Ways to see through obscuring mist

Advice

Grand Lodge

Our party got a horn of fog -- obscuring mist -- and I think we should keep it for battle field control. I know about Goz masks, but they're pricey. We have a sylph archer who is planning to get cloud gazer feat.

I also know that water oracles can see through mist, and that the water spirit can grant a spirit guide oracle a hex to do so.

Are there other ways to see through mist? Spells? Other equipment that might be cheaper and keep my melee guys happy?

Hmm

Seriously, I am looking for anything that might help here. Potions, alternate abilities that give sonar or scent or something. My sorcerer has been all about battlefield control. I've just been handed an interesting tool, and I'd like to make the best use of it without screwing over our melee specialists.

A spell that brought down darkness might also have interesting battlefield control possibilities, as we have 4 members of the party with darkvision (not me, but just about everyone else.) Alas, we're dungeon crawling, which means that just about every monster we've met so far has darkvision as well.

So... I'm really looking into tactical possibilities with the obscuring mist. Suggestions?

Hmm

On my phone right now, so I can't check to be certain, but I think I recall a magical item called something like, fogcutting lenses or some such. Can see through fogs and the like but you get a -4 penalty to perception due to the lenses distortion.

Let me put some context here. We're fourth level. The melee guys have not been able to get their magic weapons and really good armor yet.

I know about Goz masks, but at 8K a pop they are out of our price range. I'm looking for cheaper, short-term solutions. We've got the potential that two party members (our rogue/oracle and our sylph slayer) could see through the mist at level 5, especially if the rogue oracle goes spirit guide archetype. He's been gone for two levels, and so hasn't actually finalized his oracle choices yet.

I'm just looking for something that would give our two melee specialists an option or edge in dealing with mist, even if it's limited use. Are there any spells that let people see through mist, or temporarily give a scent ability or something?

If not, we still might be able to make this work with message cantrips and such having those sighted directing those who aren't, but I'm looking for cheap and dirty options here.

Hmm

I've looked into this myself, and I think all the options I've ever encountered have already been listed. You could, however, approach your DM about creating a new spell, and there are rules for that process. Costs some gp and time, and you'd have to make some Spellcraft checks, but once you've got your spell, you can use it over and over again. Myself, I'd imagine a 2nd-level spell that lets you see 60' through mist/fog/etc for 1 min/level. Once the spell was invented, you could even get it put into a wand, and then cast it on the whole party when you need it.

A 3rd party spell called Mistsight. I honestly dont understand why its not in CRB.

Its a 1st level Divination spell that lets the caster (Target(You)) ignore the vision impairments of fog, steam and other Water based concealment. It has a duration measured in minute/caster level.

It does not specify range or if it lets you see through a body of water, but for your purposes this spell should be sufficient.

As a vision spell it ought to turn up on the spell list for Sor/Wis, Alchemist, Ranger, Druid and Cleric.

Its a cool spell to keep in a wand.

Nope, Goz Masks and Fogcutting Lenses are the only magic items that I'm aware of. Neither is really cheap.

You might be able to persuade your GM to allow a potion crafter to make potions of fogvision as a custom item. There is no spell to see through fog or mist.

There is of course the blindfighting feat. And wildshaping and some of the beast shape spells might give you scent. Form of the Dragon III gives you blindsense but that's 8th level. Echolocation is 4th level.

Outside of a few classes, there really aren't many low-cost options. I think that's by design.

It's a little higher level, but there's the Echolocation spell. Eventually. But it's self-only.
Orcs/half-orcs in the party could take Keen Scent as a feat.

There's the Shaman of fire as well
Storm Druid archetype, sort of
Flame Dancer bard @ level 3 can get the whole party, as a bardic performance.

I'll keep an eye out for other options.

Actually, I'm good with your answers. If there is not a cheaply available solution to obscuring mist, the opposition won't find it easy to see through the mist either. We'll have 2 of our party able to see through the mist -- our ranged specialist and the sneaky, sneaky rogue spirit guide oracle with the help of the wandering water spirit.

Our melee guys can cope. Once they get within 5 feet, they can see enough to fight. Plus, one of the melee guys has a trained animal companion that can scent.

Here's what I'm thinking. Our sylph archer directs our melee people to where they need to go while raining down death on the enemy. We keep one of our melee guys with her, so that if bad guys go after the "voice in the mist" he can be there waiting for his attacks of opportunity. Meanwhile, our rogue oracle sneaks around and causes as much trouble as he can.

I'll be blind... but by the time the horn has laid down the fog, I'll have grease in front of our archer to trip everyone who tries to come after her.

Yeah, this can work.

I will talk with our GM to see if our alchemist can do spell research for a fog vision potion as well. It will make our alchemist (the player is only 11) very happy, since she likes being the solution to problems. Well, that and throwing bombs.

The mist is also a great way to shut down enemy archers, and provide all sorts of concealment. I never thought when I started this character that she'd be the battlefield tactics person, but hey... I'm having a lot of fun with her. And this horn will give me one more tool in my battlefield control toolbox.

Hmm

Liberty's Edge

Your melee characters might want to take the Blind-Fight feat. It turns that 20% mischance into a 4% mischance, by allowing you to roll twice on any mischance due to concealment. My characters have found it surprisingly useful!

Scarab Sages

There is a Barbarian Archetype, Sea Reaver, that can see through mists as well.
