I have seen this mentioned before, has GW outline what each year of the 5 year plan is or given an overview before?
Y1: Pre-Alpha
Y2: Alpha
Y3: Early Enrollment
Y4: Open Enrollment

I went from Dagedai to Brighthaven (23 out of 28 hexes) in 39 minutes at a full sprint with minor deviations to dodge large escalation groups (and the ability to withstand a number of angry encounters by outrunning my attackers using good armor, self-healing, and tokens), so my money would be on over 90 minutes to walk the width of the alpha map.

So, when do we have to worry about activating our subscriptions/three month packages in order to play?
We don't.
TLDR: They activate automatically by logging in. Do not log in to the game after Server Down Dec 31 unless you want to use one of your free months.- You can't login unless you have EE or Alpha.
- If you have either of those, you have one or more free months coming.
- They will be capturing logins to the game (not the world, the game)
- If you login to the game, that starts one month running, even if you don't create a character or do anything.

If you log in to the game, you've used a month of time from the package you bought.
You can create a character any time in the first month (not Explorers or OE'ers obviously) and get your xp backdated to when EE servers first came online, so you won't lose xp if you get delayed a couple weeks making a character in the first month.

From what I have seen:
July 2012 (Tech Demo) till July 2014 (Alpha End) Pre-Alpha (Making tools, to actually make Alpha, hiring staff, design mode, purchasing equipment and software, and creating the building blocks and architecture for the game)
July 2014 (Alpha Start) till December 2014 (Alpha End) Alpha (basically creating the foundation for Early Enrollment and the game in general)
January 2015 (EE Start) till June 2016 (Estimated EE Finished) Early Enrollment (Building on the foundation of the game, bringing it past MVP into full blown MMO, while creating content and features)
July 2016 (OE Start) till June 2017 (First Expansion?) Open Enrollment (I can only speculate what the last year of the 5 year plan will look like: Probably helping advertise, establishing the game, creating new content, having a very robust in game store, various new avenues to make money, and perhaps working towards the first major expansion opening the world beyond the NW River Kingdoms, perhaps even content in Numeria, Razmiran, or Ustalav)
I believe that covers exactly 5 years....

But how about the other add-on time packages?
I have a Pioneer package (4 months), and I understand that when I log in to EE, that 4 month time begins.
I also have 3 x 3 month packages and a 1 year package. I'm hoping that when my initial 4 months is up, I will have to actively select one of my other four packages.
It SHOULD NOT be that all of my time on my account is activated when I first log into EE.
I definitely want to save that One Year time for OE.

My account info says I have 25 x 1 month subs, and not the 4 month + 3x3 + 1x12 as I purchased them.
This is a bit of a concern because it makes me wonder how my time will be used and leaves the question as to why my packages were altered?

It states in the blog that in Month Two they expect to have account time management tools up. They also state if not, they will announce how to handle Month Two. Which implies until they have the tools up and running, they will likely continue using login records to determine months used.
I also bought extra time and they were always listed in units of months in my GW account. If it was me, and I wanted to play the first month and then freeze my account and the tools were not out, I would not login 30 days from now, and would also notify customer service to keep my account dormant. Unless the instructions they plan to post for Month Two say to do otherwise.

I believe they are listed in months of time so that they will be more versatile. They mentioned the "goblin balls" situation, being able to trade your months of time to others, as well as specifically activating as many as you want when you want.
I think the difference in purchasing the 3 months and 12 months was price point.

I believe the answer to your question can be found on the GW blog, Managing Your Game Time, Game Client, Characters and Packs.

That presumption is a bit hysterical, don't you think?
They said a long time ago that game time would be broken out into months and those would be used one at time, unless you sold them to someone else or used them in a different way.
Frankly, they've increased the value of our multi-month and year packages by breaking them into individual months, because now we can use them more flexibly. One toon for twelve months, or play for two months, then take a break, then come back in six months and play another couple, or 12 toons for 1 month or 2 toons for 3 and sell six months for $75.
Instead of a $150(or $100) block, you've now got 12 maximum value month packs.
