I'm dickering with myself over the build I posted up there, first of all the stats are a little off, but it's the stats and the other level 1 decisions that I'm grappling with.

What is better more strength or more con?

Str 15, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 14, Cha 8
vs
Str 16, Dex 16, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 14, Cha 8

Do you take the extra feat because the switch hitter is feat intensive, or is it worth having the animal companion have the extra +2.

Looking back at the old Treantmonk ranger guide, he goes much more extreme Str over Dex, but the ranger can wear heavy armour, so suffers less for the lower dex.

I'm basically down to twiddling the dials, I'm not actually sure I can make a "wrong choice" because the character is going to be enjoyable either way, but as the campaign starts in a couple weeks I can't help but poke at it and ponder.

My Hunter I built is Str based on 25 PB as it very rounded PC in my opinion at First Level

Con:12 +1
Int:12 +1
Wis:16 +3
Cha:11 +0

Animal Com:

Level 1
Lead Blades
Magic Fang
Summon Natures Ally

Outflank requires BAB 4 or level 2 hunter precise companion feat.

If you are going to be in meter consider moving some points from wis or Cha to have more con, you can boost you wis long before you ge level 6 spells.

Seeing as there is no Hunter guide as of yet what would folks suggest i read in the guides to get a rough idea on how to build/play the Hunter class.

I read in this thread about the Glaive/Trip sort and i really like that concept. PFS- Human Hunter with reach weapon and Big Cat or Wolf.

Tandem Trip Teamwork feat isn't bad, roll twice and take the best results off trip attempts. Both you and wolf would get it.

For 2nd level spells, take a look at VINE STRIKE from the Melee Tactics Toolbox.

+1d6 on all natural attacks with a chance to entangle. Mins/round.

It seems perfect for raptors and cats

Dotting for interest. Do you guys have any good builds involving captors?

I have a deep abiding love for the 'vengance strike' skirmishers trick that your companion can learn. And 'planar focus' is a custom made feat for hunters that's too powerful to ignore (can potentially add 25d6 to a full attack routine, and that only 1/3 of its potential benifit).

At low to mid levels a well built tiger can out damage a small party. Especially when you add in out of turn attacks from combat reflexes, vengance strike and broken wing gambit.

By level 8 that tiger has up to five attacks and is easily doing an extra 4d6 on each. (Vine sticks, planar focus:fire and precise strike). All at full BAB with pretty decent bonuses to hit.

If I ran the numbers correctly through herolab a level 8 tiger with studded leather armour (and that's it) can dish out up to 126 damage a round on its turn, with almost guaranteed multiple attacks out of turn.

Do you have any good builds with Planar Focus? Really dig the feat but haven't been able to come up with a good build that doesn't use an animal friend.

Meant to say Raptors. (damn autocorrect)

I've been playing a build that is similar to Ssalarn's Jory the Smasher example, but uses a big cat instead of a wolf (big cat is similar to raptor, unless you're meaning a bird and not a dino). The Paired Opportunist + Broken Wing Gambit route is going to be the core of it. I didn't bother going with the Feint options as I felt they were more of a "win more" scenario in most cases and were largely redundant.

Panda is surprisingly awesome, trading the standard bear's grab for double STR on its bite.

The war bull is pretty entertaining, and gets trample and large size at 4th level.

The camel can spit in an opponent's face, sickening them, which isn't a bad debuff, and is otherwise pretty similar to a horse.

The giant chameleon is a pretty great AnC, with a climb speed and reaching large size at 4th level so it's suitable as a mount, plus its pull ability can be useful.

The elephant (or mastodon) is a pretty powerful animal companion with two primary natural attacks.

The hippopotamus has a massive bite attack and is otherwise pretty tough and powerful.

The monitor lizard's bite eventually gets both poison and grab, which is solid.

It's really hard to go wrong with a roc, what with the flight and multiple natural attacks.

Giant Mantis. "Lunge" attack that grants double reach; grab on that attack. So... you reach out with the Mantis and move something into an adjacent spot, which just happens to also be adjacent to (and in flank with) a nasty TWF Hunter who can now full-attack the baddy.

I had thought about mentioning the giant mantis as well, but ultimately avoided mentioning any of the vermin companions because of the extra hoops involved in them being mindless. If you are going to pick an insect/vermin companion, make sure you're caught up on the rules implications of mindless companions.

The Exchange

One of the best ways to make Vermin work is the human alternate racial ability that gives a +2 to any ability score on your companion.

Can't remember the name of the ability, its Heart of the Something I believe.

Makes a nice way to get around have a mindless companion starting at level 1.

Eye for Talent is the racial trait.

Dark Archive

Sorry for the Necro threading.. But I am looking for permanent increases in my T-Rex's bite attack for PFS and Im running into PFS blocks. No evolved companion feat, No Spirits Gift, no Improved natural attack, No impact amulet of Mighty fists. Looks like they have shut off permanent increases. I can get at temp increases i.e. Strongjaw, Primal companion. Has any one found a way for permanent increases?

Out of curiosity, how would you go about utilizing a verminous hunter to their fullest? A grapple build abusing Leech, maybe...?
