The Best Player Companions for PFS

Pathfinder Society

Dark Archive

Hey everybody, I just want to get your opinion on what your favorite player companion is that has most of the contents legal for play, and why. What's the cool archetype, spell, or item in there? I love the harrow handbook because of all the interesting archtypes or hexes in it.

IMO, it depends on what you want your AC to do. I have a small cat that does hardly any damage but is very dodgy and very, very distracting. I also have a Half-Orc with an Owlbear to be like twin tanks. And my ranged hunter has a small dog which just matches my character perfectly, and in a few more levels the dog will probably be as smart as some PC

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Seekers of Secrets

Everything in this book is legal for play with the following notes. Equipment: ioun stones use method 1 for resonance and never use method 2. Additionally, only normal ioun stones have resonance—inferior ioun stones never do. Advanced ioun stones are not legal for play. Prestige Class: Pathfinder Savants replace the item creation feat prerequisite with Spell Focus.

Its still LEGAL its just not REQUIRED anymore.

Adventurer's Armory has the spring-loaded wrist sheath as well as various nice alchemical items.

For alchemists, the Alchemy Manual is extremely nice.

PFS Field Guide has the very nice Lorewarden and Grenadier archetypes. Grenadiers are perfect for PFS ranged alchemists.

Animal Archive is near-mandatory if you have an AC, because it has the Flank and Exclusive tricks.

Dragon Empires Primer has the Quain Martial Artist and Wayang Spellhunter traits. Especially Spellhunter is just busted. It's also got the Void school, which is neat for mystic theurges and arcanists because its Reveal Weakness ability is based on caster level, not wizard level.

Seekers of Secrets has some very good Ioun Stones in it.

Don't forget Ultimate Equipment, as it has many many nice things.

Another newer favorite is the Inner Sea Gods book, as the feats and equipment in it are great for different builds. (I really want to fly in space...... Or at least be able to.)

Those two aren't player companions though :)

I forgot a few books for single things I use:
Andoran, spirit of liberty for liberating command (spell)
Pirates of the inner sea for freedom fighter (trait)
Qadira, gateway to the east for silversheen (special material)

I can't believe nobody's said Pathfinder Society Primer.

Pathfinder Society Primer for the background information and lore about the Pathfinder Society, for a better understanding of the organization your character is a part of and the story that you're participating in.

BUT, if you're one of those who scoff at that for being worthless (which I don't, and I'm kind of sad to know that there are some who scoff at that in a roleplaying game), there's also Kreighton's Perusal and Page-Bound Epiphany, a couple of nice spells. There are First Aid gloves, a very nice "emergency backup" expendable item. There are also a bunch of vanities purchasable with Prestige that you might find fun (one of my character has purchased two of the vanities from there).

Have you actually seen people scoff at setting info? Or have you simply seen people discuss a book without mentioning its setting info?

I can.

The information in it was outdated before the ink was dry thanks to the faction shifts.

Most of the magic items are too high priced to ever be useful in society play.

The sword/spell/scrolls thing never comes up in game and is kinda confusing.

Most of the vanities are kinda... meh. 8pp for a wizards tower that knocks alittle bit off of the spellbook?

The point of a wizard tower isn't to get a discount on stuff. It's so VCs can't show up at your bedside unannounced in the middle of the night with a mission. They have to at least get buzzed in.

I'm not sure what book you're talking about. The Pathfinder Society Field Guide has extensive information about the factions, and, yes, most of that is out of date now. However, that was published a few years ago, and the faction information in it was all up-to-date and correct for a couple of years after it was published.

The Pathfinder Society Primer has nothing about the factions in it. (I'm not sure they're even mentioned.)
