Adapting Pathfinder's monsters to D&D 5?

4th Edition

Hi guys, I'm a Big fan of Golarion, but I choose to drop the Pathfinder rules in favor of D&D 5, because it's easier and with more roleplay, less subrules, etc...

But I'll still play un Golarion of course! So I'm looking for a quick way to adapt Pathfinder's monsters, does someone have a magick PDF or some good advices :)?

According to a Mike Mearles AMA over on reddit, they are working on making pdfs of conversion guidelines for converting older edition stuff to 5th edition. I would assume that it would be rather easy to use the 3rd edition conversion guidelines for Pathfinder.

Would have to agree with Adjule.

Additionally, for one-for-one cases, such as say a goblin or a skeleton where both games have stat blocks you just use the 5E stat blocks, although an encounter may require some adjustment in terms of number of creatures or the like.

For other monsters, I might do something along the lines of:
- keep the hit dice and assume that general power level stays the same
- use the ability scores, although for creatures above 20-25 you bring down the ability score to the 5E max
- if a PF monster is trained in a skill, assume for 5E they can use their proficiency bonus when performing an activity involving that skill

Beyond those guidelines, I'd probably wing a lot of it. Convert one or two of the monster's signature abilities to get the right feel. If they have the ability to cast spells/use spell-like or supernatural abilities, replace with the 5E flavor of the spell or something close. Use 5E weapons in place of the PF weapons. Etc.

Apart from what's been said, another idea is to look at a comparable monster that HAS been converted and see what kind of AC/HD/attacks/damage/specials it has in the conversion, and that should give you some idea of your target.

I made this set of conversion documents for Pathfinder (and others) to 5E. They're a little outdated now, but hopefully they can help (along with the other advice above).

Alrigth thanks guys I'll be waiting for an "official" conversion, in the meantime your advices and guid will be enough, doesn't seem to complicated.

I'll be waiting with you. I have all the Pathfinder Bestiaries and will jump on the official 3.5 conversion guide when it comes out.

I created a online conversion tool to convert from 3.5/pathfinder to D&D 5 monster stats. Hope it helps:

DMG pg 274 lets you eyeball what your PF monster should have in terms of AC, hps, dmg, DCs, etc. Make those changes, tweak any special abilities as you see fit, and keep an eye on stats (Str, Dex, etc) and you're all set. It takes me a couple of hours to convert an entire issue of Pathfinder AP to 5E.
