Mel Gibson’s ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Draws 10-Minute Standing Ovation in Venice
I was unfamiliar with Desmond Doss until I heard about this movie and watched the trailer. His story definitely impressed the hell out of me. And the movie looks to me to be possibly one of the best war movies in a good while.
And it's good to see Mel Gibson getting back in the game. He's always been far too talented an actor/director to sit on the sidelines.

I never heard of Doss before this, but the trailer looks fantastic. I'll definitely see this in the theater.

Kitten Given Second Chance After One in a Million Rescue From the Trash
Aww. My grandmother was at the dump one day, and saw movement from one of the plastic trash bags that had just been thrown onto the burn pile. (Yeah, they burned trash at the dump in Oklahoma.) She grabbed a stick and dragged the bag out of the pile, and it had six kittens in it. She put the bag in the back of her pickup and peeled out to catch up with the person she'd seen throwing the bag onto the pile before they left the dump, so that she could write down their license plate. Who knows if anything came of that (the town sheriff was her neighbor, 'though, so the local police definitely heard about it...).
She ended up keeping the kittens, since she had a big farm, and up to a dozen 'outdoor cats' that mostly ate birds and mice in the grain-barn and whatever, and took care of themselves. Fortunately, none of them were injured or burned, thanks to her quick reactions.

I'm still haunted by something I almost didn't do. When I volunteered at my local animal shelter certain mornings I was scheduled to come in early and walk the dogs. It was January and we actually had a good deal of snow (we get it in spurts of a day or two and then nothing). When I got there I saw there was a big bag of cat food, donation I guess, I'll get to it when I'm done. So I go and walk the dogs and clean up after them, takes about an hour, and get ready to leave.
But there's still that bag but I'm thinking f~&! it, they'll be someone here in a few hours and I want to go sleep. So I'm pulling out but stop the car cause I realize how pathetically lazy I'm being so I get out to go run the food in, would only take 20 seconds since it's at the back door.
So I pick it up, and inbetwen it and wall was a smushed cat carrier (the collapsible kind) with a heavily pregnant 1 year old cat staring back up at me.
I took her to our vet and ended up having to take care of her until she had her litter and until they were old enough to go back to the vet to get ready for adoptions. They were almost immediately adopted into happy homes.
If I had been my usual lazy self though... I still hate myself over what could have happened.
