August 14th Update and Creating Tieflings

Pathfinder Society

I will probably regret asking this, but....

As of the most recent update (which I think was 8/14), the "Additional Resources" page has a line under "Blood of Fiends" reading, "To create an aasimar, you must have a Chronicle sheet that opens the race as a legal option at character creation."

Link!

However, in the Guide to Organized Play that was recently updated, it doesn't list tiefling as a race option. I'm guessing that this is a typo on the website (since there's not a whole lot on building aasimar in Blood of Fiends), but hoping that it might not be, since I have a friend I'm trying to get into PFS with who really, really wants to play a tiefling.

If you do need a race boon to play a tiefling, how would you get one of those without first playing? Don't you need to have created a character before building a Chronicle stack?

Thanks for your help!

As of the 14th, you are required to have a boon to create both aasimar and tieflings. As you guessed, it is a typo in the additional resources that will be fixed soon.

Your best bet to gain a tiefling race boon is to find someone that has a boon from 3 years ago that they're willing to give or trade away. Try looking in the boon trading thread and you might get lucky.

Finally, I believe you need the race boon to be the first chronicle in your stack for race boons.

I don't think it technically has to be the first one, but it has to be in the stack before you put your 4th scenario chronicle sheet. I'm not aware of any rule that says you can't use a level 1 rebuild to add a race boon chronicle sheet.

Its a typo. They're aware of it and will fix it after gencon. Or more likely after the after gencon hangover.

I am not sure on the Tieflings or Aasimar race boons but others do have the wording that states the race boon has to be the first chronicle in the stack.

Have your friend start out with one of the Core races, or the newly available Nagaji/Kitsune/Wayang, and work his way up to having his 2nd character being a Tiefling.

If he likes Society, he'll most likely have quite a few characters after a while.

That's how the Boon reads, but Michael Brock has clarified that it simply needs to be applied before the character plays above level 1, just as with any other aspect of 1st level retraining.

Sadly it is going to be a while before the boons for these races become available again (at least a year). You can try your luck in the boon trading thread to see if any of the really old ones are still floating around unused. Unfortunately for your friend, he was just a bit to late to the party.

Damnation. Well, we'll see how it goes...thanks for the clarification!

Yeah, my brother intends to startup and wanted to do a angel & demon duo team. But he dithered too long and we will have to find some other theme to go with.

Just get a couple humans decked out in angel feathers or demon... uh, horns or scales or something. Have them play up that they've got some kind of tiefling and aasimar background somewhere way back when, and they're TOTALLY part of that heritage too; their fiendish and angelic qualities just haven't expressed themselves yet!

Might do that!

But will probably also take it up with the bloodrager or sorcerer bloodlines.

Where do I read about the update? Seems someone quoted some grandfather stuff.

If you get a tiefling boon, can you apply it to a 7th level tiefling that was created when you didn't need the boon to play it?

Does this change basically retire all tieflings?

If the aasimar or tiefling character had experience applied to it before August 14th, then it's grandfathered in and can be played without need for a boon.

Awesome, thanks! Sorry, saw retired and panicked!

What's up with Qadira and Sczarni retiring too?

You do not need a boon on a character already has one XP on it before 8/14. They are grandfathered in to the campaign.

Edit: Haha, ninja'd.

They've merged into a single faction.

What happens to their prestige awards? (sorry, never been a part of a collapsed faction - other than shadow lodge)

I have two characters, and their faction was a central part of development, and selection.
