The eidolon is stronger than an animal companion, but the druid himself is stronger than the summoner himself.
Summoner gets haste 1 level sooner than the wizard and only has 1 or 2 possible a day. To me, not that big a deal. A lot of groups are buying a scroll of it by then anyhow.

Superior summons can definitely be a problem. My sorcerer has it but only uses it if every at the table (GM and all the players) asks me to do so. Not to long ago, at the tables request, I flooded the field with my army. I had something like 20 small earth elementals bull rushing people off the castle walls and towers then getting in the way so the army couldn't effectively gang up on us.

I just recently found out that it seems to work pretty well in PbP, since I have pretty much as long as I want to take my turn anyhow. I have 6 lantern archons each firing 2 rays. It is one post with 12+ lines that pretty clearly show what is happening. Doesn't really slow things down at all.

I'm actually considering starting a new PC as a summoner (or druid that summons) and only using it for PbP. That way I can really let myself go summoning creatures without anyone needing to wait on me and my long action turn.
Undone wrote:David Bowles wrote: Druid before summoner.
