A gripe about bloodlines

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

After looking over the BloodRager bloodlines and considering the Sorcerer bloodlines, I am left with a bit of an odd recurring thought. This is an issue that has nagged me for a long time now.

Both bloodline sets have a number of melee options, but these are powerful options for only one class. For example, the draconic bloodline grants claws for both classes, but the sorcerer can't really leverage this power.

I would rather have seen the sorcerer bloodlines grant bonuses based on other aspects of their progenitor. For example, dragons are shrewd clever and masters of the arcane in their own rights. Perhaps the draconic bloodline could grant bonuses to knowledges (or even additional skill points only used for knowledges).

I know this is more than a bit late (CRB released in 2009), but seeing the BloodRager bloodlines has really driven this issue to a head for me.

Well dragonic bloodline has the advantage of having the DD prestige class to help ramp up its melee power... combined with buff spells and a dip into Paladin, a Dragonic Sorc can actually be a pretty mean Gish.

Sovereign Court

@Nipin: interesting idea.

CRB options are less cohesive than the stuff Paizo came up with independent of 3.5, more news at 11

Umm, other than the basic mechanics for their spellcasting, not a single class feature of the sorcerer from 3.5 was retained. The class features, larger hit die, and larger skill list are all Paizo.

3.5 realy didn't have any class features... other than a familiar...

Liberty's Edge

I might have to spend some time homebrewing a few variants of the core bloodlines. The premise will be an archetype (similar to wildblooded) that swaps bloodline powers, arcana, etc. for more thematic abilities. Thematic will be interpreted separately for each class, but will absolutely not include a "claws" bloodline power. I am thinking either "Sage Blood" or "Pure Blood" for the archetype name.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well since this came up I would offer up the Sorcerer's Aid Project: Sigils and Talents as an option for fixing your problems with this (it's a free pdf and is linked on the d20pfsrd site).

Also if you look over in the homebrew section you can find where I have started on the Sorcerer's Aid Project Redux: Mutations.

I could use some help on the second honestly, as I've been the only person working on it so far.

EDIT: now with links

I feel like the dragon claws is a first level ability and is used in early levels. Sorcerer has True Strike as well. A Sorcerer could use True Strike combined with the claw attacks to disarm an opponent with the proper feats not incurr an attack of opportunity. Evne if you arent being tricky, you still get to have two attacks instead of one without any major penalty. (Edit: This assumes my understanding of the rules is useful here.)

I dont even really know if its good for the Bloodrager either... but sure its' better. I used them for a style character and was just happy with the later game results.
