Advice

So in a world where powerful magic is commonplace, how does a BBEG deliver a message to the PCs without being scried-n-fried?

I thought it would be fun to have the BBEG wipe all memory of his hideout from one of his minion's minds, then send the minion to deliver a message.

Torture the minion all you want, you'll get nothing!

Well, I'm not finding any spell that would help me out here! All the memory modification spells are either dispellable or affect only a few minutes of memory.

Isn't there some kind of "rewrite someone's mind" spell out there? I could always Feeblemind a minion and then Awaken it, but that seems downright cheesy.

Anyone else come up with a rules-compliant way to have a mentally-invulnerable messenger (short of a construct)?

Why not just hire some random schmuck, or a string of randoms schmucks, to send a letter. Or a message. Heck, you can cast Magic Mouth on an object and deliver it "yourself".

Technically, it would take multiple castings to get a long monologue, but I would ignore that.

Also, I would suggest that you implement a rule I did:

Quote:
Divination magic and teleportation magic are blocked by 5 ft of earth, 1 ft of stone, 1 inch of metal, or a thin layer of lead.

By not sending one of your own minions in the first place.

You send your minion to a middleman, who passes the message to a courier, who delivers it.

Another, similar way is to use one of your "B" minions, who gets their instructions via a lieutenant in your organization and never actually gets to know where your main hideout is. They either work out of the lieutenant's outpost or are always met in a bar to get their instructions, for example.

Of course, both of those leave a trail that can be followed, but then you're into usable adventure territory rather than scry and fry.

Modify Memory

Yeah, I'm going with the "minion who's never met his master", but in Wrath of the Righteous when every minion is a demon, it's a little more hokey. And there aren't exactly a lot of street-corner schmucks to hire in the Worldwound. Go figure.

I was hoping for a nice evil oration about how he'd voluntarily given up his memories just to mess with the PCs, but looks like he's just going to be a peon who "don't know nuttin'".

@RumpinRufus -- I'm afraid that's one of those 5-minute ones I was talking about...

There is also Memory Lapse, which you could always fudge to do more than the basic spell description (or metamagic it). Both of these spells should at least give a basis to modifying it to your whim so that players might be able to track/determine it without you fudging things altogether.
