85 Year Old Wizard, Looking for a Nice Outsider to Bind to his Will (18HD or less)

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I am a level 15 wizard and got the feat replacement that gives me the true name of an outsider of 18HD or less. I am looking for the best (power, utility or both) and most broken options out there to bind to my will, and to the Nine Hells with the consequences! Please give some amount of description to any suggestions. Thanks guys.

Planetar.

You want a 16th level Cleric Cohort, with angel stuff on top?

I think the answer is yes.

a 10th level succubus sorcerer. Exactly 18HD and well, has a challenge rating of 12

there are a lot of utility spells you could cram on a 10th level succubus. the profane gift can boost your intelligence

and you already have suggestion, charm monster, detect thoughts and vampiric touch at will at an adjusted caster level of 18th, permanent tongues and could load up on low level utility or blast spells you really can't be bothered to take at caster level 10th

A planetar.

Efreeti genie. 3 wishes a day. Has to do what you want. (Warning: GM might have entire plane of genies come after you for using a genie like that).

This is the highest CR outsider I could find that is 18 hd or less

Devil, Immolation (Puragaus)

Running and Tarantula have pretty much nailed it.

There may be a few other options (I'll have to ponder), but consider: you're getting free wishes or a cleric with a caster level higher than yourself. Either is AWESOME.

My name is Running now I guess. =p

Those are two pretty strong contenders, yup. There is an alignment issue -- if you're not LG or close to it, I'd think twice about trying to control a planetar. As for the efreet, IMO that's just asking your DM to get creative, and not in a good way.

If you're LE or close to it, the Belier and Apostate Devils are both powerful and strange. The Belier is a face monster with crazy high Bluff, Diplomacy and Sense Motives; it possesses people with its magic jar SLA and wreaks havoc. The Apostate is one of the very few creatures with the innate power to change someone's alignment (towards LE, of course).

If you're NE or close to it, consider the Astradaemon. It's every bit as good in melee as the Planetar, if less charismatic. Note that its Soul Siphon ability stacks with itself, meaning that if enough creatures die within 10' of it there's almost no limit to how much its Str can increase. Seriously, that's RAW. If it plunges into battle and kills six low-level warriors? It immediately gains 6d8 hp and +12 Str for the next 10 minutes. And it can keep doing that. And if you feed it a 5 HD creature it gets +1 on all attacks, saves and checks for the next 24 hours on top of that.

If you're CE or close to it, consider the marilith.

If you're N or close to it, consider the bythos aeon. It has some pretty respectable SLAs and is quite hard to kill.

If you're CG or close to it, consider the brigidine. Earthquake 3x/day and a bunch of handy SLAs, but also a respectable combat brute.

A first level planetar Cleric (17th Cleric casting)
a 5th level Ghaele Eladrin Cleric (18th Cleric Casting).

You want a Pasha (Noble Shaitan) genie. They're 18 HD, grant three wishes a day to nongenies (which you are), and most importantly, they're Lawful Neutral, not Lawful Evil. So whatever bargain you strike with them, they'll stick with it and won't attempt to screw you over with loopholes out of hand.

This guide may be helpful.

Hi.

Applying class levels to creatures to get to the HD limit sounds like a grey area to me as far as True Name is concerned; the ability doesn't say you get to customize your bound outsider after all, so I'd check with DM for that.

Anyway, as far as sheer wrecking power goes I don't think you can beat a Vavakia Demon. Solid offense including a chance to stun as well as apply negatives levels and a DC 30 breath weapon that does 20d6, staggers, and potentially 1d8 wisdom damage. Defensively it has decent AC, good Fort/Will, immunities/energy resistances, DR, Unholy Aura, and Frightening Presence.

It's pretty much a beast all around but also the kind of outsider you don't want to abuse too much as you know the second you look weak in front of it it is likely to turn around and try to finish you off.

Big fan of Shining Children. There's a reason those crazy Thassilonian Runelords bound them, and it wasn't just for their use as a light sources (though some did. For a mere 16HD, you're getting some the best SLAs in the game.

I think it'll be difficult to find something more broken than 3 wishes a day, although the planetar has its charms.

I will also recommended a couatl, they are weaker at 12 hd(you might convince the DM to advance it or add class levels), but you'll get access to plane shift at will, constant detect good, evil, law, chaos, some decent cleric buffs (FoM), and also invisibility at will which stacks nicely with mindblank.

Yeah, between that whole article on Wishcraft and Wish-warps from the Legacy of Fire AP as well as constantly having something hostile to you granting you powers that it is always trying to pervert, I think an Efreeti is a terrible choice. I can think of few DMs who would allow someone 3 wishes a day for free.

the 10th level succubus sorcereress would probably be the least shenanigan loaded. it is there to cover the buffs and blasts your wizard doesn't care to prepare so you can focus on more wizardy things.

the succubus serves you because you know her true name and because she seeks to redeem herself or something, so you could use that to start with a true neutral succubus.

but i imagine the point of spending a feat on such a highly specific ability hints that you are getting a unique outsider, which means if it is too weak, you can beef it up with class levels, feat and skill point swaps and the heroic monster array. being that the succubus is only a 10th level sorcerer, even with this grey area, it isn't keeping up with the 15th+ wizard that bound it and makes a good sidekick

if it were a straight standard succubus or similar outsider, everybody would go for the planetar, so weaker outsiders with class levels, though a grey area, practically has to be an option to keep certain monsters viable. or else everybody will bind a planetar for the pocket battle cleric or a noble genie of some kind for the wishes.

I'ld advise against the succubus. It may be too much for an 85 year old.
Pick some sort of abstract concept outsider instead.

succubi are great for that +2 profane int bonus, but to truly max it out you can bind a Lilitu Demon for a +4 profane int bonus.

Of course I would be utterly terrified that the thing would eventually turn me into a husk and subsume my identity. Either way, just make sure you can soak 2d6 cha damage.

That's why you bind a Pasha instead. Lawful Neutral alignment and generally quite reasonable.

18th level half-fiend or half-celestial (insert core race here), casting class of your choice? I can't find anything that says that you can't bind native outsiders by their True Names.

Well, that seems appropraite due to the fact that the thread title makes me think of a tag for a dating profile.

don't diss the 10th level succubus Sorcereress, she is extremely faithful and looking for a lifelong companion to help show her the light and allow her to experience things no evil cultist could.

That pretty much holds true no matter what you bind. Anything that powerful, has friends, or at the very least, enemies or supervisors with a vested interest in knowing what's happened to it.

And long walks on the beach.

Anyway, I am not dissing her, but simply adding some humor to the thread title. Although admittedly, it starts to sound creepy when you take the 'bind to his will' part in that light.

Ahem.
