I'd like to submit Crux, human arcanist. He was in a game of CoCT game that died. I can easily level him if chosen.
Background: Crux was born to a life of wealth. He had a talent for magic but his father wanted him to become a soldier. So Crux ran away from home. He had dreams of impressing a great wizard and becoming his apprentice. Eventually becoming a powerful wizard in his own right. Unfortunately, he was found by Gaedren Lamm before that could happen. Gaedren recognized the potential in Crux and tried to force a life of crime upon him. However, Crux was not to be swayed and eventually, Lamm decided the boy with so much potential had to be removed. Crux was beaten and left for dead in the gutters where, as fortune would have it, he was found by a up and coming wizard. The wizard nursed him back to health and took him on as his apprentice. His apprenticeship is now done and Crux has returned to finish his business with Lamm and make amends with his father.
Appearance: Crux is rather tall and thin with a piercing stare. He keeps himself covered as much as possible in an effort to hide the wounds that remain on his face and body from Lamm's depredations. He has a noticeable limp from that last beating as well (though it does not hamper his movement).
Note: At this point I can say nothing about the characters meshing, but I can say that I can commit to posting several times a week. Often more than once a day. If chosen, I will be committed to the game.

I am very interested in this, and am thinking of a couple of different characters I could work up. Was curious if anybody had a preference on which I should develop further. I'd be wiling to accept criticism as well, since all of my experience to date has been with wizards, so I am new to melee types.
This option would be a dwarven Stonelord paladin with a 1-level dip into unbreakable fighter. Planned on giving him a pair of Boots of the Earth, Fast Healer feat, antagonize, full plate armor and a reach weapon. Starts off with DR2/adamantine and fast healing 2 when planted, idea is to plant in a bottleneck, draw baddies to me with antagonize, and hit them as they come in.
This option would be a Sacred Huntsmaster inquisitor with an Ape companion who would basically be a bodyguard as I did my glass cannon thing. Preferred would be able to train the ape to use a reach weapon. Some interesting roleplay opportunities, as the character basically is terrified of combat, and that's why he has trained up a bodyguard companion.
Karl Marsh |
Norv and company,
As a player I have never abandoned a game. I like long running games. Fair disclosure though, I might have a chance to go to Africa in June for 10-12 days and I have no idea if there will be internet there.
Karl Marsh is a rogue/ranger hybrid, he is a swordsman. He is an older warrior a very grim character with a very detailed back story that effects his reactions and interactions in the game. His prized possessions are his matched sword and main gauche. I use the rogue abilities and talents to help make him more deadly with those. He is Dex based, not the most efficient build, but that is to help create in game my mental picture of him.
I was thinking of adding a level of barbarian to him to depict an older warrior who taps into the heart of his younger warrior self during spurts of activity, the fatigue would be his older body slowing him down. The concept is an older warrior who is rusty after coming out of retirement.
I am open to suggestions on that though. Otherwise I think I would make him 3 levels ranger 2 levels rogue for entry into the game.
He plays the violin, has the manners of a noble, but there is a sad bitterness about him at times.
My favorite games ran about a year and a half, one ran two years. It really bums me out when games start like a house of fire then die out. I have joined a few games like that. I am hoping to step into something long lasting. I like to post at least once a day.
Do you guys have any questions for me?

Weird, this is the second time in two days that I've seen someone with a main gauche, when no such weapon exists in Pathfinder.

It's also known as a short sword. ;)
Lantressa Darksong |
Hi all, I'm Lantressa, the groups maestro bloodline sorceress and harlot working at Madame Halvara's at Eel's End. My focus is as a combination caster/face character with primarily enchantment magic and some evocation.
I agree with Korriban that, other than a front line fighter, a must have, we could certainly use additional range. Our vanished paladin was actually a reach build I believe, kinda nice to have. Still, I look forward to gaming with whoever is chosen.
DeathQuaker RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8 |
Very late to this, but I've got a character who was in the start of not one but two CoCT games that died with the departure of the GM. We never finished the first book in either case, I believe.
It would be awesome to play her again and finish out her story. Here she is: Callie Cobalt
That said, she is neither ranged nor a true front liner -- she's an arcane duelist so she is meant to handle melee competently, but is certainly not a tank.
I'd rather have something more suitable for your party, but she's the one with the background already set up for the campaign. Is she worth applying with? Or should I just not bother (or come up with another character)? I'd need to level her to 5th.
ETA: BTW, closest thing to main gauche in Pathfinder is the swordbreaker dagger.
DeathQuaker RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8 |
Oh, I should also add in the interests of disclosure: I edited what I think was chapter 3 of the revised version of the hardcover of CoCT coming out. (Whatever chapter is where they go out to meet with the
Shoanti
)
So I know the plot of that particular chapter pretty well. I can guarantee I would do my best not to let that interfere with any character I'd play, but I still have foreknowledge.
I will also reiterate I know I'm late to this and you may not want yet another application at this point. I'm trying not to waste your time--but also not my own if it's not worth leveling the character.

Edgerson, your character build looks fine. However, I have noticed that the background is for Hell's Rebels rather than Curse of the Crimson Throne.
Gyro, your build looks great!
Crux, your build looks fine!
DeathQuaker, Callie's build seems to be fine. I think that she would be okay to enter into this game. Also, you were an editor for the revised version of CotCT? That is so cool! I have been looking froward to that for a while now!
Riceak, your background looks good!

