They're calling this process "crowdforging." If certain people are uncomfortable with this process, perhaps they should wait to start their gametime/subscription time until Open Enrollment begins. Hopefully by that time, the game will be in a state that they feel is acceptable.

Does it matter if the majority do not feel the product is viable when game data becomes persistent?

What if people are uncomfortable with what the state of the game was when the product began and how it will impact the future state of the game?

Does it matter when a player chooses to begin their paid playtime if the world itself was created in a state they will forever be uncomfortable contributing to?

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! You hit exactly what I have been trying to warn about. I've seen many games (often with terrific design ideas) launch in terrible state. Most of them can't maintain a sufficient player-base to keep things running (and the active population of forum is probably less than 1/100th the player-base needed for an MMORPG). In others, especially ones in which the players have a major impact on the world, the economy and territorial conquest are sufficiently skewed by play under unfinished and unbalanced systems as to alter the game experience in an undesirable fashion, lessening the experience for early adopters and creating a situation that late-comers aren't willing to participate in.

You're absolutely postively correct but for one thing. PFO is in Alpha status, not launch. Champagne may have been smashed over the hull of our luxury liner, but she's far from finished.

If I am right about that then the seeker of wisdom is more like a tracker, spotting trail sign.

Nice analogy. I like it.

Aren't his concerns specifically related to what the status of the game should be when it launches?

When do you consider her 'finished'? Early enrollment was meant to begin last week and will start relatively soon. How much farther will she be when that happens?

I would consider Early Enrollment as basically a closed beta test, to allow access to only those chosen (in this case paid money ahead of time) to gain access to the game in a state which is playable but barely and definitely not in a gold/stable state.

Things like graphics improvements which still need to happen.
Skill changes
Achievment gates
AH just went in, trading is likely to be bugged somewhere too
Crafting continues but could use improvement not everything is in
Network stabilization-desync issues, player capacity/load issues on server instances, have many more than 25 players been in one area at the same time to drag down performance?
General combat improvements, whack a mole animations playing after combat ends on server displayed on client.

I have been an mmorpg designer, this is definitely an alpha build, it's got plenty of things to fix. I think the crowdforge idea should help prioritize some things but i'm sure they have their own little list going on duct taped to the whiteboard.

Got teleported to Pheonix pass and lost last few hours traing again :D Also the mad wolf from TK has moved up there :D

Have you ever participated in a closed beta for an MMO where there was no planned character wipe? What was the state of the game when player data became permanently persistent?

Saddest thing about the crash was I was holding a stack of +3 recipes .. Golden Crystal , Azure Crystal etc for another keeper who had not been able to logon for a few days. She was going to use them to start full production of high plus versions of all the wands and staffs ... all gone now, so sad.

My 2 CP as a total noob to MMORPGs.

Of course alpha has bugs that are being worked out, but that doesn't bother me much because this feels like the free sample to me. I paid to get in to beta, and these characters are getting wiped so I don't feel very bad when I screw up and waste XP on dumb stuff or the game glitches something in my inventory out of existence. It's irksome, but as far as I am concerned it's like getting free food while the cook perfects their food.

I know beta won't be perfect or complete, but I would rather GW hammer out the major flaws during the "free samples" phase.

Yeah true it is Alpha.

Not only is it free but we can have up to 3 characters per invite (although I only ever used the one invite myself, running 6 or even 9 chars in Alpha would have left me no life). So all in all we get a pretty good deal.

But by the same token we were all set to test out +1/+2 versions of all 5 T1 wands and all 5 T1 staffs when she got back from her trip later today so losing all the recipes was something of a setback. Disappointing.

When I log back in will check the bank (do I have to walk back to TK to see the TK bank?) in case the game moved stuff there but I suspect they are just gone.

Goblin Squad Member

Seems to me the bank is global. The AH is local.

I've participated in many closed beta's but none that I can recall where there was not a player wipe at the end of closed beta.

However, In SWG live/gold after several years, that game basically did a 100% player wipe and made all previous characters (skill based) into a class based system effectively wiping everything you had done in the previous 5 yrs of game play. We called it being NGE'd.

As far as state of the game for it...well, They also changed it from a sandboxed MMO to a theme park MMO in the process adding millions of quests etc. Thousands of players dumped it like a hot rock, including my guild of 500 as I was one of the last 3 members of Knights of Kauri on our server before logging off for the final time myself.

To your point though, most mmo's when the reach the END of the closed beta state though are more or less feature complete minus a few here or there and then the roll up into open beta where they start doing stress testing and bringing in thousands of players to try to get a judge of how many servers they need to spin up for gold release and to wet the whistle of would be customers. No mmo is truly finished as its an always updating content system some devs are more apt to update more often than others though.

