PoI Terminology: What about Landmark?

With the recent hiccups of the big map icon vanishing after a death I've started doing a lot of navigating-by-nature, using hex types and hex changes to keep track of where I am as well as the WoT towers which are in the centers of a hex. They're a major landmark I use to navigate with.

PoIs are going to be in the center of the hex to.

And that's what a "landmark" is, a dominant feature in a geographic area. Just like the docks, farm, hunting lodge or quarry will be the dominant feature in their hex.

Instead of the awkwardness of enunciating P-O-I and adding even more abbreviations to an MMO, we could be talking about outposts that are connected to the landmarks.

Commoner was just changed so it's a great time to update the term for landmarks too. What does the crowd forge, is it a thing?

I like it. Any time an acronym is replaced by a word, joining the game gets a little easier.

I think so. But then, I thought so that last time we had a "discussion" about this.

Ya, I thought "Holding" did pretty well in that thread.

What do Freeholders do at the Holdings?

Goblin Squad Member

Stead? Tula? Tun? Dwelling? .... Perhaps Holding is best, although to me it implies some kind of feodal relationship.

But frankly, almost any thing is better than Point of Interest.

I think there is an implied feudal relationship. Companies hold hexes/holdings, settlements don't. If the company is a sponsored company, then the holding can be attached to the sponsoring settlement. If the company isn't a sponsored company, or they choose not to attach it to a settlement, then it's an independent holding.

It depends on the holding. Freeholders are specialized gatherers and refiners. While they might not yet be PF canon, I'd offer that they may have similarities with miners in medieval Europe. (As I recall:) Miners were generally protected by the local kings or other high nobility, and were sometimes not subject to the local authority (baron). Miners were 'free', but unlike free farmers (yeomen), they didn't owe military service. They were frankly too valuable to the high nobles.

I have a recollection that POIs can not be operated without a settlement's stewardship. I suspect it's supposed to make it hard for a small group to do whatever they want.

Then holding is appropiate! I withdraw any objections and fall back into the silent mob.

Pre 1660 (Statute of Tenures) under feudal land title the term freehold basically referred to any title in real property (land) that could be passed on in a will rather than the various other tenures that could be reallocated by the lord, local bishop or king on a whim when the current tenant died.

I believe the term holding was not particularly feudal, the correct feudal term would be seisin as in "seised of an esate in fee simple". To be seised implied both a legal right and to be in possession.

However for the purposes of PFO "holding" seems fine and works well enough.

It would be nice if the future info blurb on toons automatically added titles as "Holder of <POI>" and "<Leader> of <Settlement>" where as Leader could be substituted depending on Settlement Size/Leaders Whims/Settlement type/citizens vote.