Callie Cobalt |
Awesome. This is DeathQuaker with Callie, leveled up with stats adjusted to campaign's requirements etc.
Her gear I might make some final tweaks to. While I went through with purchasing via WBL (10,500 gp) I based it what she had in the prior game at 3rd level and largely upgraded key equipment, hoping it would be a slightly more organic collection of stuff (but also less optimized... for better or worse). I left on the pseudodragon's mark (and did not count it against my WBL) she earned in the prior campaign but I'm not sure if she would have actually gotten it. I have no issue removing it if need be.
The Norv |
Dwilhelmi--for my money (though others may disagree) I'd be curious to see more about your inquisitor. :)
(We had a dwarf stonelord for a brief period in there, actually, so another would feel...odd.)
Callie, keeping the pseudodragon mark is fine--we'll just have to figure out how she got it in this version (if you're selected).
ALL: We've had some great submissions so far, and all look good on a cursory check of their mechanics. I will say, though (and I probably should've said it before) that some people have very scanty or nonexistent (as far as I can find) backstories. Please put them, or a link to them, on your profile! PBP is a text-based medium, and they're a really important chance for us to (A) understand who your character is, and (B) get a handle on your writing skills. So don't sit on any great stories you have in you; they'll only make you likelier to be selected!

I'll work him up more then. Just about have him mechanically complete, working on back story now. Since you guys have already killed Lamm at this point, should I still take one of those traits related to him?
dwilhelmi |
OK, I have my inquisitor written up. I will create an alias for him if selected.
As of yet I have not bought any arrows, because I wanted to make sure of any rules of buying (I want to buy 50 durable arrows, and 10 each of durable silver, durable cold iron, and durable adamantine arrows, but wasn't sure if I could buy only 10 of each and what the total cost would be).
I gave my ape +1 int for the ability increase, and then had him take the martial weapon proficiency guisarme. Are you OK with this? From what I can tell, this is RAW-legal, but some GMs don't like it. I wanted him to be able to wield a reach weapon with the trip ability, as having a huge threatening area is kind of his thing.
I also gave him light armor proficiency and bought him a large-sized chain shirt. Is this correct, or do I need to buy special armor of some sort?
None of my character choices are set in stone, I'm OK with tweaking things to better mesh with the group. Just let me know.

Adran looks pensive when asked about his background. Where to begin? Everything in my life has revolved around Lamm, might as well start there... He takes a deep breath, and begins to tell his story.
"For all practical purposes, my only parent was a man named Gaedren Lamm. I had been under Lamm's thumb for as long as I could remember when I was a child. It wasn't pretty. Life under Lamm was difficult, as for all practical purposes I was his slave. Lamm was cruel, petty, vindictive, and had a need to maintain absolute control. I often wondered why I was stuck with this life, and what it would have been like to know my parents, or at least to know who they were."
"One day, while on a job for Lamm, I found a holy symbol that was so intriguing. It was relatively simple a bow and arrow, but for all its simplicity it had an elegant beauty to it that captivated me. To have a bow and arrow like that would be such a release! To hunt, to defend myself, to focus on something else other than the life I led, such a thing would be wonderful. I had to know more - so I snuck out to find the church it came from. It was a stupid move, I knew that even then, but I couldn't help himself. The service was beautiful. It was everything I had hoped for. I kept that holy symbol, as a symbol of the life I could have had, the kind of life that I could some day have again. It gave me something beyond old man Lamm. That made it all the worse when he found out about it."
"Lamm was furious. How could he not be? To give worship to a god meant that I was not giving my all to Lamm. It meant there was something on a level above him. It could not be born. He took away the holy symbol, and broke it right there in front of me! On seeing him do that, I lost it, and tried to fight back. It was a foolish move. I've never been beaten that bad before or since in my life. He almost killed me, the bastard."
"It turns out, though, that that beating was my salvation. Lamm made a mistake; he thought I was far too gone to escape, so he didn't watch me as closely as normal. Somehow, I was able to move through all that pain. Old Deadeye himself must have been with me. I ran, and I never looked back. I sought shelter at the same church I had attended, and they took me in. They became my new family."
"As I grew, archery became everything I hoped it would be. It was a great comfort to me, and practicing became a form of meditation. I practiced insane amounts, seeking communion with Erastil through perfection with the bow. Recently, I felt Erastil calling me to action, to go find Lamm and make sure he received what he deserved. But I didn't go. I thought I wasn't ready, that I needed more training, but truth be told, I was simply afraid. For all my training, I had never actually seen battle. The thought of actually fighting someone, and particularly of being hurt again like I was on the day Lamm beat me, was too much to bear. So I didn't go. I kept on training longer and harder, and used that as an excuse to avoid combat."
"Then I heard the news. Lamm had been killed. Some other group had done what I was supposed to do. I had failed Erastil. He wasn't done with me yet, though. I know that he still wanted me to go out, to become a force for him. I was still afraid, though. I think he knew it too. That's why he sent me Tiravara here. He is my bodyguard. He protects me, keeps anyone else from reaching me to beat me like Lamm did. Having him around gives me the courage to go out into the field."
"Lamm may be dead, but those who brought him to justice are still out there, still doing good things. I must find them. That is my new goal - find those who finished Lamm off, and give my services to them. I don't know who they are yet or what they are doing, but I feel that in my soul; that is my calling now."

Hi all! Thanks for all the great submissions. We're going to be reviewing them over the next couple of days, and hopefully we'll have a response for you guys by Wednesday evening (that's what I'm shooting for)!
@dwilhelmi: Buying 10 arrows of those kinds are fine; let me ruminate on the ape options...
The Norv |
All right, everybody! The dust has settled and, although it was a very difficult call, we have decided to take on Riceak Swordhand and Callie Cobalt! The two of you can go ahead over to our Discussion thread to check in.
To everyone else: there were a ton of really great, interesting, and well thought out characters in this lineup, and picking just two to join us was very difficult (which is one reason it took a little while). Please know that we really enjoyed reading all of your submissions, and that we'll definitely reach out to you again if we need more players!
