The soccer ball droid bothered me far more than the new lightsaber design.

I'm hoping that what we saw in the trailer is all we see of it in the entire movie. That thing needs to be the target on a blaster firing range.

Let a new set of nerdrage rants begin!

In a world where antigrav has been perfected, I have no issue with the soccer ball droid with the exception that it looks kinda stupid. My assumption is that there's gyro's and magnets and such inside the soccerball.

I actually liked the look of the droid myself.

yes, but is it meant to be kicked?

Totally agree with OP. Stupidest thing I've seen in a long time. Put a box on a soccer ball and call it a droid.

Maybe we can at least get a shot of it falling down the stairs?

Is it really any stupider than the trash can on legs with roller skates that is R2D2?

Yes. How is the head held on? If there is a slot all the way around the soccer ball so the head can stay on top, then how does it not roll to the left or right and topple over?

Dumbest thing I've seen in a long time.

I think that was the OP's point.

Presumably, the head is not attached to the ball.

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, they were seemingly doing some other astonishing things with magnetism and Jedi weaponry.

What everyone except Americans and Canadians call "football", because for Americans and Canadians, "football" is sport where the ball needs to be picked-up, thrown and carried in one's arms...

so, soccer ball

I kind of like that droid.

It's a stupid design for sure, but it fits in a universe full of stupidly design droids. I like it.

It's often referred to as soccer here in Australia as well, much as it irritates me.

The droid is Kira's (Daisy Ridley) droid so expect to see it in quite a few scenes.

Here it is in concept art in a key scene inside the remains of an AT AT.

The R series droid in the trailer is actually in homage and based on 1976 Ralph McQuarrie concept art. One could argue Ralph McQuarrie is The Master behind conceptual art. Let's give credit where credit is due.

Rant terminated.

I still petition it starts to be called handegg. Makes much more sense to me.

Yeah, I also kind of like the roll droid.

I honestly don't get why people hate it so much.

The term Soccer originated at Oxford in the 1880's as a shortened form of "Association" Football, as opposed to the various other forms of football (like Rugby Football, later there's American Football, Australian Football, Gaelic Football, etc). For the most part, the most popular form of football in a given locale is called football, while other versions are typically called something else.

The football droid was adorable!

Keeps my beer in that droid do I.

I've been trying to persuade people to call American football "handegg" for some time now. It's definitely a more accurate description.

I've seen it called "Gridiron" in some places.

That droid is terribad. Now I know why droids arent allowed in cantinas. That dumb thing would be bouncing around spilling drinks the whole time.

It's probably the obligatory "cute and funny thing for the kids" that every Star Wars movie has ever had. R2D2, Jawas, Ewoks, Jar Jar, etc.

Jawas cute? Who was it that called them filthy/vile creatures? C-3PO? Bigotry droid?

Dumb soccerball droid is dumb.

"Soccer" is dumb. Football is apt.

Jawas not cute. Jawas are legend. Legend because have awesome Sandcrawler vehicle which also legend.

Ewoks not cute. Ewoks are legend. Except baby Ewok is beautiful, and sad Ewok crying when friend die in Return of Jedi is feelings. Or Caravan of Courage. Or Forest Moon of Endor. Or E-e-e-e-e-e-ewoks. That Caravan not exist. Forest Moon have legendary hang gliding, so legend. E-e-e-e-e-e-ewoks must be cute because is cartoonily.

Jar-Jar not exist.

Thread fixed.

Smells like a probe droid disguised as harmless.

Princess leia: "aww! can we keep him?"
10 parsecs later: chutchutchutwheeeee! "grooowll!" thew! Thew!
Han solo: "into the escape pod! the droid just disected chewwie!"

The droid is fine... at this tech level you can have them look and move in any way the builder feels looks cool.

Hey, a soccer ball droid was my companion in Fallout New Vegas, so I have no problem with one in Star Wars.

It's an obviously real-world thing stuck into a fantasy/sci-fi world with no attachment to the real world.

While one could try and argue this with some general thing like 'clothes', it doesn't apply here, as the object is an extremely specific one--a specific type of ball used for a specific type of game on a specific world that doesn't exist in the medium in which it's displayed. Unless they recently retconned that soccer/"football" is a sport in the Star Wars galaxy, it's just a glaring oddity that's hard to ignore, especially if it's to be a main character.

Now, while other real-world objects have snuck in there (various guns, usually kit-bashed to make Blasters, although sometimes left alone), these are more background objects and not major characters or essential to them.

And if that wasn't enough, it's not even really consistent with the universe. Star Wars very rarely uses obvious 'wheels' for anything. Most non-primitive vehicles use hover technology (even Luke's beat-up old speeder that looks like it belonged on a used-car lot). Most primitive vehicles use either animals or treads, and the few that use obvious wheels aren't self-propelled vehicles as often as they are carts or wagons pulled by an animal of some sort. The only time wheels or rolling spheres are used is when they are concealed (R2-D2's feet, for instance).

Finally, it's downright impractical and... dumb. Kick over R2, he can extend a tool and get back up. Every other method of transporation will work better (hover, legs, etc). Kick SoccerDroid and it'll either go flying or its method of movement will, leaving it helpless in any case. What happens when it hits stairs? I was a little grumpy when R2 extended rockets, but it makes sense if he's going to be repairing ship hulls from the outside (most of my annoyance comes from never having seen that it the original trilogy).

Umm... different cultures across the world have been playing various forms of soccer throughout the history of humankind. It's not really much of a stretch to imagine that humans and/or other bipedal, sentient creatures throughout the galaxy developed the same/similar sport.

And they've very much used spherical objects in Star Wars canon. There are the spherical laser drones that Luke trains with in A New Hope; the war droids in The Phantom Menace transform into spheres as their main transportation mode.

I'm not certain if that was a droid or not.

It could be that a droid lost it's dome and was being rolled along on a ball or something...

The films are full of droid jokes to a degree.

Than again, it could be a soccer ball droid.

It doesn't take Dalek-level genius to figure out how to navigate stairs ;) especially when the little droid demonstrates in the teaser how it already has repulsorlift tech.

Yep, high tech stuff in Star Wars never gets around by rolling. Especially droids!

I just watched the "Force Awakens, Trailer 2" 3-4 times in a row. The silliness (silliness in the way of trying to be cute. Yes, I saw the video above showing that the technology actually works) of the soccer ball droid was completely drowned out by the deafening awesomeness of everything else.

Perhaps he will only reach an ewok-level or irritation, instead of dragging the film down into full-on Jar-Jar-ism.

I expect it will probably be no more than Artoo or Threepio levels of silliness.

Could be wrong, but I'm hopeful.

My favorite moment in the old Star wars EU, the Ewok "hawk bat" who inspires Zingi to create a real one.
