Question about Masterwork Tools

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

A question came up in my last organized play game about the second section of text on Masterwork Tools.

"Recharge this card to defeat a barrier whose highest difficulty to defeat is 14 or lower"

Is this limited to barriers you encounter, or any barrier encountered in the game? Can I use on another character's barrier if they are at my location? Can I use it on any barrier a character encounters at any location?

Grand Lodge

In order to defeat a bane, you have to be the one encountering it. So, unfortunately you can't use the tools on someone else's encounter with a barrier.

Grand Lodge

Also note that second section only applies to barriers that have a Check to Defeat with a number. Some barriers say "See Below" (and summon other things to encounter) which cannot be defeated using the Masterwork Tools.

The other thing worth noting is how masterwork tools quickly lose their luster against veteran barriers. After a couple APs, they stop working on large chests and such.

For reference (Similar text appears in the RotR Ruelbook as well):

S&S Rulebook p29 Emphasis mine. wrote:
No One Else Can Take Your Turn for You. Whenever you encounter a card or make a check, you—and only you—must resolve it. No other character can evade it, defeat it, acquire it, close it, decide what to do with it, or fail at doing any of those things. If Seltyiel encounters a monster, Merisiel can’t evade it for him. If Alahazra encounters a Zombie, Valeros can’t attempt the check to defeat it. If Lini encounters a Large Chest, Merisiel cannot use Thieves’ Tools against it. If Lirianne defeats a henchman at the Sea Fort, Valeros can’t banish an armor to close the location. If the game tells you to do something, you have to do it.

But until then they are very sweet for a character like Alahazra with little chance otherwise to get through most barriers. And it's fun making up a story how you used your Masterwork Tools to avoid Swabbing the Decks or whatever ...

The tools just include a magical mop.

Yeah, they're great for a long time! Though seemingly a shorter "long time" in S&S than RoRL, Jirelle was definitely regretting subbing them out in her deck when the Hurricane Winds loomed on the horizon.

Not having played Merisiel (secret best character) in S&S yet, I've found a new appreciation for Blessings of Abadar and Find Traps, especially since comparatively fewer barriers can be sleepwalked through via a Disable skill pumped up by Dexterity skill feats.

Now I'm confused. As I understand it, the wording of the card dictates whose checks it can be used on. For example:

Monkey wrote:
Discard this card to succeed at your check to acquire an item or a weapon.
Mogmurch wrote:
Recharge this card to add 2d6 and the Fire trait to any check.
Masterwork Tools wrote:
Recharge this card to defeat a barrier whose highest difficulty to defeat is 14 or lower.

Bolding mine. So which category does Masterwork Tools fall into? Does "a" barrier refer to "any" barrier or "your" barrier?

ETA: Reading the section of the rules Hawkmoon posted seems to make it clear that Masterwork Tools falls into the latter category; I hope future printings of cards will endeavor to remove wording ambiguity.

"a" almost always means "any" (most of the errata for "a" says it means "any" and not "your"). But the S&S version of MWT doesn't actually use "any".

Sovereign Court

Basically, unless it specifies, it can be played on anyone anywhere.

However, remember that no one can defeat your encounters, evade them, fail them, etc. So Masterwork Tools is only for your barriers. It doesn't specify on the card because it is a general rule that you can't make those actions for other players.

Yeah, what Andrew said. And in the rulebook, it's actually called out as one of the examples; it's not because of "any" versus "your", but because of the rule that no one else can finish your encounter except you.

This is, by the way, why Levitate and Teleport specifies "willing character(s)".

(p.29: ...If Lini encounters a Large Chest, Merisiel cannot use Thieves’ Tools against it.)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

In Wrath, cards like this would say "Recharge this card to defeat a barrier you encounter whose highest difficulty to defeat is 14 or lower."

Aha! Another tiny bit of info leaks out about the next Adventure Path.
