So, the game I'm running is going well, but it feels like it could use something extra. I'm thinking that something is battle music. I've got a lot of tracks to use for this, but I'm thinking of cutting up, extending, and mixing some of them together to make custom tracks. I'm wondering, those of you who make your own battle music in this manner, what software do you use to manipulate the source files?

I use Audacity for editing sounds effects, speech, and music. It's open-source software suitable for professionally mastered sound.
While sounds effects and music are sometimes nice, I've found that a lot of players are bothered by background noise, especially music. I'm personally slightly hard of hearing, so any background music behind conversation is a huge hindrance to my enjoyment. Use sound, but be careful not to over-use it. Less is more.
I've had better results, in game, from specialized sound effects than with music. I've received positive feedback from players after using sound effects like echoing dripping water, roar of beats, clangor of battle, wind in the trees, clarion trumpets, and galloping horses.
