Good Omen Spell with Subsequent Checks from Locations

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Sovereign Court

The Good Omen Spell in the Pathfinder Card Game is designed to aide with closing of a location. In one instance on a location that we encountered, the location said that in order to close you summon and encounter a barrier.

I can see this both ways, but it would be nice to see what the community thinks on it. Technically it is a check being made. And it is for closing a location. But it is not in a standard sense the normal, check to close a location.

Should Good Omen be allowed in this circumstance?

I would say it should not be allowed. A check to close is a check that directly results in the location being closed. If you must defeat a bane to close the location, the check to defeat is not technically a check to close...it is a check to defeat. The bane being defeated is what causes the location to close, but you are not DIRECTLY closing the location with that check. You could not use the blessing that adds two dice to a check to close a location in this circumstance, and you can not use Good Omen in this circumstance for the same reason.

Exactly this question came up in our Organized Play scenario tonight. The table was split on the answer. I was in the "It's not a closing check, so Good Omen doesn't apply" camp.

I think this is indicated by the RotR FAQ ruling on the Blessing of Gozreh (see here). Blessing of Gozreh adds two dice to a check to close a location, but the FAQ says this can't be used to add two dice to the combat check to defeat a monster you need to defeat to close a location. The same logic applies here.

I imagine it's like Blessing of Gozreh: it only works on a check to close a location (i.e. a check listed on the card), not any checks from a barrier or monster summoned by the card.

Unless you are making a check that is listed on the location (for example, "Succeed at a Strength 8 check"), it is already been confirmed that it is not a check to close a location. Your check doesn't close the location, it defeats the monster. Defeating the monster is what closes it, not the check. As Mechalibur said, it is the same as Blessing of Gozreh (2 dice to close a location)

Exactly the same as when you have a barrier and play Blessing of Abadar

If there is a check to defeat value written on the barrier, then you get two bonus dice for that check. But if the barrier says to summon something and defeat it in order to defeat the barrier, then you only get one bonus die for that check against the summoned card.
This has been many times clarified.
