Falling and how to move on with your life

Given the amount of threads out there regarding paladin falling for practically everything other than scratching their nose and currently playing a paladin and having through through this myself.

I thought I would bring up the question: "How do you move on after you've fallen?"

Getting a atonement might seem like the most simple way but if the paladin willingly chooses to fall and doesn't want to hop back on that pain train what are the best options for retraining your now fallen knight?

For one whom fell from good but not from law a Cavalier or samurai is an option (especially if you took the bonded mount). Choosing to follow a new code that might be less restrictive than your old one while maintaining your martial training to the fullest.

For one whom fell from law then Bloodrager with the celestial bloodline is a fitting change. Especially for one whom without their laws and god restricting them have let their anger run wild.

Of course the obvious fall all the way to Antipaladin is there but most GM's would be telling you to hand over your character sheet due to issues with evil characters and party dynamic.

Any other ideas?

Retraining.

Warpriest, assuming you didn't completely crap all over your faith in the fall going warpriest is a solid option.

antipaladin, duh.

as they say, if you can't beat them, cut off their face and plaster it to the front of your helmet as you beat them anyway.

Well I guess it would depend on how you fall and what your stats are. I'm assuming you went for the stereotypical bruiser paladin. So in that case I'd say the bloodrager with the celestial bloodline would be a reasonable change if you went from law to chaotic, especially if your an aasimar it would make total sense. (btw it may help us to give you ideas if we knew your stats and race.) Also I'm not sure if I'm clear on something. Are you planning to fall? If so you may want to just screw Paladin all together although it sounds like you have already started. But I digress since that is not an option at this point. So to better help you decide what to be we are gonna need to know what your interests are. What do u want to do? I know you said that a cavalier or samurai may interest you to maintain full effectiveness when it comes to your martial ability, but hear me out, what about picking up a class that gives you interesting abilities instead of raw martial power? Again I don't know your stats so I can't say for sure what you would benefit from but you already have proficiency with heavy armor and all martial weapons, (and maybe then some if you took exotic weapon proficiency) so choosing a class that has average melee capabilities but gives you some cool tricks may be a nice touch. What I'm saying is gaining another class that one of it's selling points is weapon proficiency may be a little redundant.

Varying stuff

Thanks for the advice noble. I guess I should have been clearer. I am not planning to fall (However another paladin in the same game is skating on the line) and the options I gave already is where he would likely end up in case of a fall.

I meant this as a more generic question to provide advice to anyone thinking about or is in heavy danger of falling the options they have in rebuilding their character back up from the ashes of a fall.

there's always just a fighter too.

I second the Antipaladin route. Not only is it thematically appropriate, but 9/10 times you don't need to retrain out your feats, worry about your stats, etc...it mostly seemlessly transitions.

I went sorcerer into dragon disciple. The stats lined up and I only had a couple paladin levels. After the ACG I would just move into Bloodrager.

I would most Like a mix of the statements that Imbicatus made. Now I'm not sure if this is legal but I don't see why it shouldn't be. Be a bloodrager to stay up to snuff on martial capabilities and to make use of your decent charisma score, take the draconic bloodline and go dragon disciple to get crazy good stat pluses that your character would greatly benefit from being a martial character. Now that may not go along with the concept of the character as I don't know what his overall theme is but if a bloodrager can qualify for the dragon disciple (which I feel he should be able to since he can cast spontaneously and does have a draconic bloodline) this would mechanically be a great option. Now unfortunately I don't believe he could wear heavy armor and still cast, as well assume bloodrager abilities probably being restricted by it, (idk never played a bloodrager) but the pluses to your main stats you would get by bloodraging and from dragon disciple would be ideal.
