I wanted to, but they said they were looking for people who had experience handing in stuff before. I took that as meaning "no amateurs allowed."

Anyone can submit to Wayfinder as far as I know, experienced or not. I have virtually no experience myself and haven't let that stop me. Start with a good idea, follow the guidelines, polish your idea and put forward your best effort, submit...and who knows? If your article gets in, that's fun and enjoyable. If it doesn't, it's still a fun and refreshing mental exercise to see your idea through to completion.

Everyone's just repeating themselves at this point, and all saying that anyone can submit. Maybe I'm just not allowed, who knows? Here's how it went down for me. Don't remember what issue it was for. It was this year, and before July because at the time I hadn't been published yet so I had nothing to show. On FB they were talking about how they'd like the submissions to come quickly because the deadline was coming up. Curious, I PMed them about how one would submit something. I didn't see the guidelines anywhere, and was curious. I wanted to try an article out, and an artist friend was thinking of sending something in as well. The response was that while they appreciated the thought, they weren't looking for or accepting submissions by people who didn't already have experience with that kind of thing. That was it. I didn't respond, and my friend and I left it at that. Now then, if what's said is true about how just anyone can submit, no matter how amateurish or newbish, then when the next magazine comes looking for submissions, I will once again PM them and my friend and I will try again. If I'm told the exact same thing, I will leave it be, again. That's all I can do.

I guess the best way to do it is to look up the guidelines if they exist (Jeff or I.A., do you have a link?)--if they don't, ask someone who's submitted before. And just send in your submission without pm'ing them first.
Anyway, let's keep the discussion here on topic here. :)
Tomorrow, on Saturday (it's already Friday here) I'm planning to post stats on types and subtypes on my blog. I'll also compile the other statistics Jacob and I have posted here and include them in the same blog post. If time allows, I'll analyze the CRs (or maybe also the dates the monsters were submitted) further. The dates when people submitted the monsters would make an interesting graph. :D

Submission guidelines for the next issue are always found at the back of the current issue, plus there's always a thread posted here in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting forum when the call goes out for a new issue. Here's the one for issue #12.
Back on topic, I'd be interested in seeing what the average word count for the entries is, and perhaps highest/lowest word counts for entries.

Curious to see how we review the monsters? Here's an example by Jacob. He commented on a creature I statted up (though unlike the actual entries, this one's based on a rejected pitch rather than the bestiary wish list!)
More updates later!

Interesting peek behind the curtain. I found myself wondering how my entry would hold up under that kind of scrutiny.
Reading Jacob's analysis confirmed by belief that monster creation is both a science and an art.

It was a tough choice indeed. Anyway, time to send the top 5 monsters to SKR!
Jacob also revealed to Mike and me who wrote our top 5 (and top 7) monsters. I'm very pleased to see a lot of new names in the mix! :)
Can't wait to interview the top 5!
New as in names you never ever seen before anywhere? New as never before seen in Superstar, Wayfinder or published materials? New as never before seen in your blog?

New as in "never knew they existed" or "didn't know they were this good".

Alright, I posted some stats about the contest on my blog. Some old, some new information.
I'll still have to edit my comments on the top 5 entries to a more presentable form and do some other preparations, so I'll be working on that now and will post more stats only after I've got all the important stuff out of the way.

Only one dragon?
EDIT: Taking into account the lost of request for real world mythological monsters it's no wonder that there are so many magical beasts - many mythological monsters are magical animals or hybrids.
I am surprised by a small number of fey, though.
Mythology also has a lot of demons, undead, fey, plants, vermin, monstrous humanoids and every group is really well present in mythology.
Even aberrations (think arrach, Amhuluk and many inuit monsters) are very well presented in mythology.
There are a lot of magical beasts, but all other groups (except for constructs maybe) are there to.

At this point, we don't want reveal that much.
All I can say is that each of the top 5 monsters is of a different creature type. Four different alignments are represented in the top 5, i.e. two of them have the same alignment.

Hmmm, wonders how his entry was counted in the types because it could be argued it has two (ish) >.< ...
Wonders if it also counted as humanoid... >.<
Notices it shared alignment with just one other...
And was the only one of its CR...
Hey this is just like RPG Superstar Judge teasers that have you second guessing all the way to reveal - such fun ;)
Lol, and that gives away not very much at all >.<

...because it could be argued it has two...
No creature can have two types. Two subtypes is possible, and some creatures count as being other types (e.g. inevitables or androids both count as being constructs for certain effects). But an inevitable is an outsider, and an android is a humanoid (android).
A templated creature that gains a new type loses its old type, but of course, as per the contest rules, templates or templated creatures were not allowed.

Ah well, that's me out then, I just checked, my two types were definitely types - I applied the undead type to a fey type so I messed that up then. Cest la vie.

I can't wait until the reveal, in part because I want you all to be able to look the monsters over and start voting, but also because I intend to contact one of the Top 5 entrants to see about doing some collaborative work together. Of course, I can't do that until that person knows he/she is in the Top 5...

Now *I'm* curious.
I'm also really excited for the reveal. I want to see if you guys like the monsters as much as we did.
Well that depends on the monsters of course!! If the top 5 has interesting monsters with interesting abilities I will like them. But if there are kaiju and giant butterflies in there I dont know how im gonna like them :-p