Goblin Squad Member

If most MMOs spike in popularity and then fall flat, nearly dead, are we so invested in their development template that we will not suffer changes?

It bad touched me in Rathglen. :(

Goblin Squad Member

I think fear is a bigger issue for me than entitlement.

I get that its an Alpha, and it'll have bugs, but currently it is, in fact, unplayable for me. That is, it consistently crashes within a minute or two of entering the world.

I would be less concerned if the EE timeline wasn't just around the corner (and a corner that's been pushed back several times). I have this sinking fear that the "closed beta" (to use the common analogy here) that I paid for will also be unplayable for me.

Goblin Squad Member

@PhineasGage have you contacted support@goblinworks.com ?

Scarab Sages Goblin Squad Member

Have the devs mentioned any optimization or general code-tightening that will be associated with EE? I understand that we're currently running on buggy, unoptimized Alpha code, but Alpha is coming to an end soon. Do we know when GW plans to start smoothing out the code, bringing the processing requirements to a less intensive level, etc?

Note: I'm not asking about graphics improvements at all. I'm just wondering when we can expect the code to run smoothly without requiring a brand new, high-end computer.

Several people have mentioned that PFO currently requires as much processing power as a AAA graphics-intensive game, without providing the graphics that would usually come with those requirements. The go-to answer has been "This is unoptimized Alpha code." Will PFO still be an unoptimized resource hog on EE day?

Code improves with every update. It's a continuous iterative process.

Exactly. The auction houses are almost empty. I need recipes "Steel Plate +2&+3", "Steel Ingot +1,+2&+3", "Basic Hide Sheet +2&+3" and "Weak Varnish +1,+2&+3". Oh, and of course the recipes Tyncale mentions.

So get out there you warriors and kill things! I am in Rathglen (over 20 recipes in AH btw <=advertisement).

For the record: just kidding. Have fun testing Alpha!

Hi Hogar. :) I have been thinking about hoofing it to Rathglen, I hear it is the busiest town after Thornkeep. My characters hail from Ossian Crossing and I have been trekking back and forth between there and Thornkeep most of my time. Quit a trip, but worthwhile if you take down the smaller groups of Ogres (preferably the duo's), and off course it is a very nice route because you walk right next to a cliff most of the time, with the countryside to the right stretching out below you.

This morning I went to Humbersomething to the East and South of TK, but found the mobs mostly starved of recipes and Spells. Had more luck with those near Ossian. Probably just an RNG thing but still. Lots of nodes though.

How's Rathglen for loot? I'll be sure to check out the AH there!

Rathglen has lot of skeleton escalation around it, and they seem to drop a lot of weapons. I have put weapons in the AH, but no takers.

I put stuff on the Phoenix Pass AH just to try to seed it. So stop by (or move) there if you are looking for mats or recipes for sale.

I believe firmly in local AHs to make settlements matter. We just need people to put stuff on their local AH to get the ball rolling...If you can't use it, then just sell it for fun (for now.)

I only wish the AH had a 'only show items for sale' feature!

Is this the new trade thread? ;)

I am willing to trade lots of good stuff for basic strips +2 or 3 and yew staves +2 or 3.

I have a ton of recipes and meteoric iron...

oh, and lodestone.

Goblin Squad Member

I just a put a few (only handful) of strips +2 up on the PP AH just before the server downtime. Assuming we don't get a roll-back there will be some there until they are snapped up...

Dude, what are you doing to me? After I read this, I have not been scrambling to log in so fast anymore, since my virgin days in '99 when I had just discovered Everquest!

Patching, patching, patching.......grrrr.

Cal, I'll definately be back in Ossian too. It's my hometown! To be honest, even without fast travel the distances between the towns are not a huge hurdle to me, but I am sure this has to do with the fact that the world is still a pretty safe place. :)

Tyncale wrote:

Rathglen has the "double/tripple starter goblin" bug. They drop more and better recipes than the bonedancer escalation mobs nw of Rathglen.

But i think it's stupid to exploit an obvious bug, so i stopped farming them.

@Doc,

Efforts spent on learning the game, how things work (or doesn't work), and testing different character builds is never wasted. :)

Goblin Squad Member

Yes, I have been thinking of letting it rest for a while, but on the other hand, I am finally learning a few of the ropes now, and that will help me when EE starts. SO I try not to get too attached to the wealth I am currently accumulating, and my gear and all the recipes and spells I am learning.....

Goblin Squad Member

I am still curious to see what things will be carrying T2 recipes on a regular basis. I have gotten lucky rolls a number of times, Apothocary recipes for lvl 9 and 12 and some other I can't recall, but nothing that I really want. :)

Goblin Squad Member

They might enjoy crafting. Maybe, eh?

I take it these recipes drop only from escalation mobs? Never seen a Tier 2 recipe from an ogre so far.
