question about weapon and armor materials

Rules Questions

Ok was wondering what u would use to determine to find out what a weapon or armor was made out of.
Lets say the playerw find a cold iron longsword.
do the pc automatically know its made out of cold iron?
Does the pc make a dc 20 appraisal check?
Or does the pc make a dungeonering check?

No.
DC 20 appraise check will tell a PC what it's worth, but not actually why it's worth that.
DC 10 Knowledge (dungeoneering) will identify the metal.

As far as I know there isn't anything official for special materials identification can vary from places to places.

Usually in my campaign, craft (Weapons or armor or blacksmithing) in general can be used to identify some special materials. It would also depend on how common it is.

I mean without having knowledge or craft of any kind, its relatively easy to recognize an item made of mithral, because of the shiny silver and how light armor or weapon is for any adventurer.

But again, this is just what I use in my home game. Guessing you will find many variations or even make your own.

Some materials can be pretty obvious like a gold sword or a black dragon scale shield.

Personally, for simplicity's sake, I let the materials known unless its something special or bad for the PCs in which case I simply states it looks like X but somehow feels different.

Stuff like cold iron & alchemical silver are low cost materials that should be easy enough to identify.

Yeah i couldnt find anything official either specifically for that. I believe im gonna go with Chemlak and just basically have it the dc 20 and 10 checks for those skills since my players usually dont take those skills anyways.
i appreciate all the answers, tyvm

Adamantine and mithril weapons and shields should be easy enough to recognize. If it's a working item that's half the weight, it's mithril. If trying to sharpen your new sword doesn't seem to be working, then walk over to a nearby boulder and strike it. If it cuts through the stone like butter, it's adamantine.

Thats true, but at same time what determines that the pcs have that knowledge though when they first encounter said object? Its the same as a wizard or sorcerer watching someone cast fireball and the spell is on the spell list, its spellcheck that determinee if they reconize someone casting a spell that they themselves know and have cast before.

im not saying this to be demeaning at all and i hope that doesnt come across that way, its just i was wondering if there was a certain skill that would indentify the property without relying on gamers knowledge. Like someone who isnt familiar with the setting or game and come across a golem and see there new sword is doing better than everyone else, what skill or whatever would determine if they the player or pc would know "why" their sword was doing better than everyone elses.

Reason why i was asking is i usually just let the players know what the material was, but was wondering if there was a way thru game mechanics for the pcs to find out themselves.
