Hi there! New to PFS and all that.

Pathfinder Society

Hi everyone!

I was just trying to get into giving this PFS thing a go.

Just in the process of making a few registered characters. You know, emergency back up characters should any of them snuff it, and all that.

Not having done this before, I don't know if the characters I made would get the PFS seal of approval or not.

Can anyone enlighten me on if/when some PFS sage tells you "yae" or "nay" to the character you've registered?

Thanks!

Nope. You have to check the legality yourself.

If you register the character or post them here i can give them a quick lookover.

As long as you're following the guidelines in the Guide to Organized Play you should be fine.

You can also show your character off to your first GM.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Also a good idea to double check the additional resources page to see if any content you intend to use is PFS legal.

Welcome Xunal!

GMs are OK to check a character's legality at the beginning of every scenario. As BNW said you should check everything yourself and the first place to do that is the Guide (Nefreet linked above). Two traps I see new folks fall into involve non-core books. Non-core books need to be checked against the Additional Resources page for that particular book (not everything in every book is legal in organized play). The second is that you need to own the book to user it (more details in the guide though).

Again, welcome :)

EDIT: ninja'd

Okay, thanks for the welcome and information, everyone.

I plan to have one or two on hand if/when I can get into a PFS organized session, just in case one's kind of out to lunch, rule-wise. I don't want to fill a screen or six here with the ones I've stitched together so far.

I saw somewhere in the PFS guide PDF I downloaded they allow core races and Nagaji, Kitsune, Tengu, and Wayang. So, what I've put together so far is a Nagaji sorcerer (with the Serpentine bloodline, of course!) and a Wayang shadow puppeteer (bard archetype).

I am partial CHA-based characters. The weirder the better. Just because.

Note that if you play the Nagaji or Wayang characters, you will need a copy of the Advanced Race Guide (hardcopy or watermarked pdf).

To play a Serpentine blood sorcerer, you will need a copy of the Advanced Player's Guide.

Okay, thanks for that!

Another thing to remember is that Society play tends to not be heavy roleplaying. There are exception scenarios, but generally the games are designed to be action-packed, and to fit into a 4-hour period of time.

So, you may not be able to fully play your weird character the way you like. But, everyone and every character is welcome and enjoyed.

True; there's only so much time, isn't there.

But I just wanted to see if I could play something to make things more interesting.

If you find a way to role-play a situation instead of combat you are not penalized for it. Some scenarios can be combat heavy and others can be very RP heavy. When you sit down at a table it is up to you and your fellow players on how things will play out.

The combat end of things is always important. I like playing with the magic and skills. There always seems to be something out there that brute force just can't overcome!

It's all cool just so long as I have fun in the process!

Hi again!

I think I've more or less got things sorted out for three characters to have on hand.

The characters I have are:

  • Sefet'wy-tep - a human mobility fighter (dexterity-based fighter archetype)
  • Ss'alat - a nagaji sorcerer (serpentine bloodline, of course!)
  • Shutakasuma - a wayang shadow puppeteer (bard racial archetype)

I threw together background stories for Sefet'wy-tep and Ss'alat. Still working on a viable little bio for Shutakasuma.

I wouldn't mind having some feedback on this lot. I think I made some interesting and viable PCs, if I do say so!

Thanks in advance for any feedback and advice!

Were you looking for feedback on your character builds or the backstories?

Mostly the builds. A bit of feedback on the abridged bios wouldn't hurt either...

Hi again!

  • Sefet'wy-tep - a human mobility fighter (dexterity-based fighter archetype)

Looks good. If you're dropping the cha to 8 you may as well go to 7, you're not making charisma based checks either way.

For being human you get one ethnic language based on yourbackground, that and your 12 int would get you Kelish (ethnic), osirioni (smrt), common (for being alive) and one more for being smrt.

Sounds like a field commission, as opposed to someone that studied for 3 years in absolom.

  • Ss'alat - a nagaji sorcerer (serpentine bloodline, of course!)
  • Looks ok but i don't see traits.

Shutakasuma - a wayang shadow puppeteer (bard racial archetype) []

    Looks ok.

  • Shadow Lodge

You might want to add a few comments on where you see these builds going: There are builds that look fine at the start but might not turn out like you expect them at higher levels.

Beyond that, the basic questions are:

    • Legality - Do you own the books (either hardcopy or PDF watermarked with your account name) for every option you've taken? You will need to bring these with you to the game in case the GM has any question about how the feature works.
    • Legality - Is everthing you selected PFS legal? http://www.archivesofnethys.com/Default.aspx is my personal favorite site for determining this: It's not 'official' but it is well maintained and much easier to use than the official Additional Resources document.
    • Tactics - Is your build negated by fairly common circumstances (No room for mounts in a dungeon, undead are immune to all your charm spells, melee heavy group makes maneuvering impossible, other players' tactics often completely negate your own, etc.). If so, do you have a backup plan, or are you fine with being hamstrung at times?
    • Duration - Is your build going to be enjoyable for levels 1 through 11? There isn't a lot of PFS play at levels 12 or higher, so try not to center your build around abilities gained at levels 10 or 11, as you won't get to use them much.

    Hi yet again:

    Thanks for the input.

Charisma for Sefet'wy-tep. Thanks for the tip. I dropped that to 7 and bolstered his strength to 13 so he can carry a bit more gear. I guess the low charisma score is bearable. Provided he doesn't talk to people (much).

Languages for Sefet'wy-tep the human: OOPS! Couldn't read my own writing, apparently (even though it was typed). Thanks for pointing that one out!

I guess his story does need a little fixing up. I just threw that together quickly with pencil and paper before typing it up. I'll have to make that a little more PFS-oriented, I guess.

Traits for Ss'alat the nagaji: they were there under Special abilities. I had to double check to make sure I didn't do an "oopsies" there too. Anyway, the traits in question were the Civilized social trait, and the Vagabond Child regional trait.

Thanks for giving Shutakasuma a quick look-see. I'll try to put together a wee bio for him tonight as well.

Thanks again for the input. I did make a few gaffs with Sefet'wy-tep and Ss'alat, but not as many as I was I thought I may have done.

    Hi there!

Thanks for the input first of all…

  • legality (books etc): I have watermarked PDF copies of most of the material and in a pinch I can borrow a hard copy for a session (money is a bit tight at the moment). Thanks for the link too; I'll look through that too.
  • Tactics: I like to have my characters travel as light as possible. I avoid some of the more common mistakes, like trying to bring mounts where there are spiral staircases. And as I see it, being hamstrung at times is part of the game. And can be amusing if it doesn't get you killed. Some times you do amazingly well and other times circumstances conspire against you, but things all seem to even out in the long run.
  • Duration: I think these builds should be enjoyable. I'll be pleased with myself if they survive adventures! This adventuring thing is a risky business, so just surviving is enjoyable to my way of thinking. Getting better at what you do along the way is a big bonus!

I do appreciate the comments. When I get advice from people who know the game much better than myself, it's all good!

    Thanks again!
