What this thread is not: Yet another thread to argue about the balance issues of the Summoner class or tell us how you hate the class. There are plenty of threads for that.

What it is A thread to give examples of fictional characters that could provide good origin stories for Eidolons, perhaps with some reininterpretation because, gee not all fiction is structured with Pathfinder rules in mind. If it touches on an argument about summoners, feel free to mention it, but only in passing.

Stitch--Lilo and Stitch, dangerous, comes from another planet but it would work as another dimension. Also good example of the "imaginarry friend" of a child summoner which isn't so imaginary and a good example to bring up as a counter argument to the idea that an inexperinced (low level) character can't have an eidolon.

Other Dimensional Magical Girlfriends--Two come to mind. Jeanie from I dream of Jeannie and Belldandy from the Manga/Anime Oh My Goddess. Both are supernatural and come from out there. There is tension with the human. Both but Belldandy in particular would have an archtype increasing mental stats probably at the cost of physical stats which Paizo has not given us (but should). While both too powerful for the standard Eidolon, they could be inspiration for an eidolon.

R2D2--Could be a good model for an Eidolon. Very Loyal to master Luke. Skill monkey rather than combat monster. Literally falls from another world.

Hope this is interesting.

Kerney

How about Groot? Big bruiser type whose form is not really set in stone, as he alters it in various ways. "Dies" but can return, in a diminished capacity for a time.

How about Bobby? Large, strong, loyal, and would appear to be a figment of Melvin's mind. A kids imagination come to life. Seems like Eidolon Material to me.

Let's have an anime rundown sure:

Calvin and Hobbes. Hobbes makes an awesome Eidolon.

Guilty Gear (Zato-1/Eddie)

Blazblue: (Carl Clover, Relius Clover)

Sherman and Mr. Peabody.

I assume Sherman's the eidolon in that case.

Venom/Carnage for Synthesists

Snuffleupagus: an imaginary friend that only Big Bird could see and is not a creature that appears in nature.

Paizo Employee Sales Imp

This Skrillex video is totally a halfling summoner with the childlike trait and her eidolon.

Call them furies http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/CodexAlera?from=Main.Codex Alera

Hmm, them. I like Jim butcher, but never got into codex alera

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1&2
Mostly because they are my great whit buffalo's of PS2 gaming that I just recently managed to get hold of. :)

The cat in the hat. Also I'm going to say Tony, Danny Torrences' imaginary friend from "The Shining".

I like the idea of this being an actual child. Summoner is one of the classes I can easily picture a small child being, rather than a big strong fighter.

Caprica Six for Gaius Baltar in BSG.

Scooby to Shaggy.

Nah. Daemons are pretty much straight up Familiars, not Eidolons.

I'd say that Daemons are far better examples then most of the stuff mentioned in this thread.

not to mention that a lot of them are combat oriented.

They are good. I just felt they were so obvious that I intentionally shot for more obscure.

I might as well put this out here since I thought of doing it with the summoner, MINIONS!

It's been getting reprints for years.

But yes, the characters are good models of Synthesist Summoners. It's a shame that Blood God Disciple while legal, doesn't actually combo with Synthesist.

Not quite 'minions', but still just the right combination of invulnerable and expendable that make them perfect...

Hellboy. Comes from another dimension, raised by the Professor. Suits a stand back, lore seeker type summoner. And while Eidolons are normally obedient, they aren't slavishly so. The lower Int score could be due to the big fella not really bothering to think his way through things, preferring to just smack things with his fist.

And give it the Gunsmith & Weapon Prof Firearms for big boom hand gun.

David Eddings had an area in his Belgariad/Malloreon series of books where spellcasters would summon ineffable demons, part of the summoning was picturing a form to hold control of said demons, part of their duels was trying to make something more gross, horrifying and anatomically improbable than the person you were battling.

Anyway, Eidolons fit into that concept to a T.

It's one of the few places that a RAW summoner fits. For me though, a summoner is more flavorful with a more limited selection of evolutions by selecting from the list in Ultimate Magic.

Furies have been mentioned, but the Denarians from Harry Dresden are perfect Synthesists - outer planer beings that the human can call upon; they have a physical manifestation that changes how they look and grants all sorts of extra abilities.

I have a concept kicking around based on Elsa from Frozen. She's either a winter witch or a boreal sorcerer, but she has a couple levels of summoner. Her Eidolon is Olaf, the snowman who loves warm hugs. He uses his carrot nose as a gore attack.

Beyond low levels, this could go a couple ways. You could either concentrate on witch/sorcerer levels, and just keep Olaf around for flavor and comic relief, or you could add some more levels of summoner and evolve him into Marshmallow, the big guardian snowman who guards Elsa's castle.

I am playing one with the personality based off of Fred from the movie Drop Dead Fred, it is pure recklessness. The Daemons would be an interesting concept for a child summoner. Some time ago I read about a delusional summoner who believed their eidolon was the herald to one of the Old Great Ones. So it would be a toss up for me between the delusional summoner who worships her eidolon or having as many as possible little yellow minions.

-Max and one of the Wild Things

-Tip and Jack Pumpkinhead from the second Oz book

-Donnie Darko and Frank the Bunny

-Jack and Tyler Durden (always finishing each others sentences and punching each other)

-The Family of Blood and the Scarecrows from Doctor Who

-Norman Bates and Mother

-Pamela Voorhees and Jason

-Haley Joel Osment and Bruce Willis (doesn't realize he's an eidolon, thinks he's part of the party)

-Geppetto and Pinocchio (Geppetto treats his eidolon like a real boy)

Sebastian and Ciel from Black Butler. (Must take Skilled Profession Butler and Skilled Bluff/Disguise to pretend to be "One hell of a butler")

Simon, with a cohort Kamina, who can summon a mechanical eodilon called Guren Lagann.

Fate/Stay Night. Any of the Magi and their summoned spirits.

Godzilla.

Stanley and his Monster, from DC Comics, particularly his more recent appearances.

Wild Flower from Jade Empire is an interesting take on the Synthesist, with two personalities for her eidolon suit.

I wish there were options for a more intelligent Eidolon, less melee oriented eidolon, with better spell casting options. Yes, you can make a skill monkey eidolon, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Frankly I would just go for Shadow Caller (Fetchling racial summoner archetype)

You summon creatures with the shadow template and some very nice ones too with your summon monster ability, which is what I would use most of the time for various Jackie created creatures.

Excuse me. My beloved wife is not one of those Poke-creatures you speak of. AND NEITHER ARE OUR CHILDREN.

I would poke your eyes out with a sword for the insult. But it is obvious you are blind and addle brained. Therefore I will let you suffer in your ignorance.

If you're not Poke-ing your wife, where did the children come from?

i did it

biped
bite x 2 - 2
head x 2 - 4
reach x 2 - 2
large - 4
Shadow form - 2
unnatural aura - 1
tentacle x 2 - 2
skilled (bluff) - 1
undead appearance 3 - 6 (see if you can get your GM to say light is positive energy for you, and darkness is negative)
fast healing - 4
Shadow Blend - 2

The Darkness is level 20 if not having a few mythic levels.

So, does that make the master summoner's eidolons and summoned critters the schoolgirls from Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" video?

I like really much Akroma from Magic the Gathering: A really powerful mage has his woman killed before him in battle, goes partially nuts and subconsciously recreates an idealized (and angelic...no, really, wings and all) version of her to always be with him.
