts of free money pouring out their but from free stat buffs...

Etc etc.

Oh, I am sorry, this wasn't a thread about why Hunters are so much better than Cavaliers at their job or even one about comparing the two. This was one about someone who wanted to ride a Medium Mount while being medium, and I proposed a solution since Cavaliers do not typically allow that and Hunters are an excellent choice for someone interested in riding a mount about.

Man I wonder why I made such a huge mistake and wasted my time listing all these irrelevant points about Hunters...
