Characters of class decks: generic use for any adventure path?

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

... Class deck characters are usuable for rotr, ss, wotr, etc?
They dont have specific SS-plunder abilities?

Correct. They are intended for use with any adventure path.

That also means that the characters included with the adventure path are specially tuned to that path... Right?

The manual says that it is not efficient using SS characters with RotR due to the missing plunder stuff in Rotr...

Grand Lodge

That is the intention that the characters that come with the set are more tuned for that set. But they (the developers) didn't want that to stop people from trying them with another set.

If you look at the RotR charcters, they seem to be more general in terms of powers. Some of the S&S characters have very S&S specific powers that deal with ships, but some of them also appear more general as well. But definitely the ones that come as part of an adventure path are potentially going to be tuned to that adventure path.

It's funny that this post came up today. I was thinking about this last night. I have three characters in my class deck just sort of sitting there...almost waiting for Arabundi to die...jerks. Anyway, I was building two decks to run through SS campaign last night and I was thinking about using Wrathack, but I wasn't sure how well she would blend. Taking a second look at her roles she appears to be very generic. Might have to give it a shot.

I guess I should reword that...I wasn't sure how well she would blend with a generic adventure path, more like RotRL or WotR in the future. Of course she'd mesh with SS, as should all of the class deck characters.

Sovereign Court

All of the characters from the adventure decks have one role that is specifically geared towards that campaign, and a "utility" role that would be effective to an extent in all paths.

The class deck characters are built for both roles to play nice with just about any path, so that they don't have to keep remaking the same characters every season.

Yeah. I was going to say the same thing, but I'd say that isn't necessarily universally true. RotR Valeros for example, it seems both roles would probably function fine in any adventure path. But it does seem that, at most, only 1 role is every really adventure path specific.

Sovereign Court

I'm sure there will be some exceptions to the rule, I just remember Mike (or Vic?) saying a while back that each AP character had one focused role for that path, and a utility. Some will definitely work both in anything, but for the most part they all have one that works best, or maybe even only, in the one they came with.

I attempted a bit to figure out which role for each character would be the "specialized for the adventure path" role. I'd say anything in S&S that reduces structural damage would be a sign (though that makes Jirelle entirely specialized). I was thinking the aquatic trait might as well, but I think a few of the class deck characters have powers relating to the aquatic trait too. And there are banes in RotR that have the aquatic trait.

Vic or Mike somewhere said that structural damage could in the future refer to more objects than just ships (fortification, caravan, etc.) So Jirelle could work well in a future Adventure Path with something like that. Swashbuckler = Engineer?

I think her power says "your ship" though. So only other sets that have ships will find a use for her power.

Not that I'm complaining about her. My wife is playing her and she is great.

I dont mind, but the class deck characters should be generic.

Jirelle isn't a class deck character.

I am currently playing a 4-5 player game with mixed characters from both boxes.

We are playing ROTR. It is correct that this poses a lot of problems, but I am also stubborn, and I like a challenge, and I don't like telling players they can't play what their heart desires, so this is my clumsy workaround:

The two S&S players in my ROTR campaign are allowed to choose to draw from either the S&S or ROTR box when drawing cards. The party has an S&S Lini and Lirianne, and obviously Lirianne is going to want those gunpowder weapons. I gave the player a caveat that he would have problems finding cards that satisfied the pirate\gun stuff, but he really, really wanted to play a gunslinger, so I worked around it.

Honestly, he's turned out to be one of the most important badass characters in the party, so anything is possible. Whatever makes people happy.
